Golden Bug Locations

The 24 Golden Bugs are 12 species, with a male and a female of each. Catch them across Hyrule, then carry them to Agitha in Castle Town. She pays Rupees for every bug and pair and gives you two wallets along the way. Every bug sits in the open and chimes when you are close; they glow at night, and most are found in the same area as their partner.

HD wallet capacities: the starting Wallet holds 500, the Big Wallet 1,000, the Giant Wallet 2,000 and the Colossal Wallet 9,999. You can hand her one bug at a time, so you do not need a pair together. If you light your Lantern inside her house, the bugs scramble toward you, and if you decline to show her a bug you are carrying she senses it anyway. Keep some room in your wallet when you hand bugs over, because Rupees she pays out beyond your limit are wasted.

Hunting tips

Bugs are easiest to see at night, when they glow, and each one makes a faint twinkling sound as you pass close. They drift around a small patch of ground, so look about if the bug is not exactly where the entry says. Use the Gale Boomerang or Clawshot to pull a bug that is beyond reach; both pull a Golden Bug to you. Directions use the Normal Mode layout. Hero Mode mirrors the world, so swap left and right and east and west.

Hyrule Field (Faron)

1. Male Beetle

From Faron Woods head north into Hyrule Field. The male clings to a tree south of the pond, usually the first tree you reach on the way north. Walk up to it, or hit it with the boomerang if it flutters away. Tool: Gale Boomerang or Clawshot if out of reach. Chapter: Hyrule Field and Kakariko.

2. Female Beetle

Follow the path along the north-east side of the field. The female sits on a tree in an elevated area you cannot walk to, so lock on with the Gale Boomerang and pull her down. Tool: Gale Boomerang. Chapter: Hyrule Field and Kakariko.

Kakariko Graveyard

3. Male Ant

Under the tree beside the entrance to King Zora’s tomb in the Kakariko Village graveyard. Tool: None. Chapter: Death Mountain.

4. Female Ant

Inside the abandoned house across from Ilia’s old inn, the Elde Inn, in Kakariko Village. Tool: None. Chapter: Death Mountain.

Hyrule Field (Eldin)

5. Male Grasshopper

In the Eldin part of Hyrule Field, on the rocky ground just north-east of the path that leads into Kakariko Village. Tool: Gale Boomerang. Chapter: Lanayru Province.

6. Female Grasshopper

Near the north-west corner of the same field of Hyrule Field (Eldin). She is easier to spot at night. Tool: Gale Boomerang. Chapter: Lanayru Province.

7. Male Phasmid

Inside the arch at the south end of the Bridge of Eldin. Hit it with the Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Tool: Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Chapter: Lanayru Province.

8. Female Phasmid

High up on the rock wall just west of the north end of the Bridge of Eldin. Use the Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Tool: Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Chapter: Lanayru Province.

Kakariko Gorge

9. Male Pill Bug

Just south of the bridge in the middle of Kakariko Gorge. Tool: None. Chapter: Hyrule Field and Kakariko.

10. Female Pill Bug

Among the tall grass and trees at the southern end of the north side of Kakariko Gorge, east of the bridge. Tool: None. Chapter: Hyrule Field and Kakariko.

Great Bridge of Hylia

11. Male Mantis

Just inside the north arch of the Great Bridge of Hylia. Pull it in with the Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Tool: Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Chapter: Lake Hylia side quests.

12. Female Mantis

On the rock wall inside the gigantic tree trunk south of the bridge. She is normally out of reach but may fly down if disturbed, so pull her with the boomerang or Clawshot. Tool: Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Chapter: Lake Hylia side quests.

13. Male Butterfly

In the west field of Hyrule Field, in a patch of purple flowers beside the path that runs south from Castle Town’s gate toward the amphitheater ruins. Tool: None. Chapter: Lake Hylia side quests.

14. Female Butterfly

High on a rock wall along the north-east edge of the same field. Use the Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Tool: Clawshot. Chapter: Poe Souls and Malo Mart.

15. Male Stag Beetle

16. Female Stag Beetle

17. Male Ladybug

In the field south of Castle Town, on the stone column in the west side surrounded by Guays and Deku Babas. Use the Gale Boomerang or Hero’s Bow on the guards, then take the bug. Tool: Gale Boomerang or Hero’s Bow. Chapter: Lake Hylia side quests.

18. Female Ladybug

On a tree in the planter between the first and second flights of stairs leading up toward Castle Town. She flees if you walk up, so hit her from a distance. Tool: Gale Boomerang. Chapter: Lake Hylia side quests.

Zora’s Domain

19. Male Dragonfly

In Zora’s Domain, in a patch of tall grass a short climb from the shore beside the Mother-and-Child Rocks. Tool: None. Chapter: Lake Hylia side quests.

Upper Zora’s River

20. Female Dragonfly

In Upper Zora’s River, fluttering around the floating dock outside the boat rental cabin. The Gale Boomerang is the simplest way to catch her. Tool: Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Chapter: Lake Hylia side quests.

Gerudo Desert

21. Male Dayfly

In the southern part of the Gerudo Desert, about halfway to the west end of the sand and a short walk south of the crescent-shaped rock platform with a small chest of Arrows. You can catch it on your first visit. Tool: Gale Boomerang. Chapter: Gerudo Desert.

22. Female Dayfly

About three quarters of the way across the desert, near the ruins with an Owl Statue. Three parallel trenches lie just north of them, and she clings to the wall of the middle trench. Tool: Gale Boomerang. Chapter: Gerudo Desert.

Sacred Grove

23. Male Snail

Under the ruined stairway in the Sacred Grove, in the Chamber of Stone area. You can catch it on your first visit. Tool: Gale Boomerang or Clawshot. Chapter: Master Sword.

Temple of Time (past)

24. Female Snail

Inside the Temple of Time in the past, in the entrance area below the stairs. She is only available after the Snowpeak Ruins and is the last bug you can find. Tool: Gale Boomerang. Chapter: Return to the Sacred Grove.

After the last bug

When the Giant Wallet is full, you can spend the Rupees: Charlo’s donation and the Malo Mart donation each need 1,000 Rupees and each pay a Piece of Heart.
