Majora’s Mask has 24 masks: the Deku, Goron, Zora and Fierce Deity’s Masks that change Link’s body, plus 20 ordinary masks given out by Termina’s residents. The Deku, Goron and Zora Masks come from the main story, the 20 ordinary masks come from side quests, spirits and a few dungeons, and the Fierce Deity’s Mask is the prize for giving all 20 of those to the Moon Children. Masks stay in your inventory when you play the Song of Time, so you can collect them over many cycles. The table below lists every mask, and the sections after it explain how to get each one: where to go, the day and hour when it matters, what it costs, what you need first, and what the mask does. Many masks lead to Heart Pieces, which are collected on the Heart Pieces page, and the people who hand them out are listed in the Bombers’ Notebook guide.

Transformation masks
Deku Mask
Where and when: in Clock Town, on the first morning after you play the Song of Time. After you take back the Ocarina of Time from Skull Kid on the Final Night and play the Song of Time, the Happy Mask Salesman teaches you the Song of Healing and gives you the Deku Mask. No cost, no time limit. What it does: wearing it turns you into a Deku Scrub who can hop over water, spit bubbles, spin, and launch from Deku Flowers to glide. Play the Song of Healing with it on to return to Hylian form. You need it for the Southern Swamp, the Deku Palace and most Deku Flower puzzles. See the prologue chapter and the Song of Healing.

Goron Mask
Where and when: the Goron Graveyard in the Mountain Village region, any day once the village road is open. Get the Lens of Truth first, because it is what lets you see Darmani’s ghost. Walk to Darmani’s grave and play the Song of Healing for him. The spirit becomes the Goron Mask. What it does: as a Goron you roll, punch and pound, rolling drains magic, and you are strong enough to carry Powder Kegs. The Goron Mask is also the key to Goron Village’s Powder Keg test, the Goron Race and the Don Gero’s Mask errand. The route is in the Snowhead region chapter.

Zora Mask
Where and when: on Great Bay Coast. Find Mikau’s body drifting in the sea and push it ashore, then play the Song of Healing over it. You need Epona to jump the fences along the road to the coast. What it does: the Zora Mask lets you swim fast and dive, raise an electric barrier and throw fin boomerangs. You need it for the Pirates’ Fortress, Zora Hall and the Great Bay Temple. See the Great Bay region chapter.

Fierce Deity’s Mask
Where and when: the Moon, on the Final Night, once you have collected the 20 masks that are not transformation masks (everything on this page except the Deku, Goron, Zora and Fierce Deity’s Masks), defeated the four temple bosses and learned the Oath to Order. Give the masks to the Moon Children, and play the final game with the child wearing Majora’s Mask. The Fierce Deity’s Mask is your reward. What it does: it can only be worn in boss fights, where you wield a huge sword that fires energy beams. See the final confrontation chapter, and the list of 20 masks in the table above, because the Moon Children want a set number from you.

Clock Town and Termina Field
Great Fairy’s Mask
Where and when: find the stray fairy that is in Clock Town itself. It floats above the Laundry Pool in the southwest corner during the day and in the East Clock Town plaza at night. Catch it as Hylian Link and take it to the Great Fairy’s fountain, at the north end of North Clock Town. You can do this at any hour, for free. She gives you the mask for reuniting her with the fairy. If you visit as Deku Link she instead grants magic power and the Deku bubble. What it does: in the temples, the mask pulls stray fairies toward you and makes its hair sparkle when one is in the room. See the Stray Fairy guide.

Bremen Mask
Where and when: the Laundry Pool in Clock Town on the First or Second Night. Listen to Guru-Guru as Hylian Link until he finishes his tale, then play him the Song of Healing and he hands you the mask. It costs nothing. What it does: pressing B while wearing it plays a marching tune that makes small animals follow you. You need it to get the Bunny Hood. See the Bombers’ Notebook entry.

Blast Mask
Where and when: North Clock Town on the First Night. Around midnight the thief Sakon snatches the bag of the Old Lady from the Bomb Shop. Be there as Hylian Link and hit him with your sword so that he drops it; other weapons make the bag blow up and fail the task. The Old Lady thanks you with the mask. What it does: B sets off an explosion that damages you unless your shield is raised, and it blows open cracked walls and boulders without bombs. Saving the bag also puts the Big Bomb Bag on sale at the Bomb Shop on the Second Day. See Sakon and the Old Lady.

Kamaro’s Mask
Where and when: Termina Field, any night between midnight and 6 AM. Leave North Clock Town and follow the music northwest. Kamaro dances on the mushroom-shaped rock closest to town. Climb up as Hylian Link and play the Song of Healing for him. It is free. What it does: wear the mask and press B to dance. Teaching the dance to the Rosa Sisters in West Clock Town earns a Piece of Heart. See the Rosa Sisters and Kamaro.

Circus Leader’s Mask
Where and when: the Latte Milk Bar in East Clock Town on the First or Second Night after 10 PM. What you need: Romani’s Mask to get in. Talk to Toto near the stage and take part in the sound check: play the band’s part as Hylian Link, then again as Deku, Goron and Zora, switching masks between runs. When you have finished all four, Gorman gives you the mask. What it does: it calms the Gorman Brothers who ambush Cremia’s milk cart. See the sound check.

All-Night Mask
Where and when: the Curiosity Shop in West Clock Town, from 10 PM on the Final Day. What you need: 500 rupees, so the Giant’s Wallet, which on the N64 only comes if you finish the Oceanside Spider House on the First Day. You must also have saved the Old Lady from Sakon on the First Night of the same cycle. What it does: the mask keeps you awake through Anju’s grandmother’s two long stories at the Stock Pot Inn, each of which pays a Piece of Heart. See the Heart Pieces page for the answers.
Anju and Kafei quest masks
Kafei’s Mask
Where and when: the Mayor’s Residence in East Clock Town, on the First or Second Day from 10 AM into the evening (arrive before 6 PM to be safe). Enter the room on the right, talk to Madame Aroma and agree to look for her missing son. She hands you the mask free. What it does: wear it to ask townspeople about Kafei, which starts the whole Anju and Kafei quest.

Keaton Mask
Where and when: at 1 PM on the Final Day go to Kafei’s hideout by the Laundry Pool. Kafei has already left, but the Man from the Curiosity Shop is there and gives you the Keaton Mask for free together with the Special Delivery to Mama. What it does: use the mask in the Keaton quiz. Cut the moving bushes (in North Clock Town, on the Milk Road and in Mountain Village once spring has come) and answer all of Keaton’s questions correctly to win a Piece of Heart. One wrong answer ends the quiz. See the Keaton quiz and the answer list.

Postman’s Hat
Where and when: Clock Town, from 6 PM on the Final Day. Give the Special Delivery to Mama to the Postman instead of carrying it to Madame Aroma yourself. He delivers it to the Milk Bar. Speak to him again afterwards and he gives you the hat. What it does: with it you can look inside Clock Town’s mailboxes. The first one you check holds a Piece of Heart. See the Special Delivery step.

Couple’s Mask
Where and when: the Stock Pot Inn’s Employees room, at about 4:30 AM on the Final Day. What you need: this is the end of the Anju and Kafei quest. Get Kafei’s Sun Mask back from Sakon’s hideout and make sure Anju has the Pendant of Memories before noon on the Final Day. Anju and Kafei then merge their Sun and Moon Masks and you receive the Couple’s Mask. What it does: wear it to the Mayor’s meeting in East Clock Town to end the argument and win a Piece of Heart. See the reunion.

Romani Ranch and Milk Road
Bunny Hood
Where and when: the Cucco Shack at the back of Romani Ranch, any day between 6 AM and 8 PM. What you need: the Bremen Mask. Wear it and play its tune to get all ten chicks following you, keeping the button held until the last one joins. They grow into adult cuccos and Grog gives you the Bunny Hood. On the Final Day the road is open without a Powder Keg because the boulder has been cleared, which makes that the easiest day. What it does: the hood makes you run faster and jump farther, and it keeps the Postman’s counting timer visible. See Grog and the chicks.

Romani’s Mask
Where and when: Romani Ranch, then the milk cart on the Second Day. First help Romani: shoot the balloons on the First Day and defend the ranch on the First Night against the aliens, which begins in the small hours (be at the ranch by about 2 AM). On the Second Day, return to the ranch for Cremia’s milk run, which leaves at about 6 PM. Ride with her and shoot the masked Gorman Brothers when they attack; a boulder blocks Milk Road, so the cart takes a detour. The ride ends on the road beside a stone owl statue, where Cremia tells you the delivery went well and gives you Romani’s Mask. You then return to the ranch on Epona. What it does: it gets you into the Latte Milk Bar after 10 PM and lets you drink Chateau Romani. See the milk cart.

Garo’s Mask
Where and when: the Gorman Track on the Milk Road, between 6 AM and 6 PM. What you need: Epona and 10 rupees. Pay and beat both Gorman Brothers in a horse race. What it does: the mask lets you through the Garo lookouts into Ikana Canyon, and Garo ninjas will talk to you. See the Gorman Track race.

Southern Swamp
Mask of Scents
Where and when: the Deku Shrine on the palace grounds in the Southern Swamp. What you need: beat Odolwa in Woodfall Temple, free the Deku Princess in a bottle and carry her back to the Deku Palace in the same three-day cycle. Then enter the Deku Shrine as a Deku Scrub. The Deku Butler races you through the maze, closing doors behind him, so you have to keep up. At the end he gives you the Mask of Scents. What it does: it lets you smell out mushrooms and other scents. See the Southern Swamp chapter.

Mask of Truth
Where and when: the Swamp Spider House in the Southern Swamp. Clear it by destroying all 30 Gold Skulltula spirits. Bring the Deku Mask, an empty bottle, two Magic Beans and water, and carry bombs. The cursed man you free gives you the Mask of Truth. What it does: it lets you read Gossip Stones and animals’ thoughts, which helps you win at the Doggy Racetrack. See the Swamp Spider House page.

Mountain Village
Don Gero’s Mask
Where and when: the Goron Shrine in the Mountain Village region, with the Goron Mask and the Goron Lullaby. Put the Goron Elder’s Son to sleep with the lullaby. Light the torches with a Deku Stick before they burn out so the chandelier spins, then roll off the ramp as a Goron and smash the hanging pots. One of them drops a Rock Sirloin. Carry it to the hungry Goron on a ledge in the Mountain Village near the road to Snowhead. He gives you Don Gero’s Mask. What it does: it lets you talk to frogs, which you need for the five frogs of the frog choir. See the frog choir.

Road to Ikana and Ikana Canyon
Stone Mask
Where and when: the Road to Ikana, any time. What you need: a Red Potion or Blue Potion and the Lens of Truth to see the invisible soldier Shiro. Give him the potion and he gives you the Stone Mask. What it does: most enemies will not notice you while you wear it. In the 3DS remake Shiro stands in the Pirates’ Fortress instead. See the Ikana Canyon chapter.

Captain’s Hat
Where and when: Ikana Graveyard. What you need: Epona to jump the fences on the Road to Ikana, and the Sonata of Awakening. Take the northern branch to the graveyard before the cliff leading into Ikana Canyon; Garo’s Mask is not needed for this branch. At the far end, play the Sonata of Awakening to wake Captain Keeta. He runs off along the path, so chase him down and defeat him. After speaking to his spirit, Hookshot to the reward chest and open it for the hat. In the N64 version, a Bunny Hood jump across the gap is another way to reach the chest. What it does: Stalchildren treat you as their captain and ReDeads dance when you wear it. It is needed for the Piece of Heart grave on the Second Night, and for the skull-mask order in the Oceanside Spider House. See the Ikana Canyon chapter.

Gibdo Mask
Where and when: the Music Box House in Ikana Canyon. What you need: Garo’s Mask to get into the canyon, and the Song of Storms and the Song of Healing. First play the Song of Storms for Sharp in the Spring Water Cave to lift his curse and bring the river back. Go to the Music Box House next. Play the Song of Healing for the bandaged man in the closet, Pamela’s father, to receive the Gibdo Mask. What it does: Gibdos will talk to you and ReDeads leave you alone. You need it to enter Beneath the Well. See the Ikana Canyon chapter.

Stone Tower Temple
Giant’s Mask
Where and when: Stone Tower Temple. Fight through the temple, flip it upside down with the Light Arrows, and defeat the second Eyegore. When it falls, a chest appears holding the Giant’s Mask. What it does: on the N64 you can only use the Giant form in Twinmold’s arena, where it makes the fight much easier, and it uses magic while you wear it. See the Stone Tower Temple chapter.
