Walkthrough

This walkthrough takes you through The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask on the Nintendo 64 chapter by chapter, covering the challenges of Termina and every collectible on the way. It suits newcomers as well as players returning to the classic. Each chapter opens with what you need and what you can win there, and ends with a list of what you can pick up, so you always know whether a region is finished. The chapters are in the order that works best for a first full clear; the list below shows where the order is fixed and where you have a choice.

All 11 chapters

What each chapter covers

Prologue: The First Three Days starts with Skull Kid’s ambush and Link’s curse, then explores Clock Town as Deku Link, meets the Bombers and wins their secret code, gets the Moon’s Tear and the first Heart Piece, faces Skull Kid at the Clock Tower on the Final Night, recovers the Ocarina of Time and learns the Song of Healing. You need nothing for it, and it ends with the Deku Mask and your first Song of Time reset.

Clock Town, Termina Field and Romani Ranch begins the 100% collection route. It covers the first night’s masks, the Bank and Adult Wallet, the Bomb Shop and Big Bomb Bag, the Bombers’ Notebook, the Termina Field grottos, Milk Road and Romani Ranch, where you win Epona’s Song and the Bunny Hood. It is the longest early chapter, with many Heart Pieces on the way, and Epona from here is what lets you leave Termina Field for the coast and the canyon.

Southern Swamp and Deku Palace rescues Koume in the Woods of Mystery for the first Red Potion bottle, tours the poisoned swamp for the Pictograph Box and its Heart Pieces, infiltrates Deku Palace to free the captive monkey and learns the Sonata of Awakening on the road to Woodfall. Bring the Deku Mask and the Song of Time. The Song of Soaring is carved on a stone tablet near the top of the Deku shortcut to Woodfall.

Woodfall Temple is the first dungeon. You collect all 15 Stray Fairies, win the Hero’s Bow, defeat the mini-bosses and battle Odolwa to clear the swamp. You leave with a Heart Container, Odolwa’s Remains, the Oath to Order and the Deku Princess in a bottle, and the Great Fairy of Power teaches you the Spin Attack.

Snowhead Region covers the Goron Village challenges: you need the Hero’s Bow from Woodfall to open the village, the Lens of Truth, the Goron Mask and the Goron Lullaby on the way, and Don Gero’s Mask for the frogs. Snowhead Temple follows with 15 Stray Fairies, three Small Keys, the Fire Arrows and the fight against Goht, and the Great Fairy there doubles your Magic Meter. Once Goht is gone, spring opens the Goron Race, the Powder Keg, Gold Dust and the sword upgrades.

Great Bay Region covers the Zora Hall quests, the Pirates’ Fortress for the Hookshot, the Marine Research Lab and its seven Zora eggs for the New Wave Bossa Nova, and the coast’s Heart Pieces; you need Epona to reach it. Great Bay Temple follows with the water pipe puzzles, the Ice Arrows, 15 Stray Fairies and Gyorg, and the Great Fairy there gives Double Defense.

Ikana Canyon covers the Road to Ikana, the graveyard, Beneath the Well and the Ancient Castle of Ikana, with the Captain’s Hat, the Song of Storms, the Gibdo and Stone Masks, the Mirror Shield and the Elegy of Emptiness. It is the chapter that asks the most of you, because it uses the masks, arrows and songs from the three earlier regions. Stone Tower Temple follows with the climb, the inverted half of the temple, the Light Arrows, the Giant’s Mask, 15 Stray Fairies and Twinmold.

Final Confrontation covers the preparations and strategies for facing Majora. Be at the Clock Tower at midnight on the Final Night with all four bosses beaten, play the Oath to Order, then clear the four Moon trials for the last four Pieces of Heart and the Fierce Deity’s Mask, and finish Majora’s three forms.

How the three-day cycle shapes the route

Time passes in Termina whether you are ready or not, and each cycle lasts three in-game days, about 54 minutes of real time. When it runs out, or when you play the Song of Time, the clock returns to dawn of the First Day. What you keep decides the route: masks, songs, the Bombers’ Notebook entries, Boss Remains, Heart Containers, upgrades, maps and Owl Statue activations stay with you, while rupees, ammunition, bottle contents, Title Deeds, keys and the Stray Fairies you collected in a temple are lost. The full list is on the three-day cycle page.

This is why the walkthrough does not follow one straight line. Temples are cleared in a single visit, so you spend a cycle collecting the fairies and beating the boss before you reset. Many town events only happen at set hours: the Blast Mask on the First Night, Cremia’s cart on the Second Day, the Keaton Mask and Postman’s Hat on the Final Day. Plan a cycle around the events you can reach, and leave out anything that needs a different day. Deposit your rupees at the Bank before you reset, since bank savings are the only money you keep.

A few events limit your choices further. The Giant’s Wallet only comes if you finish the Oceanside Spider House on the First Day, the ranch defense is a First Night event, and the Pictograph Contest closes once Woodfall Temple is cleared. The chapters mark these limits where they matter.
