Hyrule, in the era of Tears of the Kingdom, is wilder and more dangerous than ever. From the darkest Depths to the highest Sky Islands, Link needs more than just courage – he needs the right gear! Armor is absolutely essential, providing not only vital defense against enemy blows but also crucial resistances to scorching heat, freezing cold, shocking electricity, and even slippery surfaces. Many pieces belong to powerful Armor Sets, and wearing all three parts often unlocks unique abilities that can dramatically change how you explore and fight.
This guide is your complete resource for tracking down every armor set and key standalone piece in the game. We’ll cover what each piece does, the fantastic Set Bonuses you can unlock, and most importantly, where and how to acquire them. But finding the armor is only the first step…
Unlocking Armor’s True Potential: Meeting the Great Fairies
Found a set you love but wish it offered more protection? That’s where the Great Fairies come in! These mysterious and powerful benefactors are the only way to enhance your armor’s defensive capabilities and unlock those coveted Set Bonuses. They reside within enormous, closed flower buds scattered across Hyrule, initially hesitant to emerge due to the upheaval… until they hear the soothing sounds of music! Finding and awakening them requires embarking on a delightful side adventure involving investigative journalism and a troupe of dedicated musicians.
1. Start the Chain
Your journey to upgrading begins at the Lucky Clover Gazette headquarters, located just east of Rito Village at the former Rito Stable location. Speak with Penn the journalist and editor Traysi to kick off the “Potential Princess Sightings!” questline. You’ll also want to investigate the initial Great Fairy quest involving the Stable Trotters musical troupe nearby, usually starting near the Woodland Stable.
2. The Stable Trotters & Their Needs
The key to coaxing the Great Fairies from their buds lies with the traveling musical group, the Stable Trotters, led by the conductor Mastro. You’ll find their wagon, “Breezer,” often stranded near the stables housing a Great Fairy bud. Each Fairy requires a specific musical performance, and sometimes the troupe is missing a musician!
3. The Great Fairies & Awakening Them
There are four Great Fairies to awaken. You must start with Tera, but the other three can be tackled in any order you prefer afterward. The maximum upgrade level you can achieve depends on the total number of Fairies you’ve currently awakened:
- 1 Fairy Awakened: Max Upgrade Level ★☆☆☆
- 2 Fairies Awakened: Max Upgrade Level ★★☆☆ (Set Bonuses unlock at this tier!)
- 3 Fairies Awakened: Max Upgrade Level ★★★☆
- 4 Fairies Awakened: Max Upgrade Level ★★★★
Here are the individual Fairies and how to help the troupe serenade them:

Great Fairy Tera (Mandatory First Step)
Location: Near Woodland Stable (Eldin Canyon / Great Hyrule Forest border).
Unlocking: Find Mastro and the troupe nearby. Their wagon needs repairs or transport (use Ultrahand!) to reach Tera’s bud. Once there, they’ll play, and Tera will emerge, enabling Level 1 (★) upgrades.

Great Fairy Mija
Location: Near Snowfield Stable (Tabantha Tundra).
Unlocking: Find the troupe near the stable. They need their horn player, Eustus, who is often found stuck in a large pit not far away. Rescue Eustus (Ultrahand works well), reunite him with the others, ensure Breezer has a roof suitable for the cold climate, and transport the troupe to Mija’s bud for their performance. Awakening her contributes to reaching the next upgrade tier based on your total count.

Great Fairy Kaysa
Location: Near Outskirt Stable (Hyrule Field / Gerudo Canyon border).
Unlocking: Locate the troupe near the stable. This time, their flute player, Pyper, is missing. You’ll need to find him, usually near Highland Stable (far south), where he’s trying to impress someone with fireflies (bring him 10 Sunset Fireflies). Once he returns, help the troupe transport Breezer (likely needing Ultrahand construction to cross the broken bridge) to Kaysa’s bud for their concert. Awakening her contributes to reaching the next upgrade tier.

Great Fairy Cotera
Location: Near Dueling Peaks Stable (West Necluda).
Unlocking: Find the troupe near the stable, this time missing their drummer, Beetz. He can often be found near Kakariko Village or along the road, needing 3 Courser Bee Honey. Provide the honey, he’ll return, and then you must help the troupe transport Breezer across the nearby river (get creative with rafts or bridges!) to Cotera’s bud. Awakening her contributes to reaching the final upgrade tier once all four are awake.
4. The Upgrade Process
Once a Great Fairy is awake, simply approach her bud (it will now be open) and speak to her. Select the armor piece you wish to enhance. Upgrading costs Rupees and specific Materials. The required materials become rarer and more numerous for each subsequent level – expect to hunt powerful monsters for horns and guts, mine precious gems, gather specific plants and critters, and even collect Star Fragments or dragon parts for those top-tier upgrades!
Why Upgrade?
- Defense: Each upgrade level significantly boosts the armor piece’s defense rating.
- Set Bonuses: Upgrading all three pieces of a matching set to Level 2 (☆☆) unlocks its unique Set Bonus. These powerful effects range from negating fall damage (Glide Set) and resisting freezing (Snowquill Set) to boosting attack power (Barbarian Set) or allowing you to climb in the rain without slipping (Froggy Set). Aiming for these bonuses is often a major goal!
Don’t be afraid to mix and match pieces from different sets if a specific combination of effects suits your immediate needs! Check your inventory screen anytime to review armor stats, effects, and set bonus requirements.
Now that you know how to unlock armor’s full potential by serenading the Great Fairies, let’s dive into the incredible array of gear waiting for you across Hyrule!
