Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors crossover series, blending the lore of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom with the “1 vs. 1,000” action gameplay of Dynasty Warriors. Released as a launch-window title for the Nintendo Switch 2, the game explores the events of the ancient Imprisoning War, offering a detailed look at the conflict between King Rauru’s alliance and the Demon King Ganondorf.

Story & Timeline Placement
The Divergent Timeline
While Age of Imprisonment depicts the era of Hyrule’s founding, it does not strictly adhere to the tragic history viewed in the Dragon’s Tears memories from Tears of the Kingdom. Similar to Age of Calamity, this game features a timeline divergence caused by time travel intervention.
The story begins with Calamo, a Korok exploring the Depths, discovering a glowing white shard in a ruined Zonai temple. This shard animates a Mysterious Construct, coinciding with Princess Zelda’s arrival in the past. Unlike her fate in the main timeline (where she undergoes the process of draconification to restore the Master Sword), this version of Zelda retains her Hylian form and fights alongside the ancient sages. Her knowledge of the future allows Rauru and the alliance to mount a more effective resistance against Ganondorf, creating a new “Victorious Timeline” where the Demon King is sealed away without the total devastation of the original history.
Gameplay and Features
Like its predecessors, Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment delivers action-packed “Musou” gameplay – players control Zelda characters to take on hundreds of enemies across large battlefields. The core gameplay involves performing combo attacks, capturing outposts, and defeating giant bosses in hack-and-slash fashion. However, Age of Imprisonment also introduces new mechanics and improvements suited to the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware:
Legendary Heroes & Sages
The base game features approximately 20 playable characters. The roster is divided into main story heroes and unlockable captains representing Hyrule’s various tribes.

Zonai Devices in Combat
A core new mechanic is the integration of Zonai Devices into combo strings. Players can assign devices to their “Strong Attack” inputs, consuming a battery gauge to unleash physics-based attacks:
- Hydrant/Beam (Y-Y-Y-Y-Y-X): Pushes enemies back or deals sustained laser damage.
- Cannon (X): Crowd control blasts.
- Balloon (Y-X): Launches enemies for aerial combos.
- Rocket (Y-Y-X): High-speed forward dashes.
- Elemental Emitters (Y-Y-Y-X): Flame, Frost, or Shock throwers.
- Bomb (Y-Y-Y-Y-X): Timed explosives.
