One of the most valuable collectibles in A Link to the Past are the four Bottles scattered across Hyrule. Unlike other items that simply expand your inventory, Bottles open the door to storing potions, faeries, and even the elusive bee companions that can turn the tide in battle. They are essential for survival in both the Light World and the Dark World, and players who take the time to collect them all will have a much easier time tackling the game’s toughest challenges.
Table of Contents
Magic Bottle #1: The Kakariko Village Merchant
The first Bottle can be purchased right in Kakariko Village, the bustling hub of the Light World located in Hyrule’s northwest corner. After gathering at least 100 Rupees, search the western side of the village where you will find a merchant seated cross-legged on a small carpet. He offers you the Bottle for 100 Rupees, which is a bargain considering how useful it becomes for storing recovery items. Many players find this to be their first introduction to the Bottle system, and it’s worth prioritizing as soon as you have the Rupees to spare.

Magic Bottle #2: The Tavern’s Secret Passage
Kakariko Village hides another Bottle, this time tucked away in the southeastern tavern. The building looks like a long house from the outside, but instead of using the obvious front entrance, circle around to the back and slip through the secret rear door. Inside you’ll find a small room with a treasure chest. Opening it rewards you with the second Bottle, and unlike the first, this one doesn’t cost you a single Rupee. The hidden entrance often surprises first-time players, making this Bottle feel like a special secret within the heart of the village.

Magic Bottle #3: The Bridge Dweller
The third Bottle requires a little more exploration and the ability to swim freely. After purchasing the Zora’s Flippers from King Zora in the northeast corner of Hyrule, head back to the area east of Link’s House. Cross the bridge that spans the river and then look for a spot just to the right where you can leap into the water. Swim beneath the bridge and you’ll discover a man resting in the shade, seemingly uninterested in the world above. Speak with him and he will kindly hand over a Bottle before returning to his lazy day by the river. This Bottle always feels like a hidden reward for players who enjoy exploring off the beaten path.
Magic Bottle #4: The Chest Transport Quest
The final Bottle requires more patience and a small quest. Begin in the Dark World after tempering your sword at the Smithy’s House, located just east of the Village of Outcasts. In the Dark World, the Smithy’s House becomes a ruined shack with a mysterious locked treasure chest inside. When you approach, the chest begins to follow you as though tethered to Link. It won’t open with brute force, and you can’t jump down ledges or take shortcuts while escorting it, so you must carefully walk it across Hyrule.
Lead the chest south from the Village of Outcasts, moving toward the Dark World counterpart of Link’s House and then continuing south past the Swamp Palace. Eventually you will reach the far southern region of the Dark World. Here, use the Magic Mirror to return to the Light World. Just north of your arrival point sits a lonely man next to a sign. If you bring the chest to him and speak with him, he agrees to unlock it. Inside waits the fourth and final Bottle, completing your set.
Why Collect Them All?
Having just one Bottle is helpful, but collecting all four dramatically improves Link’s chances of survival. You can stock up on Faeries before major boss fights, carry healing or magic potions for emergencies, and even keep a Good Bee or Golden Bee to unleash in combat. Many players also enjoy the convenience of having a mix of potions ready to go, ensuring that you’re prepared for dungeons, exploration, and the most dangerous Dark World battles.
With all four Bottles in hand, Link is ready to take on the toughest challenges that A Link to the Past has to offer, making these humble containers one of the most valuable sets of items in the game.
