Like past Zelda titles, Spirit Tracks contains a fantastic mix of new, innovative items and old, traditional items. The items of the game can be categorized into six sections: Swords & Shields, Equipables, Upgrades, Collectables, Storyline Items, and Freight Car Items. Below is a full list of important items in Spirit Tracks.
Table of Contents
Sword & Shields
Shield
Bought at Hyrule Castle Town Shop and in all shops in New Hyrule. Allows for blocking of enemy attacks. It’s not the most sturdy shield in all of Hyrule, but for a beginner hero, it’ll have to do. Be wary of shield-gobbling Like-Likes. If you lose your shield, the game kindly warns you of your newfound defenselessness.
Equipables
Whirlwind
Link’s first real obtained item, acquired in the Forest Temple. Reminiscent of the Deku Leaf of Wind Waker, the Whirlwind is equipped with three green plates shaped like a propeller. Essentially, it’s a propeller that blows gusts in order to stun enemies, turn turbines, move keys, clear fog, hit switches, and move platforms.
To use, aim with your stylus and blow into the DS microphone.
Boomerang
The second dungeon item, acquired in the Snow Temple. It beans striking resemblance to the boomerang of Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass. The boomerang has a large variety of uses, the most innovative being its fire and ice moving ability. Used best during the Snow Temple and the during the boss battle, the Boomerang is used to freeze water, freeze fire, and melt ice. In addition to the obligatory switch-hitting and enemy-stunning, Link’s boomerang can accurately hit its targets in their weak spots. The boomerang has the ability to target multiple objects to hit them in succession, and this is often used for time-based puzzles.
To use, simply draw with your stylus a line to each target. Plan carefully, because it has a limited range.
Whip
The third dungeon item, acquired in the Ocean Temple. The Whip is a brand new item, and offers many innovative abilities. Most basic of its uses is its ability to defeat enemies the same way a sword could. Consider it a long distance sword of sorts. It has a very limited range, however. Also used as a grabbing device to snatch shields, barbs, and helmets off enemies to make them easier to conquer. It’s also used to grab flying propellers and hit switches, among other puzzles.
In addition to its sword-like properties, the Whip is used very similarly to the grappling hook. Using wooden protrusions from the wall, you can swing from platform to platform by tapping each wooden pole.
To use, simply tap your target with the stylus. When swinging across gaps, be careful to time correctly.
Bow & Arrow
The fourth dungeon item, acquired in the Fire Temple. The classic Bow & Arrow makes its return, as it does in every Zelda game, and is as useful as ever. Similarly to past games, the bow can be used to hit enemies, and hit eye switches. A new dynamic introduced in ST for the Bow & Arrow is the arrow transporter. Hit these blue things with an arrow, and they change direction, and if you shoot an arrow into them, they will transport your arrow to whichever way the transporter points. This new use is part of many puzzles throughout the game.
To use the bow, activate its item icon, aim at your desired target, and tap.
Sand Wand
The fifth dungeon item, acquired in the Sand Temple. Used in sandy areas to raise the sand and solidify it so Link can stand on it, the Sand Wand is often used to get hidden treasure on higher platforms as well as defeat gerunes and ergtoroks and to stop boulders. Use wherever you see sand to find hidden chests and passageways.
To use, activate its item icon and tap the sand to raise. Tap the sand under you to raise Link to a higher level.
Spirit Flute
The obligatory royal instrument of Spirit Tracks. Given to you by Zelda, the Spirit Flute is used to play certain magical songs that awaken statues, call down birds, reveal chests, solve puzzles, and restore hearts. In addition to the six songs you learn along your travels, you must complete the Lokomo duets with each of the Lokomo sages in order to reveal new tracks.
In possibly one of the most addictive mechanics of the game, playing the Spirit Flute is as simple as moving your stylus across the screen and blowing in the microphone.
Bombs
Nearly as classic as the bow and arrow, the Bombs are acquired when you go call down Beedle’s Air Shop and purchase your first Bomb Bag. Used to clear paths, blow apart cracked walls, defeat enemies, and hit long distance switches. Depending on your bomb bag size, you can carry 10, 20, or 30 bombs at once.
To use, activate its item icon and tap at your desired explode-able.
Yellow Potion
Potions in Spirit Tracks are sold in their bottles, since the game, along with Phantom Hourglass, does not offer a bottle collection side quest. The Yellow Potion restores all hearts, and is offered at the steep price of 200 rupees a piece. Yellow Potions are sold in the Goron Country Store and the Papuchia Shop.
Upgrades
Bomb Bag #3
After defeating Phytops of the Ocean Temple, the Take Em All On challenge will now offer a full second challenge where you must defeat the first three bosses of the game as well as many smaller enemies. Take care of this little challenge, and you’ll be rewarded with the 30 bomb bag and the biggest bomb bag of the game.
Collectibles
Rabbit Net
At Rabbitland Rescue in the Forest Realm, speak to the Rabbitland Rescue Man and he’ll gift to you a rabbit net to catch the rabbits lining the rails all around New Hyrule. To activate the rabbit-catching minigame, look around New Hyrule for a rabbit hiding behind boulders. Once you spot one, hit the boulder with a cannonball, and the countdown will begin. Catch the rabbit before time runs out.
Stamp Book
Aftering transporting Alfonzo from Castle Town to Aboda Town, go talk to Niko and he’ll give you the Stamp Book. The Stamp Book is used to collect stamps from the stamp stations scattered across New Hyrule. Collecting these stamps earns you prizes such as the Shield of Antiquity and The Second Swordsman’s Scroll.
Engineer Clothes
Link starts his quest with the ever-stylish clothes of a Royal Engineer. However, once he agrees to help Zelda escape, he wears the Recruit’s Uniform. Once you get 15 stamps in the Stamp Book, you can have the option to switch back and forth between the Recruit’s Uniform and the Engineer Clothes.
Stamp Stations
Twenty of these stations are hidden in most of the stops around New Hyrule. At each station, you will be able to stamp a memento in your Stamp Book for your old friend Niko. For more information, check out our Stamp Stations side quest page.
Heart Container
Rather than the traditional 1/4 Heart Piece of many previous games (with the note-able exception of Phantom Hourglass), Spirit Tracks keeps things even with entire Heart Containers. This means each Heart Container has more significance as a reward item. Each container will increase Link’s total life expendature by one heart.
Storyline Items
Freight Car Items
Dark Ore
This mysterious mineral is found only in Dark Ore Mine, where a Goron salesman will offer it to you. Again, this freight is only used for a single Force Gem quest. Dark Ore can be lost when you are hit during travel, and its properties will spoil if you travel in the sun too long, so move quickly.
Mega Ice
This ice is sold only in Wellspring Station by a kind Anouki. It is used for two purposes in the game – cooling the lava plumes in Goron Village as part of the main storyline, and for a single Force Gem Quest. Mega Ice will melt if you’re in transit for too long, and as always, Mega Ice can be lost when you are hit during travel.
