Main Characters / Central Figures
These characters are central to the main plot of Majora’s Mask, driving the core narrative forward.
Link
The courageous young protagonist and bearer of the Triforce of Courage. Searching for his lost friend Navi, Link is ambushed by Skull Kid and Tatl, losing both his Ocarina of Time and Epona. Trapped in the parallel world of Termina, he must reclaim his Ocarina, master powerful transformation masks, awaken the Four Giants, and race against time to prevent the moon, pulled from orbit by Majora’s Mask, from annihilating the land in just three days.
Tatl
A sharp-tongued yellow fairy and Tael’s older sister. Initially complicit in Skull Kid’s mischief, she gets separated from her brother and Skull Kid when Link pursues them. Feeling abandoned and worried for Tael, she reluctantly partners with Link, offering guidance and often sarcastic commentary throughout his quest in Termina. Her knowledge is crucial for navigating the world and understanding its inhabitants.
Tael
Tatl’s younger brother, a purple fairy who remains with the possessed Skull Kid. He seems more aware of the danger Majora’s Mask poses than his sister initially was. At the end of each three-day cycle, and at key moments, Tael attempts to offer cryptic advice to Link (“Swamp. Mountain. Ocean. Canyon…”) hinting at the locations of the Four Giants needed to stop the moon.
Skull Kid
A lonely imp-like creature from the Lost Woods who stumbled upon and stole the cursed Majora’s Mask from the Happy Mask Salesman. Empowered and corrupted by the mask’s malevolent influence, he becomes the game’s initial antagonist, playing cruel pranks across Termina (like turning Kafei into a child) and ultimately using the mask’s power to pull the moon onto a collision course with Clock Town. He was once friends with the Four Giants of Termina, Tatl, and Tael, his actions driven by feelings of abandonment.
Majora’s Mask
An ancient, sentient, and incredibly powerful artifact containing a destructive entity known simply as Majora. Used in hexing rituals by a lost tribe, its power was so great it was sealed away until stolen by the Skull Kid. The mask manipulates its wearer, feeding on negative emotions and amplifying its own dark power. It serves as the true antagonist and the final boss, transforming into three distinct forms: Majora’s Mask, Majora’s Incarnation, and Majora’s Wrath.
Happy Mask Salesman
The enigmatic and unnervingly cheerful traveling mask salesman who first appeared in Ocarina of Time. He possesses knowledge of powerful magic, including the “Song of Healing” which he teaches to Link to seal troubled spirits into masks. He tasks Link with retrieving the stolen Majora’s Mask within three days, warning of a terrible fate should he fail. His true motives and origins remain a mystery.
Transformation Masks (Link’s Forms)
These powerful masks allow Link to transform, taking on the forms and abilities of beings whose spirits are healed and sealed within. They are essential for navigating Termina and its dungeons.
Deku Link (Deku Mask)
Obtained after healing the lingering spirit of the Deku Butler’s son, this form transforms Link into a small Deku Scrub. Deku Link can perform a spinning attack, shoot damaging bubbles, skip across water for a limited number of hops, and launch himself into the air using Deku Flowers. He is vulnerable to fire but crucial for navigating the Southern Swamp and Woodfall Temple.
Goron Link (Goron Mask)
Created by healing the spirit of the fallen Goron hero, Darmani III. This powerful form allows Link to embody a large Goron. Goron Link can deliver powerful punches, perform a ground pound, curl into a ball and roll at high speeds (consuming magic when spiked), walk through lava unharmed, and press heavy switches. This form is key to traversing the Snowhead region.
Zora Link (Zora Mask)
Gained by healing the spirit of Mikau, the guitarist of the Zora band The Indigo-Go’s. As Zora Link, Link can swim with incredible speed and agility, dive underwater indefinitely, create a temporary electrical barrier (consuming magic), and fire his sharp boomerang-like fins as projectiles. Essential for exploring Great Bay and its temple.
Fierce Deity Link (Fierce Deity’s Mask)
A mask containing the power of a mysterious god, obtained within the Moon by trading all 20 non-transforming masks to the Moon Children. This transforms Link into a towering, powerful adult form wielding a unique double-helix sword capable of firing energy beams. Usable only during boss battles, it makes short work of most adversaries, including Majora’s forms. Its true nature is debated among fans – is it benevolent or potentially as dangerous as Majora?
Key NPCs & Quest Characters
Termina is bustling with unique individuals, many tied to specific locations and intricate sidequests revealed through the three-day cycle. They are grouped here by their primary region.
Clock Town NPCs
The central hub of Termina, filled with residents preparing for the Carnival of Time or worrying about the falling moon.
Anju
The kind but perpetually worried innkeeper at the Stock Pot Inn. She is engaged to Kafei but is distressed by his sudden disappearance just before their wedding, which coincides with the Carnival of Time. Helping her find Kafei initiates one of the game’s longest and most rewarding sidequests, culminating in the acquisition of the Couple’s Mask.
Kafei
Anju’s fiancé, tragically cursed into the body of a young boy by the Skull Kid. Ashamed and desperate, he hides in the back room of the Curiosity Shop, accessible via the Laundry Pool, while trying to retrieve his stolen ceremonial Sun Mask from Sakon the thief. His quest intertwines with Anju’s and requires precise timing across the three days.
Postman
An extremely dedicated postal worker obsessed with adhering to his strict delivery schedule, even as the world is about to end. He plays a key role in the Anju/Kafei quest, delivering letters between them. Link can help him deviate from his schedule on the final night, earning the Postman’s Hat.
Anju’s Grandmother
Resides at the Stock Pot Inn and spends her time reading stories to anyone who will listen (or rather, sits through them). Wearing the All-Night Mask allows Link to stay awake during her long stories, earning two Pieces of Heart. Her stories also provide some background lore about Termina and the Four Giants.
Toto
The manager of the famous Zora band, The Indigo-Go’s. He can be found in the Latte Milk Bar in East Clock Town, lamenting the band’s recent misfortunes and trying to arrange a sound check for the Carnival of Time. He requests Link play a specific song using his transformation masks, leading to the Circus Leader’s Mask (Troupe Leader’s Mask).
Gorman
The pompous leader of the Gorman Troupe, a traveling performance group booked for the Carnival of Time. He is found drowning his sorrows at the Latte Milk Bar after the carnival’s potential cancellation. He is the brother of the Gorman Brothers at the ranch. Wearing the Troupe Leader’s Mask causes him to give Link special milk.
Bombers Secret Society of Justice
A group of five Clock Town children, led by the red-bandana-wearing Jim. They patrol the town, playing hide-and-seek and guarding the entrance to the Astral Observatory via a tunnel in East Clock Town. Link must pass their test to gain membership and the code to the tunnel, receiving the Bomber’s Notebook to track schedules and quests.
Professor Shikashi
The elderly astronomer who runs the Astral Observatory, located beneath Clock Town. He allows Link to use his powerful telescope to observe the ominous moon and other celestial points, including Skull Kid atop the Clock Tower. He provides the Moon’s Tear, needed early in the game.
Honey & Darling
An extremely affectionate couple who run the Honey & Darling’s Shop mini-game center in East Clock Town. Their shop features a different game each day of the three-day cycle (Bombchu Gallery, Basket Bomb, Target Shooting). Excelling at all three games across the cycle yields a Piece of Heart.
Treasure Chest Shop Gal
The proprietor of the Treasure Chest Shop in East Clock Town. She runs a game of chance where Link pays to open a chest, hoping to win the prize (usually Rupees or a Piece of Heart) by navigating a simple maze. The prize and maze layout can change depending on which form Link enters as.
Curiosity Shop Owner
A shady but ultimately helpful character who runs the Curiosity Shop in West Clock Town, operating only from 10 PM to 6 AM. He buys and sells rare or potentially stolen goods, including the All-Night Mask and potentially items Link loses to Sakon or Takkuri. His back room serves as Kafei’s hideout, making him integral to that sidequest.
Banker
The peculiar, Stalfos-like man operating the Clock Town Bank in South Clock Town (West in the 3DS version). He allows Link to deposit Rupees for safekeeping. Crucially, thanks to a magic stamp he applies, Link’s deposited balance is remembered across time resets, preventing loss of funds when playing the Song of Time. He rewards Link for large deposits.
Southern Swamp / Woodfall NPCs
Inhabitants of the murky Southern Swamp region, including the Deku Royal Family and those affected by the poisoned waters.
Deku Butler
A loyal and dignified servant in the Deku Palace. He tragically reveals that Link’s Deku form resembles his own son, who disappeared after venturing into the passage below Clock Town. He offers Link a challenging race through a hidden passage near the end of the game, rewarding him with the Mask of Scents.
Monkey
One of several monkeys inhabiting the Southern Swamp. This particular monkey tried to warn the Deku King about the trouble in Woodfall Temple but was unjustly imprisoned. He teaches Deku Link the Sonata of Awakening to open the path to the temple. Other monkeys guide Link through the poisoned swamp and Woodfall Temple.
Koume & Kotake (Twinrova)
The elderly twin witches who run the Magic Hags’ Potion Shop and the Swamp Tourist Center’s boat cruise. Koume gets injured by Skull Kid in the Woods of Mystery and needs rescuing with a potion from Kotake. Restoring Koume allows the boat cruise to operate, granting access to the Deku Palace and Woodfall areas.
Swamp Spider House Resident
A man residing in the Southern Swamp who was cursed due to his greed and is slowly transforming into a Skulltula-like creature. He begs Link to find and defeat all 30 Gold Skulltulas hidden within his house. Completing this task lifts his curse (temporarily, until the time reset) and earns Link the Mask of Truth.
Snowhead / Goron Village NPCs
The inhabitants of the frozen Snowhead mountain region, primarily Gorons suffering under an unnatural, endless winter.
Darmani III
The revered ghost of a mighty Goron hero who tragically perished attempting to reach Snowhead Temple and stop the source of the blizzard plaguing his home. Link finds his spirit mourning his failure. Playing the Song of Healing allows Darmani’s spirit to rest and grants Link the Goron Mask, embodying his strength and abilities.
Goron Elder’s Son
The infant son of the Goron Elder, found wailing incessantly inside the Goron Shrine due to his father’s absence and the cold. His cries prevent the other Gorons from resting. Playing the complete Goron Lullaby (learned from the Elder and completed by Goron Link) puts him to sleep and inspires the other Gorons.
Biggoron
An enormous Goron found sleeping (or hibernating?) near the summit of Snowhead Mountain, directly in the path to Snowhead Temple. His powerful snores create gale-force winds that block passage. Playing the Goron Lullaby puts him into a deeper sleep, silencing the winds. He also plays a role in Powder Keg certification for Goron Link.
Medigoron
A large Goron merchant found inside the Goron Shrine. After Link (as Goron Link) passes a test administered by the Biggoron near the Goron Racetrack, Medigoron will certify him to handle powerful Powder Kegs and sell them to him. Powder Kegs are needed to destroy large boulders blocking paths.
Great Bay / Zora Cape NPCs
Characters found along the coastline and waters of Great Bay, including the Zora band members and those affected by the murky ocean conditions.
Mikau
The passionate lead guitarist of the popular Zora band, The Indigo-Go’s. Link finds him mortally wounded floating near the Great Bay coast after a failed attempt to retrieve Lulu’s stolen eggs from the Gerudo Pirates. After hearing his final song and playing the Song of Healing, Link obtains the Zora Mask, allowing Mikau’s spirit to pass on.
Lulu
The lead singer of The Indigo-Go’s and a descendant of the Zora sages. Distraught over the theft of her precious Zora Eggs by the Gerudo Pirates, she has lost her voice and secluded herself at Zora Hall. Retrieving all seven eggs and hatching them allows the newborn Zoras to teach Link the “New Wave Bossa Nova,” which restores Lulu’s voice and opens the path to Great Bay Temple.
Evan
The Zora pianist and leader of The Indigo-Go’s. He can be found practicing in his room at Zora Hall. He is protective of Lulu and initially dismissive of Link (as Zora Link). Playing a specific guitar riff (learned from Japas) alongside him on the Zora Guitar results in him giving Link a Piece of Heart.
Zora Eggs
Lulu’s seven precious eggs, containing her offspring. Four are stolen and held within the Gerudo Fortress, while three are found in Pinnacle Rock guarded by Deep Pythons. Link must recover all seven eggs using empty bottles and bring them to the Marine Research Lab tank. Once hatched, the tadpoles arrange themselves into musical notes, teaching Zora Link the “New Wave Bossa Nova.”
Fisherman
An old fisherman living in a hut on the Great Bay Coast. He provides information about the Gerudo Pirates’ fortress and the murky waters of Pinnacle Rock. He is also looking for a photo of a Gerudo Pirate. His main sidequest involves returning a small seahorse to Pinnacle Rock, which then guides Link through the dangerous waters and rewards him with a Piece of Heart.
Oceanside Spider House Resident
Similar to the Swamp Spider House resident, this man owns the cursed Oceanside Spider House on Great Bay Coast, accessible only on the First Day after obtaining the Hookshot. He is also afflicted by a Skulltula curse. Defeating the 30 Gold Skulltulas within his house before the end of the First Day lifts his curse and rewards Link with the Giant Wallet.
Ikana Canyon / Stone Tower NPCs
The haunted realm of Ikana Canyon, populated by the lingering spirits of a fallen kingdom, Garo ninjas, and cursed individuals.
Pamela
A brave young girl living alone in a large, music-box-shaped house in Ikana Canyon. She fiercely protects her father, who has been partially transformed by the Gibdo curse prevalent in the region. She is initially hostile towards Link but eventually seeks his help to heal her father using the Song of Healing.
Pamela’s Father
A scientist who came to Ikana Canyon to study Gibdos and the paranormal, possibly related to the Composer Brothers. He succumbed to the Gibdo curse and is hidden away by Pamela inside a large cupboard, emerging only when Gibdos approach the house. Playing the Song of Healing cures him and grants Link the Gibdo Mask, allowing safe passage among Gibdos and ReDeads.
Sharp the Composer
The ghost of one of the Composer Brothers of Ikana, found playing a cursed organ beneath the Ikana Graveyard well. He initially drains Link’s life force with his music. However, after Link learns the Song of Storms (taught by his brother Flat’s spirit in the N64 version, or found elsewhere in 3DS), playing it for Sharp breaks his curse, causing him to teach Link the Song of Storms himself (N64 only) and revealing the path into the Ancient Castle of Ikana.
Flat the Composer
The spirit of Sharp’s brother, the other Composer Brother. In the N64 version, his spirit is found sealed within the Royal Family’s tomb alongside Igos du Ikana; he teaches Link the Song of Storms to appease his cursed brother. In the 3DS version, his role in teaching the song is removed, but his spirit still appears with Igos.
Igos du Ikana
The proud, skeletal King of the defunct Ikana Kingdom. His spirit, along with his bodyguards, resides within the throne room of the Ancient Castle of Ikana. After Link defeats his bodyguards in battle and proves his strength, Igos acknowledges the futility of his kingdom’s lingering attachments and teaches Link the “Elegy of Emptiness,” a song required to solve puzzles within Stone Tower Temple.
Captain Keeta (Skull Keeta)
The giant skeletal captain of the Ikana Army, found slumbering in the Ikana Graveyard on the First Day. Link must awaken him by playing the Sonata of Awakening. Keeta then challenges Link to keep up with him as he marches around the graveyard, summoning Stalchildren obstacles. Successfully reaching the end before he crumbles rewards Link with the Captain’s Hat.
Poe Sisters (Amy, Beth, Joelle, Meg)
Four powerful Poe spirits who once served the Ikana Royal Family but now haunt various locations. Three (Amy, Beth, Joelle) must be defeated within the Spirit House mini-dungeon in Ikana Canyon to obtain a Piece of Heart. The fourth sister, Meg, serves as a mini-boss within the Stone Tower Temple.
Other Significant Characters / Entities
These characters and beings play important roles in Termina but may not fit neatly into a specific location or group.
The Four Giants
Termina’s ancient and benevolent guardians, residing in temples located in the swamp, mountains, ocean, and canyon. They were once friends with the Skull Kid but were angered by his mischief after he obtained Majora’s Mask. Link must awaken them by defeating the bosses in each temple. Once awakened, they can be called upon using the “Oath to Order” to catch the falling moon.
Epona
Link’s loyal and swift horse, who was stolen along with his Ocarina at the game’s start. Link finds her at Romani Ranch and must reclaim her by learning Epona’s Song from Romani. Epona is crucial for fast travel across the vast Termina Field and is required for accessing certain areas and completing specific sidequests, like protecting Romani Ranch.
Romani
A cheerful young girl living at Romani Ranch with her older sister Cremia. She seems aware of the repeating time loop, referring to Link as “Grasshopper.” She teaches Link Epona’s Song and warns of mysterious alien invaders (“Them”) who attack the ranch on the night of the First Day to abduct cows. Helping her defend the ranch rewards Link with a bottle containing Chateau Romani milk.
Cremia
Romani’s protective older sister and the manager of Romani Ranch. She handles the ranch’s milk deliveries to Clock Town but faces obstacles from the Gorman Brothers and the blocked path on the final day. She seems concerned about Romani’s talk of “ghosts” but is unaware of the true danger. Completing her milk delivery sidequest yields Romani’s Mask (or a hug).
Gorman Brothers
A pair of unpleasant brothers who run a rival ranch next to Romani Ranch and seem related to Gorman, the Troupe Leader. They wear Garo-like masks and spend their time racing horses or obstructing the road to Clock Town on the Third Day, hindering Cremia’s milk delivery unless dealt with. They also run a horse racing mini-game.
Tingle
The eccentric, 35-year-old man clad in green who believes he is a fairy. Introduced in Majora’s Mask, Tingle floats around Termina on a red balloon, selling maps of the various regions to Link. He can be found in North Clock Town, Southern Swamp, Mountain Village, Great Bay Coast, and Ikana Canyon. Shooting down his balloon is necessary to purchase his maps. “Tingle, Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah!”
Kaepora Gaebora (Owl)
The wise and recurring owl character who provides guidance to Link, much like in Ocarina of Time. In Majora’s Mask, he primarily appears near Owl Statues, which serve as save points (N64) or warp points (both versions after learning the Song of Soaring). He teaches Link the “Song of Soaring,” allowing fast travel between activated Owl Statues.
Moon Children
Five enigmatic children found playing within the tranquil field inside the Moon, accessible just before the final confrontation with Majora. Four children wear the masks of the main temple bosses (Odolwa, Goht, Gyorg, Twinmold) and ask Link for non-transformation masks to play hide-and-seek in mini-dungeons resembling the main temples. The fifth child sits alone by a tree, wearing Majora’s Mask, and asks Link philosophical questions before initiating the final battle. Giving masks to the four yields the Fierce Deity’s Mask.
This list covers the most prominent characters in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. Exploring Termina and interacting with its inhabitants across the three-day cycle reveals the depth and tragedy woven into this unique Zelda adventure.
