Beneath the waves of the Great Sea in The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, six colossal Big Octos lie in wait. Hunting down these monstrous cephalopods is a rewarding challenge, yielding valuable prizes for Link.
Finding a Big Octo
Keep a keen eye out as you sail. The presence of a Big Octo is given away by a large flock of seagulls circling persistently over a specific spot on the water. Sail directly into the center of the flock, and the massive creature will emerge from the depths to confront you.
How to Defeat a Big Octo

These giant beasts may look intimidating, but defeating them is straightforward:
- Equip your Boomerang: This is your primary weapon against them.
- Target the Eyes: Lock onto the Big Octo’s eyes.
- Attack: Throw the Boomerang. You can often target multiple eyes in a single throw.
- Persist: Each eye requires three hits from the Boomerang to be destroyed.
- Victory: Once all eyes are destroyed, the Big Octo is defeated.
Valuable Rewards
Defeating all six Big Octos grants significant rewards that will aid your quest:
- 2 Pieces of Heart: Increasing your total life energy.
- 600 Rupees: Filling your wallet.
- 1 Magic Meter Upgrade: Permanently doubling your magic capacity.
Obtaining The Octo Chart
Once you’ve secured a good supply of Bombs and you’re feeling confident behind the wheel of the King of Red Lions, set your course for Six-Eye Reef, located one square west of Northern Triangle Island. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you spot six towering stone pillars rising inside a jagged ring of reef walls.
Sail around until you find a narrow opening in the reef’s perimeter. Slip inside—and get ready for a fight. The moment you enter, cannons lining the reef walls open fire. It’s chaos unless you stay mobile, so start circling the inner reef and use your ship’s cannon to take them out one by one. Some warships may also be patrolling the waters here—take them down too, just to be safe.
Once the final cannon falls, you’ll hear the unmistakable chime of a treasure chest appearing. Look toward the central cluster of stone pillars—there it is, perched atop one of the highest. To reach it, sail close to the inner wall of the reef until you spot a ladder. Climb to the top rim and ready your Deku Leaf. Wait for a favorable wind direction (use the Wind Waker if you need to), then glide across to the pillar and open the chest to claim Treasure Chart #26.

With the chart in hand, pull up your Sea Chart and find the location it marks—just off the coast of Northern Triangle Island. Head back east and keep your eyes on the waves. When you see a glowing ring of light on the surface, stop your boat and line it up directly above the center. Use your Grappling Hook to dredge up the treasure waiting below.
What you pull up is more than just rupees—it’s the Octo Chart, a specialized sea chart that reveals the locations of every Big Octo hiding across the Great Sea. These massive, many-eyed beasts each guard a secret, and this chart gives you the edge you’ll need to find—and defeat—them all.
