The Master Sword sits in the Light Dragon’s head. Once you have two full stamina wheels, fly up to the dragon, land on its head and pull the sword free. The Great Deku Tree marks the dragon on your map after you finish Trail of the Master Sword, and the Dragon’s Tears memories also lead you to it. The marker moves because it tracks the dragon’s current position; many guides say you can catch it near Rist Peninsula in eastern Akkala.
What you need before you go
Pulling the sword drains stamina, so you need two full wheels. Temporary yellow stamina from food does not count. Each wheel takes five Stamina Vessels (twenty Lights of Blessing, so about 20 shrines for two wheels); get them by trading four Lights of Blessing each at a Goddess Statue, or swap hearts for stamina at the Horned Statue in the Royal Hidden Passage under Lookout Landing. A paraglider and a Skyview Tower or high sky island to launch from also help, because the dragon flies far above the ground.
How to unlock the dragon marker
Trail of the Master Sword begins after you recruit Mineru as the fifth sage; she sends you to the Great Deku Tree. Korok Forest is sealed from the surface, so enter it through the Depths, go down the Deku Tree Chasm, defeat the Gloom Spawn and Phantom Ganon at the bottom and talk to the Great Deku Tree. He starts Recovering the Hero’s Sword and puts the Light Dragon on your map. Watching the Dragon’s Tears memories that follow the Master Sword also marks it, and you can pull the sword before either quest hands it to you.
How to pull the Master Sword
Launch and glide to the Light Dragon
Open the map, find the dragon’s marker and launch from the nearest Skyview Tower or a high sky island. Glide toward the dragon and use Tulin’s gust or a Zonai flyer if you fall short. The dragon is harmless; it simply keeps flying along its long route.

Land on the dragon’s head
Aim for the head at the front of the dragon, where the sword is embedded. If you land on its back, walk up the neck and spine toward the head, using the updrafts along its body to reposition. A grab prompt appears beside the glowing hilt when you are close enough.

Hold on and pull the sword free
Grab the hilt and keep the button held while your stamina drains. With two full wheels you have enough; if you run out, you are thrown off and need to try again after refilling. Once the blade comes free, the Master Sword is yours and the Zelda’s Wish memory plays.

Master Sword power and care
The Master Sword has 30 attack power and hits harder against gloom-corrupted enemies and Ganondorf’s forces. Its durability is 40, and fusing a material to it adds that material’s attack. It does not break: when it runs out of energy it goes dormant and recharges after about ten minutes of real time, so swap to another weapon in the meantime.
When your hearts are full, swinging the sword fires a sword beam, and the beam travels farther the more Heart Containers you have. The Ancient Hero’s Aspect set bonus raises beam damage by half, and the Champion’s Leathers and Tunic of Memories let you fire the beam without full hearts. The blade also conducts electricity, so take care in thunderstorms.
Tips
If you are short on stamina, spend a few Lights of Blessing on a Stamina Vessel or trade hearts for stamina at the Horned Statue, then switch back afterwards. The Light Dragon also drops scales, claws and horns when you shoot or shear them, which are useful for fusing and for selling. If you already hold the sword when the Great Deku Tree gives you the quest, it completes at once.
