Overview
The Faron Wetlands is a lush but swampy region in southeastern Hyrule, now fractured by a large rift. To reach this area, head southeast from Hyrule Castle toward Lake Hylia. There’s no straightforward path into the Wetlands – Zelda must use Echoes to traverse the terrain. For example, casting a Water Block Echo or Strandtula Echo (a spider-web platform) allows her to climb onto treetops and high ledges to enter Faron Wetlands. Upon arrival, an overview cutscene will trigger and the main quest “A Rift in the Faron Wetlands” begins.
Main Quest Walkthrough
Entering the Wetlands: As you explore the Wetlands, rainfall may suddenly begin. Rain in this region is a sign that a Drippitune is nearby – a musical slime enemy causing the downpour. Seek out and defeat the Drippitune to clear the weather and unlock the Drippitune Echo ability. (This echo will be important later for puzzle-solving.) Continue eastward, watching for Octoroks and swamp pits, until you meet a group of friendly Deku Scrubs near a large tree stump known as “The Sweet Spot.”
Scrubton & The Sweet Spot: The Deku Scrubs explain that the Sweet Spot is an exclusive club and Zelda needs a Membership Card to enter. Since you don’t have one yet, head south to Scrubton, the nearby Deku Scrub village. Speak with the Deku Scrubs munching on cotton candy; they hint that a Deku Scrub at Heart Lake (to the southwest) is a club member and might help. Make your way southwest through the marsh, battling or sneaking past enemies like Buzz Blobs (avoid hitting these electrified blobs with metal weapons) and Deku Babas lurking in the water. You can defeat enemies to learn their echoes – e.g. a Piranha Echo, Baby Gohma Echo, or Buzz Blob Echo from the creatures here– but it’s also fine to evade them for now.
Heart Lake Side Quest: At the far southwest corner, you’ll find Heart Lake, which is dramatically split in two by a glowing rift. Activate the nearby waypoint for fast travel, then talk to the forlorn Deku Scrub waiting by the lake. (He was supposed to meet someone special here, but the rift interrupted that meeting.) Approach the rift and have Tri – Zelda’s mystical companion – open a portal into the “Stilled Heart Lake” (a frozen-in-time version of the area). Enter the rift to begin a mini-dungeon where you’ll rescue Tri’s friends and resolve the disturbance.
- Stilled Heart Lake Puzzle: Inside the rift, navigate webbed corridors and defeat the enemies corrupted by the rift. Burn away giant webs using a fire-based echo like an Ignizol Echo (ignited from torch slugs). You’ll encounter a few Baby Gohmas (tiny spider-crabs) and a stronger Deku Baba Lv.2 guarding prisoners encased in webs. Use echoes creatively: for example, spawn boxes or lily pads to cross water, and use the Ignizol Echo to set webs ablaze. Free the small purple spirit-like creatures (these are Tri’s trapped friends) in each room to stabilize the area. Once you clear out the rift’s monsters and free all of Tri’s friends, Heart Lake returns to normal time.
- Reward – Membership Card: With the rift mended, the grateful Deku Scrub at Heart Lake gives Zelda his Membership Card (since his date never showed, he won’t be needing it). There’s also a treasure chest on a high ledge revealed by solving the rift’s puzzles – loop around the area to claim a Piece of Heart from the chest. Activate the waypoint here if you haven’t, then return to The Sweet Spot in northern Faron Wetlands.
Into The Sweet Spot: Back at the large stump, show the Deku Scrub bouncer your new Membership Card to gain access. The Sweet Spot turns out to be a Deku Scrub hideout built into a hollow tree. Inside, stock up on supplies from the Business Scrub shop (they sell recovery hearts and Green Potions for magic). Talk to the Scrub Chieftain, who thanks Zelda for helping the wetlands and mentions a fearsome plant monster deeper in the swamp causing trouble. As you leave, a sudden tremor occurs – the monster’s presence is felt nearby. Exit the Sweet Spot to find that a giant carnivorous plant boss ambushes Zelda, swallowing something important before retreating into the newly opened Faron Temple entrance.
Faron Temple (Dungeon)
The Faron Temple is the primary dungeon of the Wetlands, themed around overgrown ruins and flowing water. Inside, you’ll face vine-covered chambers, flooded corridors, and puzzles that require clever use of echoes. Uniquely, Faron Temple has a non-linear design, allowing you to complete its challenges in various orders. Your goal is to retrieve the Big Key that the plant monster (a Manhandla) stole, and then confront the dungeon boss deep within.
Stranded Keys Puzzle: Early on, you’ll find multiple locked doors. Explore to find small keys: one key is obtained by luring a Strandtula Echo up a wall and using it as a platform to reach a high chest, and another by solving a torch puzzle (lighting all torches in a room with your Ignizol or a Fire Wizzrobe Echo). Remember that rain can be summoned with the Drippitune Echo, which might affect certain puzzles (for example, causing lily pads to grow or raising water levels). Use the Drippitune Echo in a flooded chamber to raise water and float movable crates into positions that let you cross safely.
Manhandla Mini-Boss: Partway through the temple, Zelda is attacked by Manhandla, a giant multi-headed Deku plant. In the first encounter, Manhandla has two snapping heads. Stay mobile to dodge its lunging bites and the poisonous gas clouds it emits. Use ranged echoes or throw bombs into its open mouths when it charges. Striking a head enough times will stun the creature, letting you slash at its central core. Manhandla flees after you damage it, dropping a clue to the Big Key’s location. Continue exploring (look for a chamber where four switches must be held down at once – spawning multiple Water Block Echoes on them can solve that puzzle) until you recover the Big Key from a chest.
Confronting the Boss: With the Big Key, unlock the boss door and prepare for the final battle. Make sure you’ve collected any fairies (check pots for Fairies to bottle) or Heart Pieces in the dungeon for extra health. Switch Zelda to her Swordfighter Form (a combat-ready stance granted by an Echo of a royal guardsman) if available, or have offensive echoes at the ready.
Boss: Gohma – Spidery Guardian of the Wetlands
The dungeon’s boss is Gohma, a giant armored arachnid that clings to the walls. Gohma’s weak point is its single eye, but it’s protected by three glowing green crystals on its shell. Use an electric-based echo to your advantage: when Gohma climbs the wall, target the crystals with lightning strikes (for example, cast a Buzz Blob Echo or an Electric Keese Echo to zap the crystals). Electrifying all three crystals or hitting Gohma’s open eye will cause the monster to fall off the wall, stunning it on the ground. While it’s down, rush in and strike the eye with your sword or echoes to deal damage.
During the fight, Gohma spawns swarms of Gohma Eggs that hatch into baby spiders – defeat these quickly with spin attacks or area-effect echoes so they don’t overwhelm you. Gohma will also fire a sweeping laser beam from its eye; keep moving around the room to avoid the beam. Tip: If you’ve learned the Electric Wizzrobe Echo, it can hit multiple targets – use it to simultaneously zap Gohma’s crystals and clear smaller enemies. Continue the cycle of shocking the crystals and striking the eye until Gohma is defeated.
After the battle, claim the Heart Container and approach the altar. Farore, the goddess of courage, appears as an ethereal voice and grants Zelda Farore’s Sanction, a blessing that increases Zelda’s magic and reveals lore about the Demon King Null. You’ll also receive a new Echo (the dungeon reward) allowing Zelda to bind and swing from Peahat plants, which will help in future exploration. Tri opens a portal to exit the temple.
Echoes & Collectibles in Faron
Drippitune Echo: A songful slime’s echo that controls rain. Defeating a Drippitune in the Wetlands teaches Zelda this echo. It can cause or stop rainstorms – useful for environmental puzzles (e.g., watering plants or raising water levels).
Ignizol Echo: Gained by defeating small fire slugs or torch-like foes. This echo produces a small flame (or fire spirit) that Zelda can use to ignite torches or burn flammable webs. The Ignizol Echo is critical in clearing spider webs inside Heart Lake’s rift and Faron Temple.
Strandtula Echo: Learned from spider enemies, it creates climbable web platforms. Zelda used this to reach the Wetlands and can also spawn webs on walls in the Faron Temple to climb to otherwise unreachable ledges.
Wetland Creature Echoes: Many regional monsters grant echoes: Piranha plants, Goponga Flowers, Baby Gohmas, Hoarders (thieving critters), and Buzz Blobs each have their own echoes Zelda can learn. For example, the Buzz Blob Echo lets Zelda generate a burst of electricity (effective against water creatures), and the Goponga Flower Echo might create temporary lily pads on water. Collecting these echoes by defeating enemies will expand Zelda’s toolbox for puzzles and combat.
Heart Pieces: The Faron Wetlands hide a few Pieces of Heart to increase Zelda’s health. One is obtained in the Heart Lake cave by solving a block puzzle (accessible once the rift is cleared). Another can be found in Faron Temple by arranging moveable objects to reach a high ledge. Be on the lookout for suspicious alcoves or out-of-the-way chests during exploration – they often contain Heart Pieces or valuable rupees.
Membership Card: A key item acquired during the Heart Lake side quest. This card identifies Zelda as a member of the Deku Scrub club, allowing entry to the Sweet Spot. It’s automatically used when approaching the bouncer Deku Scrub.
Rupees and Supplies: Throughout the Wetlands, open chests and defeat enemies for Rupees (currency) and restore points. For instance, a chest in an optional alcove might hold 50 Rupees or useful materials like Rock Salt. Deku Scrubs in Scrubton also run shops where you can buy bombs, arrows, and potions – stock up if needed.
Side Quests & Optional Areas
Heart Lake Rift (Deku Scrub Date): This side area in the southwest Wetlands is technically optional, but completing it is highly recommended (and in practice necessary to get the Membership Card). By resolving the rift at Heart Lake and reuniting Tri’s friends, you not only earn the Membership Card but also help a lovelorn Deku Scrub. After the main quest, you can return here to see if the Deku Scrub’s date ever arrives – you might find a sweet reunion scene and receive a gift of 100 Rupees as thanks for your help.
The Sweet Spot Challenges: Once you have access to the Sweet Spot, check back later for optional mini-games. The Deku Scrubs set up a Target Shooting mini-game inside (using Deku Seeds as ammo). Scoring high could net you a Quiver upgrade or a Piece of Heart. There’s also gossip about a secret backroom in the club – if you use the Bind Echo on some furniture, you might uncover a hidden stash of rupees.
Hidden Grottoes: Scattered around Faron Wetlands are hidden underground grottoes. One grotto entrance is concealed beneath a suspicious cluster of flowers east of Scrubton – clearing them reveals a hole. Inside, you’ll find Keese and a chest with a Purple Rupee (50). Another grotto near the north end has an Old Statue; pushing it (with the Bind or Power Bracelets Echo) reveals a Fairy Fountain where Zelda can replenish health or bottle a fairy for later.
Combat & Exploration Tips
Wetland Terrain: The ground in Faron Wetlands is often muddy and covered in shallow water. Zelda cannot swim yet, so avoid deeper bogs (they appear darker). Use Water Block Echoes to create stepping stones across water. If it starts raining (from a Drippitune), surfaces might become slippery; consider defeating the Drippitune quickly to clear the weather. Climbable trees and ledges are everywhere – stand on a spawned Strandtula web to boost Zelda’s jump and reach tree branches that serve as bridges.
Deku Scrub Assistance: Deku Scrubs in this region are friendly and will hide when monsters are near. If you see a Scrub peeking out of a flower bud, clear the area of enemies and then speak to them. They often give helpful hints (like pointing out a weak wall that can be blown up with a Bombfish Echo) or small rewards such as Five Bombs or Green Potions.
Enemy Strategies: The Wetlands’ enemies are largely plant- or water-based, so fire and electricity are your best friends. Buzz Blobs emit electricity when struck, so use a projectile (like a thrown spear echo) or hit them with a Boomerang Echo from a distance. Deku Babas snap at you if you get close; throw a Boomerang Echo or use a Fire Wizzrobe Echo to burn them from afar, which often yields a healing heart. If you learned the Piranha Echo, you can release a biting fish that travels through water to chomp other aquatic enemies for you. Remember that each foe you defeat can become a useful ally in echo form – experiment with new echoes to see how they can counter other monsters.
Manhandla Rematch: After obtaining the Big Key, you actually encounter Manhandla a second time (in the boss chamber antechamber). Now it has four heads – two green and two purple – and is more aggressive. Use the Drippitune Echo to soften it up: the rain will momentarily stall the creature’s fireballs. Target the green heads first with your sword or echoes to stun Manhandla, then quickly switch to a bomb or Bombfish Echo to damage the tougher purple heads. This exposes its core, allowing you to finish it off. Defeating Manhandla here clears the path to Gohma.
Healing and Saving: Use the Waypoint (save point) at the start of Faron Temple to teleport out if you need to restock on supplies. You can warp to Scrubton, refill your bottles and hearts, then warp back in. It’s wise to carry at least one Red Potion (for health) and maybe a Blue Potion (for magic) before the Gohma fight. Also, equip the Mirror Shield Echo (if obtained from an earlier dungeon) to block Gohma’s laser for an easier time.
