Total6 bottles on the Nintendo 64 (the 3DS remake adds a seventh)
Fillings you start withRed Potion, Milk, Gold Dust and Chateau Romani come already filled; the Beaver Brothers and Big Poe bottles are empty
RequirementsPowder Keg and Hero’s Bow (Milk), Goron Mask and an open Snowhead (Gold Dust), Zora Mask and Hookshot (Beavers), Captain’s Hat and Hero’s Bow (Big Poe), Romani’s Mask and Kafei’s Mask (Chateau Romani)
TimingThe Milk bottle is a First Night event, the Chateau Romani bottle needs the Final Day, and the Big Poe is on the Night of the Final Day

You can collect six bottles on the Nintendo 64. Kotake, the witch sister of the injured Koume, gives you the first, with a Red Potion in it, in the Southern Swamp. Romani gives you a Milk bottle for defending her ranch, the Goron Race pays out a bottle of Gold Dust, and the Beaver Brothers hand over an empty bottle for beating them in two races. Finally, you fill one by defeating the Big Poe in the Ikana Graveyard and receive a Chateau Romani from Madame Aroma at the Milk Bar. Pick them up as soon as you can reach them, because a full set of bottles lets you carry fairies, potions and quest water at the same time.

Southern Swamp

Red Potion from Kotake

Red Potion from Kotake

Start at the Magic Hags’ Potion Shop beside the Woods of Mystery entrance. Follow the monkey through the woods to the end and you find Koume, the younger hag, hurt and lying on the ground. Talk to her, then fetch her sister Kotake. On the First Day Kotake is at the potion shop, so walk back out of the woods and speak to her; on the Second and Final Days she is wandering inside the Woods of Mystery instead. She gives you a bottle holding a Red Potion. Carry it to Koume and hand it over. When she has recovered she lets you keep the empty bottle. Do not drink the potion on the way, or you must go back to Kotake and ask again. Koume later repays you at the Swamp Tourist Centre with a boat tour and the Pictograph Box.

Koume only needs one Red Potion, and the bottle she hands back is yours for good, so you do not need to buy another to get the empty bottle. Keep the bottle with you on later trips and fill it with a potion of your own.

Romani Ranch

Milk from Romani

Milk from Romani

Bring a Powder Keg, a Hero’s Bow and, if you can, both quiver upgrades. On the First Day, blow up the boulder that blocks Milk Road and walk into the ranch. Talk to Romani, the girl in the house, and take her balloon-shooting practice (hit 10 ghost balloons in two minutes from Epona); clearing it teaches you Epona’s Song. Then wait at the ranch for the First Night. Be there by about 2:00 AM, because at 2:30 AM the ghosts called “Them” appear and float toward the barn. Shoot every one that comes close to the barn. If a single ghost reaches it, you fail and must restart the cycle.

Romani rewards you once the night is over, so stay at the ranch until she speaks to you in the morning. Do not leave before the last ghost is gone.

Hold out until about 5:15 AM. Romani thanks you for protecting the cows and gives you a bottle of Milk. To make the defense easier, wear the Bunny Hood so you can run to the far side of the field, and skip the Inverted Song of Time, which only makes the night last longer. Fill your quiver first: you will use many arrows. The event also enters Romani into your Bombers’ Notebook, and the Cremia cart escort on the Second Day, a separate task, later earns you Romani’s Mask.

If you fail, you lose only the night: try again on the next cycle. The Milk heals you when you drink it, and you can refill the bottle from cows with Epona’s Song or buy Milk at the Milk Bar for 20 rupees.

Snowhead

Gold Dust from the Goron Race

Gold Dust from the Goron Race

Beat Snowhead Temple first so that the mountain returns to spring and the Goron Racetrack can be opened. A big boulder blocks the entrance. Carry a Powder Keg there as Goron Link and blow it up, and go in. Speak to the Goron elder at the starting line to enter, then race as Goron Link. Roll, use the spiked magic roll when you need extra speed, and cross the finish line first. The winner receives a bottle of Gold Dust. Do not spend it elsewhere: take it to the Mountain Smithy together with a Razor Sword to have the Gilded Sword forged (see Items and Upgrades).

The Goron Elder’s Son hands you the bottle at the racetrack itself, so you need no second visit. Take the Gold Dust and your Razor Sword to the Mountain Smithy in Mountain Village on the Second Day, and collect the Gilded Sword at dawn on the Final Day.

Great Bay

Empty bottle from the Beaver Brothers

Empty bottle from the Beaver Brothers

Get the Hookshot from the Pirates’ Fortress first. In Zora Cape, use it to climb the cliffs to the waterfall at the top. Wear the Zora Mask, dive and talk to the beaver. The younger brother challenges you to a swimming race through 20 rings within two minutes. Win, and his older brother appears and asks for a second race through 25 rings, with the same time limit. Beat both to receive an empty bottle. If you return later and beat the races again in a faster time, you earn a Piece of Heart instead of another bottle.

Wait until you have the Zora Mask and Hookshot before you go. The beavers are at the top of the cliffs in Zora Cape, and each race has a two-minute limit, so swim straight and use the fast swim. The bottle comes only after both races are won.

Ikana Graveyard

Empty bottle from the Big Poe

Empty bottle from the Big Poe

Come to the Ikana Graveyard on the Night of the Final Day. Wear the Captain’s Hat so the Stalchildren obey you, and ask the Stalchild beside the marked grave to move the tombstone. Drop into the hole. Talk to Dampe the gravekeeper and stay close to him while he digs. Keep going until the flames he turns up gather into a Big Poe.

Shoot the Big Poe with the Hero’s Bow and keep turning to face it. Defeat it to receive the empty bottle.

This only happens on the Night of the Final Day, so finish your other bottles first and save the graveyard for the third night.

Clock Town

Chateau Romani from Madame Aroma

Chateau Romani from Madame Aroma

This bottle is the final reward of the Anju and Kafei quest. On the Final Day, once the quest has reached that point, go to the Curiosity Shop and talk to the man there. He gives you the Special Delivery to Mama. Do not turn it in anywhere else: the Postman will also take it, but that gives you only the Postman’s Hat. Instead, go to the Milk Bar, Latte, in East Clock Town. You need Romani’s Mask to get in, which you earn from Cremia on the night of the Second Day, at the end of the milk cart escort. Madame Aroma sits in the bar from about 6:00 PM on the Final Day. Speak to her while wearing Kafei’s Mask and hand over the delivery. She thanks you and gives you a bottle of Chateau Romani.

Chateau Romani gives unlimited magic for the rest of the cycle, which is powerful for arrows and the Zora barrier. Once you own it, you can buy refills at the Milk Bar for 200 rupees.

The Milk Bar sells Milk for 20 rupees and Chateau Romani for 200 rupees, so carry a full wallet if you want a second bottle.

What to keep in your bottles

Keep a Fairy in at least one bottle at all times, since it revives you automatically when your hearts hit zero. Other useful fillings are a Red Potion for hearts, a Blue Potion for hearts and magic together, Hot Spring Water from Darmani’s grave (or the Twin Islands grotto) for the cold Snowhead tasks, Spring Water for Magic Beans, and Milk for healing, which you can refill by playing Epona’s Song to a cow. You also need empty bottles for the quest items: the Zora Eggs in the Pirates’ Fortress, the Deku Princess in Woodfall Temple, and the fish and bugs some tasks ask for. The side quest guide says which tasks need a spare.

A good order to collect the bottles is the Red Potion on the First Day, the Milk bottle on the First Night, the Gold Dust after Snowhead, the Beaver bottle after the Pirates’ Fortress and the Big Poe and Chateau Romani last. That gives you spare bottles for the quest items before you reach the dungeons that need them.

Version differences

The 3DS remake has seven bottles. It adds a bottle for the Swamp boat tour game and a Mystery Milk bottle for the Gorman Brothers errand at the Stock Pot Inn, and it replaces the Big Poe bottle in the Ikana Graveyard with a Piece of Heart. On the Nintendo 64 it is the other way round: the boat tour pays a Piece of Heart and the Big Poe pays a bottle. The full comparison is in the version differences guide.
