The Master Trials
The first pack has no new story, but it changes how you play and adds new tools.
Master Mode
Master Mode is a harder version of the whole game. Enemies are one rank above normal, so a camp that held Red Bokoblins holds Blue ones, and a new Gold rank sits at the top. Enemies also regain health if you stop attacking them, and balloon platforms carrying enemies and treasure hover over the land, held up by Sky Octoroks. It is available from the start on its own save file and does not need the base game to be finished.
- Fight aggressively or sneak: enemies recover quickly, so slow, careful fights are wasteful.
- Pop the balloons beneath platforms: Bokoblins and Moblins cannot swim, so everything falls into the water and the chest drops with them.
- Get the Sheikah set early for stealth, and open weapon slots with Korok Seeds.
- Majora’s Mask fools Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos and Lynels into leaving you alone, which works well here.
Trial of the Sword
Return to the Lost Woods with the Master Sword and place it in its pedestal. The trial starts with Link stripped of all weapons, bows, shields and armor, but your hearts and active food effects carry over. Save beforehand, because you cannot save once you enter. Eat your best meal and refill hearts, including bonus yellow hearts, before stepping in.
The trial has three sets: 12 floors of Beginning Trials, 16 Middle Trials and 23 Final Trials, 51 floors in all with six of them rest areas and the rest combat rooms. Clear every enemy in a room to open the next. You collect weapons, food and items inside each room, and everything resets when a set ends. The game saves only between sets, and dying mid-set sends you to the start of that set empty-handed.
Take out ranged enemies first, keep bombs for platforms and crowds, and use a woodcutter’s axe to break crates and barrels. Defeating all three sets permanently powers the Master Sword up so that it stays at 60 damage instead of only being charged near Calamity Ganon and its Guardians. Its base attack is 30 and its durability 40.
Hero’s Path
Open the map and choose Hero’s Path to see a line of everywhere you have walked, with a slider that replays about 200 hours of travel. It also marks the places where you died and fast traveled. It works on existing saves.
Travel Medallion
The Travel Medallion is a tool that lets you place a single return marker and warp back to it at any time. See the table below for where to get it.
The Champions’ Ballad
The second pack adds a story-linked set of trials about the four Champions, 16 shrines, a final boss and gear from other Zelda games. It also contains the memory of the Champions’ inauguration.
How to start
You must have freed all four Divine Beasts and beaten the Blight Ganons inside Vah Ruta, Vah Rudania, Vah Medoh and Vah Naboris. You do not need to beat Calamity Ganon, recover the Master Sword or find every memory.
When the last Divine Beast is free, Zelda tells you to return to the Shrine of Resurrection on the Great Plateau. Place the Sheikah Slate back on the pedestal where you first found it. The Monk Maz Koshia then begins the Divine Beast Tamer’s Trial.
Trial 1: the One-Hit Obliterator
You get the One-Hit Obliterator, a sword that defeats nearly anything in one hit but also leaves you able to be killed by a single hit; food cannot restore hearts while you hold it. Use it to clear four enemy camps in and around the Great Plateau. When each camp is cleared, a shrine appears. Bows, shields and runes still work, but Champion abilities do not.
The four shrines are Yowaka Ita, Rohta Chigah, Ruvo Korbah and Etsu Korima. Etsu Korima’s camp is high up near Mount Hylia, so bring cold-weather clothing or food.
Trial 2: the Champion songs
Finishing the Plateau trials opens four pedestals near the Divine Beasts, one per Champion. Kass sits at each, playing a verse that hints at three shrines. They can be done in any order, and each of the three shrines grants an emblem in place of a Spirit Orb. The three emblems of a song unlock a rematch with that Divine Beast’s Blight Ganon in the Illusory Realm. Return to the beast and defeat the Blight using the equipment supplied for the fight. Each victory reveals a Champion memory and upgrades that Champion’s ability to recharge faster. Complete all four songs to unlock the final trial.
| Champion | Starts near | Shrines | What they ask |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ja’Abu Ridge, near Vah Ruta | Kee Dafunia, Sato Koda, Mah Eliya | Follow a path of light, destroy Guardians, race through waterfall rings | |
| Outside Goron City | Kamia Omuna, Sharo Lun, Rinu Honika | Defeat a molten Igneo Talus, follow rings of light, survive lava | |
| Cuho Mountain, south of Rito Village | Shira Gomar, Kiah Toza, Noe Rajee | Shoot the horn of Dinraal, race down a peak through rings, hit four targets | |
| A mesa north of Suma Sahma Shrine | Keive Tala, Takama Shiri, Kihiro Moh | Defeat a Molduking, chase rings across the land, throw the orb underground |
Final trial: The Divine Trial
Return to the Shrine of Resurrection, place the Slate again, and the shrine lowers into an underground labyrinth shaped like a Divine Beast. A Guidance Stone map helps you spin rooms, ride rotating cylinders and feed an orb through lava machinery to reach more stones.
At the end Maz Koshia fights you in a changing arena. He splits into copies, drops spiked balls that you can use with Magnesis to stun him, and later fires a laser you can parry for a long opening. Beating him earns the Master Cycle Zero and a final memory of the Champions’ ceremony.
Master Cycle Zero
The Master Cycle Zero is a summonable motorcycle that is both fast and highly maneuverable. It runs on fuel: hold almost any item next to it and drop it to refuel. You summon it as a rune from the Sheikah Slate once you have it.

DLC gear and where to find it
Most costume and tool chests are found by reading a journal (the Super Rumor Mill books in stables and the bandit Misko’s notes in ruins) and then pulling a buried chest out with Magnesis. Master Trials treasure quests all begin at the same journal on a bookshelf in Outpost Ruins, east of the Great Plateau Tower. The Champions’ Ballad treasure quests begin at a journal in the flooded Deya Village Ruins.
| Item | Where the clue is | Where the chest is | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Travel Medallion | Rumor book in South Akkala Stable | Beneath Lomei Labyrinth Island in the Akkala Sea, in the Decayed Guardian room under the shrine | |
| Korok Mask | Rumor book in Woodland Stable | Buried beside a tree deep in the Lost Woods; run in a straight line from the final two torches | |
| Majora’s Mask | Journal at Outpost Ruins | Rubble outside Kolomo Garrison Ruins | |
| Midna’s Helmet | Journal at Outpost Ruins | Shallow water in the western building of Sage Temple Ruins | |
| Tingle’s set (Hood, Shirt, Tights) | Journal at Outpost Ruins | Exchange Ruins, Castle Town Prison and Mabe Village Ruins | |
| Phantom set (Helmet, Armor, Greaves) | Journal at Outpost Ruins | Coliseum Ruins, Sacred Ground Ruins and Hyrule Garrison Ruins | |
| Ancient Bridle and Saddle | Rumor book in Highland Stable | Foot of the cherry tree on Satori Mountain; behind the flower bud at Malanya Spring | |
| Royal Guard set (Cap, Uniform, Boots) | Rumor book in Riverside Stable | Inside Hyrule Castle: the Guard’s Barracks, a false wall past the Dining Hall, and the Sanctum’s second floor | |
| Ravio’s Hood | Misko’s journal in Deya Village Ruins | Under the claws of the stone dragon at the Spring of Courage | |
| Island Lobster Shirt | Misko’s journal in Deya Village Ruins | Underwater at the source of the Menoat River, by Cora Lake | |
| Zant’s Helmet | Misko’s journal in Deya Village Ruins | Swamp island in Tobio’s Hollow, south of the Dueling Peaks | |
| Phantom Ganon set (Skull, Armor, Greaves) | Misko’s journal in Deya Village Ruins | Three Faron chests: Sarjon Bridge, the highest of three waterfalls north of Lake Floria, and Ebara Forest |
What the gear does
- Korok Mask: shakes when a Korok is hiding nearby.
- Majora’s Mask: Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos and Lynels do not take you for a threat.
- Tingle’s set: raises your running speed at night.
- Phantom set: raises attack power. Phantom Ganon set: raises stealth, and skeleton monsters leave you alone until you strike first, while bone weapons hit harder.
- Royal Guard set: charged attacks use less stamina.
- Island Lobster Shirt: some heat resistance.
- Zant’s Helmet: prevents you from being frozen by ice attacks.
- Ancient Saddle: whistle the equipped horse to you from any distance where horses can be summoned; it will not work in places such as the Gerudo Desert or indoors. Ancient Bridle: two extra horse spurs.
