Welcome, heroes! Magic is a vital tool in Link’s quest through Hyrule and the Dark World. While finding Bottles to carry potions helps, reducing the cost of your powerful abilities and acquiring devastating screen-clearing spells can turn the tide against Ganon’s forces. This guide covers how to find the mysterious Mad Batter to halve your magic consumption and how to obtain the three powerful Medallions: Bombos, Ether, and Quake.
Halving Your Magic Cost: Finding the Mad Batter
Tired of your magic meter draining too quickly? There’s a hidden benefactor in Hyrule who can grant you a blessing, permanently reducing the magic cost of all your items by 50%! This makes items like the Lantern, magical Rods, and especially the Medallions much more practical to use.
Prerequisites:
- Magic Powder: Obtained after giving the Magic Mushroom (found in the Lost Woods) to the Witch at the Magic Shop.
- Hammer (Recommended) or Bombs: Needed to access the Mad Batter’s location.
- Pegasus Boots (Optional but helpful): For dashing into the pile of rocks.
Location & Acquisition:
- Travel to the Light World: Head towards the blacksmith’s shop, located east of Kakariko Village.
- Find the Well: Just south of the blacksmith’s building is a small, seemingly unremarkable well blocked by a pile of rocks/stakes.
- Uncover the Well:
- Using the Hammer: Simply smash the stake/rock blocking the well entrance.
- Using Pegasus Boots: Dash into the pile of rocks to break it open.
- Using Bombs: Carefully place a Bomb next to the rocks (less reliable than the Hammer or Boots).
- Enter the Well: Drop down into the revealed hole. You’ll land in a hidden cave.
- Find the Altar: Proceed north within the cave until you find a strange-looking altar.
- Sprinkle the Magic Powder: Stand before the altar and use your Magic Powder. The Mad Batter will appear!
- Receive the Blessing: After a short, eccentric dialogue, the Mad Batter will curse… err, bless you by upgrading your Magic Meter. Your magic meter might flash briefly, and from now on, all magic-consuming items will only use half the amount of magic they did before!
Note: While optional, getting this upgrade is highly recommended, especially before tackling the more magic-intensive dungeons of the Dark World or relying heavily on the Medallions.
The Three Powerful Medallions
Scattered across Hyrule’s Light and Dark Worlds are three ancient medallions, each imbued with immense elemental power. Using them consumes a significant chunk of your magic meter, but they unleash devastating screen-wide attacks. They are often required to open the way into specific Dark World dungeons.

Bombos Medallion (Fire/Explosion)
Effect: When used, Link holds his sword aloft, summoning fiery explosions that damage most enemies on the screen. Consumes magic.
Required for: Opening the entrance to the Ice Palace (Dark World).
Prerequisites:
- Magic Mirror: Used to access the specific location.
- Master Sword (or better)
- Book of Mudora: To read the Hylian inscription.
Location & Acquisition:
- Go to the Dark World: Travel to the area that corresponds to the Desert of Mystery in the Light World. A convenient portal is located just south of Kakariko Village (the one near the man chopping a tree).
- Find the Plateau: Head south from where the Desert Palace entrance would be. You’ll see a plateau surrounded by dark green stakes that you cannot walk past directly.
- Use the Magic Mirror: Stand within the confines of the stakes on the southern edge of this area and use the Magic Mirror. You will be warped back to the Light World, but on top of the corresponding plateau there.
- Warp Back: Immediately use the Magic Mirror again while still on the plateau. You’ll warp back to the Dark World, now standing on top of the previously inaccessible plateau.
- Read the Tablet: Walk north on the plateau to find a Hylian tablet. Read it using the Book of Mudora. Link will hold up the Master Sword, learn the Bombos spell, and receive the Medallion.

Ether Medallion (Ice/Wind)
Effect: Link raises his sword, summoning freezing winds and ice that damage and/or freeze enemies across the screen. Consumes magic.
Required for: Opening the entrance to Misery Mire (Dark World).
Prerequisites:
- Master Sword (or better)
- Book of Mudora: To read the Hylian inscription.
Location & Acquisition:
- Go to the Light World: Head towards Death Mountain.
- Reach the Bridge: Ascend Death Mountain as if going to the Tower of Hera. West of the Tower’s entrance is a broken bridge extending north over a chasm.
- Read the Tablet: Stand at the edge of the southern part of the broken bridge. You’ll see a Hylian tablet embedded in the ground. Read it using the Book of Mudora. Link will raise the Master Sword, learn the Ether spell, and receive the Medallion.

Quake Medallion (Earth)
Effect: Link slams his sword into the ground, causing an earthquake that damages enemies on screen. Notably, it can transform certain enemies (like Buzz Blobs or Geldarm) into harmless Slimes (Zol). Consumes magic.
Required for: Opening the entrance to Turtle Rock (Dark World).
Prerequisites: None, other than the ability to reach the location and pick up/throw an object.
Location & Acquisition:
- Go to the Dark World: Travel to the area north of where the Waterfall of Wishing / Zora’s Domain is in the Light World. This is near the entrance to the Swamp Palace dungeon. You’ll find a body of water with a distinct sign featuring a fish or catfish symbol.
- Find the Circle of Stones: Nearby, usually slightly northwest of the sign, you’ll see a circle made of dark stones submerged in shallow water.
- Throw Something In: Pick up a nearby object (like a light-colored skull, a signpost, or even a bush if you cut one nearby and carry it) and throw it into the center of the circle of stones.
- Receive the Medallion: A large, strange fish will emerge from the water, speak briefly, and then bestow upon you the Quake Medallion.
With halved magic costs and the power of the elements at your command, you’re much better equipped to face the challenges ahead. Good luck retrieving the Seven Maidens and defeating Ganon!
