The Wind Waker: Big Octo

Beneath the waves of the Great Sea in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, six colossal Big Octos lie in wait. Hunting down these monstrous cephalopods is a rewarding challenge, yielding valuable prizes for Link.

Finding a Big Octo

Keep a keen eye out as you sail. The presence of a Big Octo is given away by a large flock of seagulls circling persistently over a specific spot on the water. Sail directly into the center of the flock, and the massive creature will emerge from the depths to confront you.

How to Defeat a Big Octo

These giant beasts may look intimidating, but defeating them is straightforward:

  1. Equip your Boomerang: This is your primary weapon against them.
  2. Target the Eyes: Lock onto the Big Octo’s eyes.
  3. Attack: Throw the Boomerang. You can often target multiple eyes in a single throw.
  4. Persist: Each eye requires three hits from the Boomerang to be destroyed.
  5. Victory: Once all eyes are destroyed, the Big Octo is defeated.

Valuable Rewards

Defeating all six Big Octos grants significant rewards that will aid your quest:

  • 2 Pieces of Heart: Increasing your total life energy.
  • 600 Rupees: Filling your wallet.
  • 1 Magic Meter Upgrade: Permanently doubling your magic capacity.

Tracking the Tentacles: The Octo Chart

To easily track the locations of the Big Octos on your Sea Chart, you’ll want the Octo Chart (obtained from Treasure Map #26). Here’s how to get it:

  1. Sail to Six-Eye Reef (Sector D4): This reef is distinct from Two-Eye Reef where one of the Octos resides.
  2. Clear the Enemies: Defeat all the cannons and Warships patrolling the reef. This will cause a treasure chest to appear on one of the central platforms.
  3. Reach the Chest: Use your Deku Leaf to glide over to the platform where the chest appeared.
  4. Claim the Map: Open the chest to receive Treasure Map #26. Use this map with the Grappling Hook at the location indicated (often near the Northern Fairy Island, Sector A3) to pull up the chest containing the Octo Chart itself.
