The Camera DX is really required if you want to complete the Figurine Side Quest and collect all the Heart Pieces. To get it, first ride the windmill on Windfall Island and jump onto the balcony above the camera shot. Crawl into the hole and fall out and you'll stumble into a secret conversation. Talk to the shop owner to iniate a quest:

Mission 1: Take a photo of the guy in red clothes just as he drops his mail into the mailbox.
Mission 2: Go to the coffee shop and roll into the wall closest to the old man. Take a picture as he shakes in fright. Mission 3: Take a picture of the lady in the orange dress just as he looks at the man in the green outfit who passes by.

After you complete all his missions, head to the Forest Haven and capture the large rainbow firefly and bring it back to the camera shop and he'll install it into your camera and you'll have the Camera DX!
