Main Characters

Link
The courageous protagonist of the game. After a violent storm destroys his ship, Link becomes stranded on Koholint Island. Determined to find a way back home, he embarks on a quest to awaken the Wind Fish by collecting the eight Instruments of the Sirens. Throughout his journey, Link confronts various challenges, battles formidable foes, and uncovers the profound secrets of the island.

Marin
A compassionate girl from Mabe Village who discovers Link unconscious on the beach after his shipwreck. She bears a striking resemblance to Princess Zelda and possesses a beautiful singing voice, often performing the “Ballad of the Wind Fish.” Marin dreams of leaving Koholint Island to sing to audiences in the vast world beyond. Her song plays a crucial role in Link’s quest to awaken the Wind Fish.

Wind Fish
A mysterious and god-like entity residing within a massive egg atop Mt. Tamaranch. The Wind Fish’s slumber maintains the existence of Koholint Island; thus, awakening it is the key to Link’s escape. Throughout the game, the true nature of the Wind Fish and the island is gradually revealed, adding depth to Link’s adventure.
Key Villagers & Figures

Tarin
Marin’s father, a jovial and kind-hearted resident of Mabe Village. He has a penchant for mushrooms and often ventures into the Mysterious Woods to forage. Tarin’s curiosity sometimes leads to comical mishaps, such as when he is transformed into a raccoon after consuming a suspicious mushroom. Despite his bumbling nature, he provides Link with valuable information and assistance during his journey.

Madam MeowMeow
A resident of Mabe Village known for her affection towards Chain Chomps. Her favorite Chain Chomp, BowWow, is initially dognapped by Moblins. Rescuing BowWow allows Link to temporarily use the creature’s voracious appetite to clear obstacles blocking the path to Goponga Swamp and the Bottle Grotto dungeon. Madam MeowMeow also plays a role in the game’s trading sequence.

Old Man Ulrira
A reclusive and notably shy resident of Mabe Village who lives with Grandma Yahoo. Ulrira communicates primarily through the telephone network scattered across Koholint Island. Calling him from various phone booths provides Link with helpful hints and directions about where to go next or how to overcome specific obstacles, serving as an in-game guidance system.
Guiding Figures

Owl
A wise and enigmatic creature that guides Link throughout his journey on Koholint Island. The Owl provides cryptic yet insightful advice, directing Link toward the Instruments of the Sirens needed to awaken the Wind Fish. While its true identity remains ambiguous, the Owl serves as a crucial mentor figure, aiding Link in navigating the island’s mysteries.
Antagonists

Nightmares
The primary antagonists within Koholint Island’s dungeons. These beings actively work to prevent the Wind Fish from awakening, as doing so would cause their own existence (and that of the island itself) to cease. Each of the eight main dungeons houses a powerful Nightmare boss that Link must defeat to claim an Instrument of the Sirens. The final confrontation involves battling multiple Nightmare forms before the true source is revealed.
Koholint Island is filled with many other memorable characters, animals, and creatures, from the talking animals of Animal Village to the mischievous Moblins. Interacting with them through conversations and the trading sequence is essential to unraveling the island’s secrets and ultimately awakening the Wind Fish.
