Embark on the Happy Mask Trading Sequence in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to unlock unique masks and rewards. Here’s your step-by-step guide.

Unlock the Happy Mask Shop

After presenting Zelda’s Letter to the guard at Kakariko Village’s Death Mountain Trail entrance, the Happy Mask Shop in Hyrule Castle Town opens.

Keaton Mask

Keaton Mask

The Keaton Mask is the first mask available from the Happy Mask Shop. Equip it and return to the guard stationed at the entrance to Death Mountain Trail in Kakariko Village. This is the same guard who opened the gate after you showed him Zelda’s Letter. He wants the mask for his son and will happily purchase it for 15 Rupees. Since the mask costs only 10 Rupees, you’ll earn a 5 Rupee profit.

Profit: +5 Rupees

Skull Mask

Skull Mask

After paying the Happy Mask Salesman for the Keaton Mask, borrow the Skull Mask. Head into the Lost Woods and take the first passage on the left from the entrance. You’ll find a Skull Kid standing on a tree stump.

Wear the Skull Mask and speak to him. He immediately recognizes Link and decides he wants the mask for himself, purchasing it for 10 Rupees. Since the mask’s value is 20 Rupees, you’ll need to cover the remaining cost when you return to the shop.

Profit/Loss: -10 Rupees

Tip: If the Skull Kid only wants to hear music, play Saria’s Song first and then speak to him again while wearing the mask.

Spooky Mask

Spooky Mask

Borrow the Spooky Mask after settling your debt for the Skull Mask. During the daytime, visit Kakariko Graveyard and find the young boy wandering among the graves.

When he sees the mask, he mistakes Link for Dampé and eagerly buys it for 30 Rupees, exactly matching its value. Unlike the previous trade, you won’t gain or lose any money.

Profit/Loss: Break Even

Bunny Hood

Bunny Hood

The Bunny Hood is the final mask in the trading sequence. Although you can borrow it immediately after selling the Spooky Mask, you cannot complete the sale until you’ve collected all three Spiritual Stones and witnessed Zelda’s escape from Hyrule Castle. At that point, the Running Man begins appearing in Hyrule Field.

During the day, he continuously runs laps around Lon Lon Ranch. At night, he stops to rest near the western side of Hyrule Field. While wearing the Bunny Hood, speak to him and he’ll become obsessed with the mask, purchasing it for an amount equal to the maximum capacity of your current wallet.

Wallet Strategy:

Child’s Wallet: 99 Rupees
Adult’s Wallet: 200 Rupees
Giant’s Wallet: 500 Rupees

For the largest payout, wait until you’ve obtained the Giant’s Wallet before turning in the Bunny Hood. The Running Man will completely fill your wallet, making this one of the easiest ways to instantly acquire hundreds of Rupees.
Profit: Up to 500 Rupees

Mask Side Quest Completion Rewards: Additional Masks

Once the Bunny Hood has been sold and you’ve reported back to the Happy Mask Shop, the trading sequence is complete. You’ll gain access to several masks that can be borrowed freely, including the Mask of Truth, Goron Mask, Zora Mask, and Gerudo Mask. The Mask of Truth is particularly useful, allowing Link to read the thoughts of Gossip Stones throughout Hyrule.

This side quest can only be completed while Link is a child, so finish it before spending too much time in the adult era.
