Here are some notable glitches and exploits discovered in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask that players have utilized to alter gameplay or access unintended features:
Fierce Deity Link Outside of Boss Battles
The Fierce Deity Mask is typically restricted to boss rooms, but a known glitch allows players to use it elsewhere:
- Method 1: Epona and Owl Statue Glitch
- Before the third day, equip the Fierce Deity Mask to a C-button.
- While riding Epona, navigate to either Milk Road or the Southern Swamp.
- While still mounted, Z-target the owl statue and press ‘A’ to save the game.
- Upon resuming, if still on Epona, press the C-button assigned to the Fierce Deity Mask to transform.
- A beeping noise may occur; avoid pressing any buttons until the second day to prevent freezing.
- On the second day, the beeping should stop. Hold ‘Z’ and press ‘A’ to dismount, and Link should appear as Fierce Deity.
Note: This glitch is primarily confirmed in the NTSC version of the game.
- Method 2: Zora Mask Transformation
- Equip both the Zora Mask and the Fierce Deity Mask to C-buttons.
- As Link, enter waist-deep water.
- Dive and, while submerged, quickly put on the Zora Mask.
- Attempt to swim to shore; Link may perform a roll attack, disabling the ‘B’ button.
- Press the C-button assigned to the Fierce Deity Mask to transform.
Note: This method can be inconsistent and may require multiple attempts.
Invisible Great Fairy’s Sword
This visual glitch causes the Great Fairy’s Sword to become invisible:
- Equip the Great Fairy’s Sword.
- In Clock Town, attempt to place the sword into a mailbox.
- The game will notify that this action isn’t possible.
- Link’s animation will show him retrieving an invisible sword, rendering it unseen until re-equipped.
Alternate Opening Sequence
Players can access a different opening sequence with this method:
- After starting the game, quickly press ‘Start’ to access the menu.
- Navigate to the Options screen and press ‘Up,’ then ‘A.’
- As the screen appears, press ‘B’ to return to the menu select screen.
- Press ‘B’ again to return to the intro screen, which should now display an alternate sequence.
Riding Epona in Clock Town and Controlling Epona Without Link
This glitch allows Epona to be ridden within Clock Town and even controlled independently of Link:
- Mount Epona and ride into Milk Road without dismounting.
- Approach the owl statue and save the game while still on Epona.
- Reload the game; Epona may be moving into a wall.
- Without pressing ‘Start’ or dismounting, use the Ocarina to warp to Clock Town.
- Epona will now be in Clock Town.
- To control Epona without Link:
- Save at an owl statue while on Epona.
- Reload the game; Epona may move independently.
- Use the Ocarina, then put it away.
- Move the control stick to control Epona without Link.
- To reunite, press ‘A’ to remount.
Easy Rupees
Several methods exist to quickly accumulate Rupees:
- Defeating the Vulture (Takkuri)
- In Termina Field, near the path to Milk Road, a vulture enemy (Takkuri) can be found.
- Defeating it yields 200 Rupees.
- Deposit the Rupees in the bank and repeat as desired.
Caution: The Takkuri can steal items from your inventory. If this happens, play the Song of Time to revert any losses.
- Treasure Chest in East Clock Town
- In East Clock Town, atop the Milk Bar, perform rolling jumps across the signs to reach a hidden chest containing 100 Rupees.
- Inn Key Room
- With the Inn Key, access the room on the second floor of the Stock Pot Inn to find a chest with a Silver Rupee (100 Rupees).
Fixing Signs
Destroyed signs can be restored using the Song of Healing:
- After cutting a sign, play the Song of Healing (C-Left, C-Right, C-Down).
- The sign will reconstruct itself.
Advancing Time
Players can manipulate in-game time using specific songs:
- Jump Forward 12 Hours: Play the Song of Double Time: C-Right, C-Right, A, A, C-Down, C-Down.
- Slow Time: Play the Inverted Song
