Preparing for the Journey to Rito Village:
The path to Rito Village winds through the Hebra region, an area known for its biting cold. The blizzard currently engulfing Rito Village further intensifies the frigid conditions. Without adequate protection, the ‘Unbearable Cold’ will steadily drain your health, making survival challenging.
To mitigate this hazard, it is crucial to equip Link with cold-resistant armor before setting out. Early in your adventure, you likely acquired the Archaic Warm Greaves on the Great Sky Island, which offer a base level of cold protection. While these greaves provide some respite from the initial chill, venturing deeper into the Hebra region and especially tackling the Wind Temple will necessitate more robust defenses.
Upon reaching Rito Village, consider visiting the Brazen Beak armor shop. Here, you can purchase pieces of the Snowquill armor set, each providing significant cold resistance. The Snowquill Headdress costs 650 Rupees, the Snowquill Tunic is priced at 500 Rupees, and the Snowquill Trousers can be obtained for 1,000 Rupees. For the Wind Temple specifically, it is recommended to have at least two levels of cold resistance to comfortably navigate its icy interior. Invest in at least two pieces of the Snowquill set.
Alternatively, or as a supplement to armor, you can prepare meals using cold-resistant ingredients such as Spicy Peppers. These meals will grant Link temporary cold resistance, allowing you to explore the frigid environment without taking damage. Experiment with different recipes to find the most effective ways to combat the cold.
The game offers flexibility in how you approach environmental challenges, allowing you to adapt your strategy based on your current resources and progress. The initial protection from the Archaic Warm Greaves enables you to reach Rito Village, but the increasing cold within the region and the Wind Temple itself necessitates acquiring more substantial protection like the Snowquill armor.
Beyond protection from the elements, ensure you are well-stocked with essential items for the challenges ahead. Arrows will be indispensable, particularly when facing the Wind Temple’s formidable boss. Stamina-healing food will also prove invaluable, as gliding and climbing will be frequent activities during your ascent to the temple and within its structure.
Finally, consider carrying some Fire Fruit or fire arrows, as ice formations block pathways and conceal treasures within the Wind Temple. Gathering these supplies before your departure will significantly enhance your chances of success. The emphasis on arrows and stamina-restoring items suggests that aerial maneuvers and combat will be key aspects of the Wind Temple experience. The utility of Fire Fruit hints at environmental puzzles that require melting ice.
Reaching Rito Village:
Your destination, Rito Village, is nestled in the Tabantha Frontier of the Hebra province, situated in the middle of Lake Totori. It lies northwest of Lookout Landing, a central hub in your journey.
As you approach Rito Village, you will likely encounter the Lucky Clover Gazette, located down the road from Kolami Bridge in the Hyrule Ridge region. This area can be reached by following the path southeast from New Serenne Stable and Tabantha Bridge Stable. Directly in front of the Lucky Clover Gazette, you will find the main bridge leading to Rito Village, which unfortunately is broken, presenting an initial obstacle. This broken bridge serves as an early test of your problem-solving skills, requiring you to utilize the various abilities and tools at your disposal.
Several methods can be employed to cross this gap, but the most straightforward and commonly recommended approach involves using a Hylian Pine Cone. Locate the campfire near the broken bridge and toss a Hylian Pine Cone into the flames. This action will create a powerful updraft. Quickly deploy your paraglider and ride this gust of wind across the chasm to the other side. Hylian Pine Cones can be found scattered around the Lucky Clover Gazette, often near pine trees.
For those who prefer alternative methods, or if pine cones are scarce, other options exist. If you have acquired the Froggy armor pieces, which are rewarded by Traysi at the Lucky Clover Gazette, you might be able to glide over the gap and scale the cliff face. Another approach involves using the Ultrahand ability to gather nearby trees and construct a makeshift bridge long enough to span the distance. For a more aerial entry, you can fast travel to the Rospro Pass Skyview Tower, launch yourself into the air, and glide south towards Rito Village.
More unconventional methods, such as fusing a rocket to your shield for a burst of forward momentum or using Recall on a falling rock to ascend and glide down, are also possible. The multitude of solutions available highlights the game’s emphasis on player creativity and the freedom to tackle obstacles in various ways.
Once you have successfully crossed the broken bridge, simply follow the path ahead, and it will lead you directly into Rito Village.
Starting the Wind Temple Questline:
Upon your arrival in Rito Village, you will immediately notice the pervasive blizzard, blanketing the settlement in a thick layer of snow. Rito Village plays a crucial role in the overarching Regional Phenomena main quest, which tasks you with investigating and resolving the unusual weather patterns affecting Hyrule. The blizzard and the associated questline serve as the primary narrative drivers for your exploration of this region and your eventual confrontation within the Wind Temple.
To initiate the “Tulin of Rito Village” main quest, your first objective is to locate Tulin and the new village elder, Teba. Follow the quest marker displayed on your Purah Pad, which will guide you to the top levels of the village. Teba can typically be found with Tulin in one of the upper living spaces within the spiraling structure of Rito Village.
Engage in conversation with both Teba and Tulin to formally begin the quest. During this initial dialogue, Teba will likely direct you towards two bonfires situated near the village, where you will find the Hebra Trailhead Lodge and a Rito named Harth.
Proceed to the Hebra Trailhead Lodge and speak with Harth. He will provide you with valuable information about Tulin’s exceptional wind abilities and his determined efforts to reach the source of the storm raging above Rito Village.
Following your conversation with Teba and Harth, Tulin will set off on his own initiative, attempting to quell the blizzard. The narrative structure immediately presents the problem of the blizzard and introduces Tulin as the key figure in resolving it, setting the stage for your collaborative journey.
The Ascent to the Wind Temple
Having spoken with Harth, you will learn that Tulin has gone ahead to investigate the storm. Harth will then instruct both you and Tulin to work together to uncover the cause of the blizzard high in the sky, necessitating a journey across the perilous Rising Island Chain.
Begin your ascent by following the mountain path leading upwards, passing by the Rospro Pass Cave and the Hebra South Summit Cave. Keep an eye out for bonfires along the way, which can serve as landmarks and provide a brief respite from the cold. Within the caves, utilize your glider to navigate the wind currents, allowing you to traverse larger gaps and reach higher platforms. You may encounter thorny vines blocking your path; use Fire Fruit or fire-based weapons to burn them away.
As you progress, you will encounter a Rito named Gesane, who will inform you that Tulin has moved further ahead. If needed, create a fire to generate an updraft that will allow you to glide out of the cave and continue your upward climb. Employ the Ascend ability to quickly scale vertical surfaces and reach higher elevations until you finally reunite with Tulin at the summit.
After a brief conversation, Tulin will officially join your party, granting you access to his unique ability: the Power of Wind. This ability manifests as a powerful gust of wind that can significantly extend your gliding distance. Your immediate task will be to use this newfound power to reach the ruins situated opposite your current location. An Aerocuda enemy will be guarding the area, and you will need to shoot it down with an arrow to retrieve Tulin’s bow. Be prepared to face other enemies that may attack; with Tulin’s assistance, you should be able to overcome them.
With Tulin’s bow recovered, Harth will reappear, reiterating the importance of investigating the storm together and emphasizing the need to cross the Rising Island Chain. This next phase of your journey will require skillful utilization of both Link’s core abilities and Tulin’s Power of Wind to navigate the vast distances between the floating islands.
Glide across large gaps, using Tulin’s wind to gain extra distance when necessary. Employ the Ascend ability to ascend through pillars and ruins, and utilize Ultrahand to manipulate any materials you find that might aid your traversal, such as stacking boxes to reach higher platforms or constructing makeshift bridges. The path through the sky islands is often marked by smaller boats equipped with sails that act as trampolines, launching you further into the air. Continue to follow this aerial pathway, utilizing your combined skills to overcome any obstacles and enemies you encounter.
Your persistent efforts will eventually lead you to the heart of the storm, where a colossal airship awaits – the legendary Wind Temple. This majestic structure floats at an impressive altitude, a testament to the Upheaval that reshaped Hyrule’s landscape. The journey to the Wind Temple is not merely a means to an end; it is an integral part of the experience, designed to introduce Tulin’s crucial ability and demand that you effectively combine your skills with his to solve the environmental puzzles presented by the Rising Island Chain. The gradual ascent through the sky islands serves as a series of escalating challenges, preparing you for the trials that lie within the Wind Temple itself.
Wind Temple Puzzle Solutions
Having successfully navigated the Rising Island Chain, you will land on the deck of the Legendary Stormwind Ark, the Wind Temple. Upon arrival, locate and interact with the fast travel portal situated near the entrance. Activating this point will allow for quick returns to the temple’s entrance should the need arise.
As you explore the main deck, Tulin will express his suspicion that the source of the blizzard lies beneath a large, circular grate in the center of the ark. Approach the grate, and Link will attempt to lift it, only to find it firmly locked. You will then discover that five locks scattered throughout the Wind Temple must be deactivated to access what lies beneath. A map will briefly appear, highlighting the locations of these five locks across three distinct levels of the ark: 1F, B1, and B2. These locks can be tackled in any order, offering a degree of flexibility in your exploration. Each lock requires the application of Tulin’s Wind Burst ability to be deactivated.
Here are the solutions to each of the five locks:
Lock 1 (1F – Lower Area/Front of the Boat)
From the fast travel point, head north towards the front of the ark. You will encounter two rooms facing each other, each sealed by metal gates. The first lock is located within the right-hand room. Look around for loose icicles on the floor. Use the Ultrahand ability to pick up an icicle and attach it to the lever mechanism beside the gate. You can also use a dropped weapon if no icicles are readily available. With the icicle securely attached, use Ultrahand once more to pull the lever to the right, which will open the gate. Enter the room, approach the glowing lock, and instruct Tulin to use his Gust ability to activate it. In the opposite room, you can melt the ice to reveal a treasure chest containing a Soldier II Spear.
Lock 2 (B1 – Left Side/Turbine)
Exit the current room and jump off the left-hand side of the ark. Glide downwards towards a hole covered in ice. Use a fire-based attack or Fire Fruit to melt the ice and enter the opening, which will lead you to the B1 level. Alternatively, from the 1F fast travel point, you can glide down along the left-hand side of the ship to find this entrance. Proceed south along the hallway, where you will encounter and need to defeat a Construct Captain. In this area, you will notice a large gear system mounted on the wall with a missing connection. Look up and break the icicles hanging from the ceiling. Use Ultrahand to grab one of the fallen icicles and attach it to the gap in the gear system. This will complete the circuit, causing the gears to turn and the gate to open. The second lock awaits you in the adjacent room. Another method to access this lock involves a centrifuge that can be rotated. Use Ultrahand to manipulate the centrifuge, moving Link around until you see the door open. Then, use the Recall ability to rewind time, allowing you to pass through the now-open barricade.
Lock 3 (1F – South/Propeller)
From the location of Lock 2, follow the stairs upwards to find yourself in a room with laser beams crisscrossing the area. Navigate through the lasers, and you should find an open window that you can pass through to return to the B1 level. Turn right, and use Tulin’s Wind Burst to help you glide across the icy chasm. Alternatively, from the 1F fast travel point, glide down along the left-hand side. You will see a spinning wheel; use Recall on it to ride it to the other end of the hallway. Ascend the stairs and defeat the Construct you encounter. Then, use the Ascend ability on the raised platform to reach the next floor.
Here, you will see a large gear with a rod protruding from it, along with several large stone slabs marked with arrows. On one side of the hole in this area, you can find a chest containing a Captain I Reaper. Use Ultrahand to attach the stone slabs to the rod, effectively creating a makeshift propeller. Then, instruct Tulin to unleash a gust of wind on this contraption to rotate it, which will open the gate to your right.
Another way to solve this involves two sets of gears. The objective is to find sticks or other elongated objects and use Ultrahand to connect the two sets of gears. Once the gears are spinning, the barricade blocking the path to the lock will rise. Climb up the ladder beyond the gate to find the third lock. Be cautious as another Soldier Construct patrols the top of the second ladder.
Lock 4 (B2 – Exterior Bottom/Side of the Ship)
To reach the fourth lock, you will need to glide to the underside of the ark on the B2 level. You can initiate this glide either from the ship’s main deck (1F) or from the right-hand side of the B1 level where Lock 2 is located. From the 1F fast travel point, you can also glide downwards, aiming for the bottom exterior of the ship. Look for a smaller boat or ledge that can serve as a temporary platform, or simply glide directly into an opening you see. The lock itself is located out in the open on the exterior of the ship, and a Soldier Construct will be guarding it. Once you reach the vicinity of the lock, simply use Tulin’s wind power to activate and deactivate it. No complex puzzle-solving is required for this lock.
Lock 5 (1F – Tower/Highest Point)
Return to the 1F level. You can either use the stairs located near the B2 lock or utilize the Ascend ability to quickly reach the main deck. Locate the turbine situated beneath a hatch on the main deck. Use your paraglider to ride the updraft generated by this turbine, aiming for the highest point at the front of the ship, which resembles a tower. From the 1F fast travel point, look for smaller boats positioned higher up and near this “tower” section of the ark.
Climb onto these ledges and hop onto the canopy of the highest boat. This will launch Link upwards, allowing you to climb to the very top area. At the summit, you will find a set of heavy doors. Use Ultrahand to open them, revealing a drop into a shaft filled with laser beams. Alternatively, you might find a heavy hatch that needs to be lifted using Ultrahand.
Carefully dive down into the shaft, maneuvering to avoid contact with the lasers. The updraft at the bottom of the shaft can be used to readjust your gliding trajectory. Your goal is to land safely on the platform located on the north side of the map. Upon landing, enter the small nook, open the treasure chest to obtain a Soldier Blade, and finally activate the fifth and final lock.
The puzzles within the Wind Temple require a diverse range of skills, including the strategic use of Tulin’s wind ability, mastery of Link’s core abilities like Ultrahand, Ascend, Recall, and Gliding, and the ability to interact with the environment by manipulating icicles, gears, and wind currents. The ark’s multi-layered design encourages thorough exploration and vertical movement. The presence of various Construct enemies throughout the temple adds an element of combat to the puzzle-solving process, requiring you to be vigilant and prepared for confrontations.
Defeating Colgera: The Scourge of the Wind Temple
With all five locks successfully deactivated, Tulin will instruct you to return to the central area of the ship. Approach and examine the Zonai terminal located there. Interacting with the terminal will open the large hatch in the center of the deck, finally revealing the source of the persistent blizzard. This action will immediately initiate a boss battle against Colgera, the Scourge of the Wind Temple.
Prepare yourself for an aerial encounter, as the entire fight takes place high above the ground. Before engaging Colgera, ensure that you have a plentiful supply of arrows and stamina-restoring food, as both will be crucial for survival. Colgera is a massive, centipede-like creature that soars through the air. While imposing in appearance, this boss fight is generally considered to be relatively straightforward and serves as a good introduction to the temple bosses in the game.
Throughout the battle, maintain constant movement, utilizing Tulin’s wind ability to stay agile and dodge Colgera’s attacks. The primary method of damaging Colgera is by targeting its weak points with arrows. These weak points are likely to be its eyes or other glowing sections on its body. Aim carefully and fire your arrows at these vulnerable areas.
If you have fused arrows with special properties, such as Keese wings for improved tracking or elemental effects, consider using them for increased damage output. The aerial nature of this boss fight underscores the importance of your gliding skills and the need to effectively manage your resources, particularly arrows and stamina. The relatively low difficulty suggests that the encounter is designed to be more of a visually impressive spectacle and a test of your understanding of aerial movement and combat rather than an intensely challenging fight.
Post-Wind Temple Completion
Upon successfully defeating Colgera and completing the Wind Temple, you will be rewarded for your efforts. Typically, completing a major temple will grant you a Heart Container or a Stamina Vessel, which can be obtained by exchanging Light of Blessings at the Goddess Statue in Rito Village. You will also experience significant progress in the main storyline, and it is likely that you will receive a new ability or an upgrade related to Tulin’s Power of Wind, which will aid you in future adventures.
The completion of the Wind Temple will also likely unlock new main quests or side quests. Return to Rito Village or Lookout Landing and speak with the various NPCs; they have new dialogues or tasks for you. For instance, after the temple is cleared, speaking to Wortsworth, who can be found near the stone tablet that fell into the water in Rito Village, will initiate the “Messages from an Ancient Era” side adventure, sending you to Kakariko Village.
