You learn five songs on the Spirit Flute: Awakening, Healing, Discovery, Light and Birds. Each is picked up in a different realm and each solves a different kind of problem, from waking statues to calling birds you can swing from. Separately from those, you play one duet with each of the five Lokomo sages in their sanctuaries, and every duet reopens the rails to a temple. A sixth duet-style tune with Zelda comes at the very end.

Spirit Flute

How the Spirit Flute works

Zelda hands you the Spirit Flute during the opening chapter, Aboda Village and Hyrule Castle. When a song is available, a rocket-shaped Air Stone (also called a sound stone) shows you its notes. You then blow into the microphone and slide the pipes on the touch screen to play it back. Songs you know are stored on the Collection screen, so you can check them again later.

Song of Awakening

Song of Awakening

You find this song first, at an Air Stone near the Forest Sanctuary, on your way back from Gage’s chamber after the first duet. Playing it wakes anything that is asleep. In practice that means the Gossip Stones scattered around New Hyrule, which talk once they are awake and share hints about the area.

Song of Healing

Song of Healing

You learn this song at the entrance of the Forest Temple. Play it inside a dungeon and a healing spirit appears and restores all of your hearts. It works once per dungeon, so leave and re-enter to use it again.

Song of Discovery

Song of Discovery

You learn this song from an Air Stone in Anouki Village, on the path toward Honcho’s house; a Red Potion chest is revealed beside it. Whenever you suspect something is hidden in the ground, such as a buried chest, play it and the hidden object appears. You also need it to get the Song of Birds and to open several caves, so expect to play it often.

Song of Light

Song of Light

Go to the Trading Post in the southeast of the Forest Realm. Climb to the grave area, where an Air Stone stands near Linebeck’s tombstone, and copy its notes to learn the song. Then play it near a beacon, one of the floating diamond-shaped crystals. The crystal lights up and sends a beam to the spot that matters, which helps with several puzzles, including one in the Fire Sanctuary.

Song of Birds

Song of Birds

In Papuchia Village, the Wise One hints at a lonely palm tree. Play the Song of Discovery beside it and a sound stone appears; tap it to learn the song. Playing it again frees the Lokomo Carben from the flock of birds that carry him. In other places it calls a large bird with a handle underneath. Grab the handle with the Whip to be carried across gaps or up to high ledges. It also makes nearby Cuccos follow you, and a dove will land on your head.

Lokomo duets (Songs of Restoration)

Each sanctuary holds a Lokomo sage who plays a phrase that you echo on the touch screen to a steady beat. Finishing the duet makes the rails to that realm’s temple appear. They are not songs you can replay at will, and you must finish all five to progress.

Gage

Gage

Gage’s duet is your first. Reach the Forest Sanctuary, where he explains the idea and asks if you want to try. You may practice as often as you like before the real performance. Rails to the Forest Temple appear when you finish.

Steem

Steem

Steem waits in the Snow Sanctuary, reached through the tunnel behind Anouki Village. His part differs from Gage’s, so ignore it when it sounds odd and keep to your own notes. Completing the duet unlocks the way to the Snow Temple.

Carben

Carben

You deliver Carben to the Ocean Sanctuary after freeing him from the birds, then perform the duet with him. Finishing it opens the route to the Ocean Temple.

Embrose

Embrose

Embrose plays in the Fire Sanctuary, behind Goron Village. Choose practice or the real duet; completing it opens the rails to the Fire Temple.

Rael

Rael

Rael is the Lokomo of the Sand Realm. Finish the duet in the Sand Sanctuary to open the path to the Sand Temple.

Zelda

The final duet with Zelda

In the last battle against Malladus, you play one more tune alongside Zelda. It is a scripted part of the fight in the Dark Realm and Malladus chapter, so you need no extra preparation beyond finishing the other duets.
