Link and Navi discover a glowing Fairy Thought symbol on a moss-covered stone wall near a bridge in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake.

Nintendo Reveals “Fairy Thoughts,” a New Navi Feature in Ocarina of Time Remake

Hidden messages scattered across Hyrule could offer helpful secrets, environmental clues, and another reason to explore every corner of the kingdom.

Nintendo has revealed another new feature coming to The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and this one gives Link’s longtime fairy companion a new role.

Known for now as “Fairy Thoughts,” these mysterious messages can be discovered throughout Hyrule, offering players an opportunity to uncover secrets with Navi’s assistance. Nintendo showcased the feature in a series of screenshots featuring Link examining a glowing symbol hidden among ancient stone ruins.

It’s a relatively small addition compared to the remake’s sweeping visual overhaul, but it could make exploring Hyrule considerably more interesting, especially for longtime players who already know the original adventure inside and out.

What Are Fairy Thoughts in Ocarina of Time?

Fairy Thoughts appear to be hidden messages that Link can discover while exploring the world. Rather than being presented as ordinary signs or conversations with NPCs, these messages are represented by faintly glowing, swirling markings found in the environment.

When Link approaches one of these markings, an interaction prompt appears, allowing him to investigate. Navi then communicates the message associated with that particular location.

Nintendo introduced the feature through its social media channels, teasing that these discoveries may contain valuable secrets and encouraging players to consult Navi when they encounter one.

The screenshots establish several details about how the system works. The markings are visible within the game world, players can interact with them directly, and Navi provides the accompanying dialogue.

What Nintendo hasn’t explained is how many Fairy Thoughts are hidden throughout Hyrule, whether they’re tracked as collectibles, or whether discovering every message provides a reward.

It’s also worth mentioning that “Fairy Thoughts” may not be the finalized English name. Reporting on Nintendo’s Japanese announcement has used several translations, including “Navi’s Thoughts” and “Fairy Thoughts.” Nintendo’s English-language social media post uses the latter wording.

Nintendo’s Screenshots Show a Hidden Message Near a Stone Bridge

Nintendo’s screenshots provide a closer look at one of these discoveries.

The first image shows a partially collapsed stone enclosure covered in moss and vegetation. A glowing, pale-blue marking appears on one of its interior walls. A stone bridge is visible in the background, suggesting that the location is somewhere within Hyrule’s outdoor areas.

In the second image, Link stands inside the enclosure with Navi floating nearby. An on-screen prompt reading “A Check” confirms that the symbol is something players can examine.

The third screenshot reveals the message itself. Navi comments on what happens when someone shakes a tree and something falls out, suggesting that the event may be more than a coincidence.

It’s a curious example, particularly because shaking or interacting with trees has long been associated with hidden rewards and secrets throughout the Zelda series.

The message appears to encourage players to pay closer attention to their surroundings and experiment with objects that might otherwise seem unimportant. If other Fairy Thoughts work similarly, they could provide subtle hints about gameplay mechanics and secrets without telling players exactly what to do.

Nintendo hasn’t confirmed whether these messages can reveal hidden treasure locations, lead players toward collectibles, or provide information that isn’t available elsewhere in the game.

For now, the tree-related message is our clearest example of the sort of guidance players can expect.

Fairy Thoughts are part of a broader effort to expand how characters communicate with Link.

Nintendo has already confirmed that the remake will feature fully voiced cutscenes and expanded character dialogue. Early hands-on impressions have also described additional comments from Navi that appear during exploration.

Those comments aren’t necessarily part of the Fairy Thoughts system. In its preview, Nintendo Life described Navi displaying short observations during ordinary gameplay, including a reaction when Link makes a particularly large jump inside the Great Deku Tree.

That suggests Nintendo is approaching Navi’s role from several directions.

In the original 1998 release, Navi was essential to the game’s design. She helped introduce players to 3D navigation, assisted with targeting enemies, and provided contextual advice during Link’s adventure.

Her persistent attempts to get Link’s attention eventually became one of the most recognizable jokes in Zelda fandom.

But Navi was never intended to exist solely as a hint system.

In Nintendo’s own Iwata Asks interview about the development of Ocarina of Time, designer Yoshiaki Koizumi explained that the idea for Navi emerged from the need to represent targeting in a three-dimensional environment. Once the team established her identity as a fairy, she developed into a companion capable of helping tell the game’s story.

The remake offers an opportunity to expand that original idea.

Rather than limiting Navi to occasional instructions and combat assistance, Nintendo can give her more opportunities to comment on the world, share information, and interact with Link.

Whether that makes her more endearing or gives longtime players another reason to complain about her remains to be seen.

Are Fairy Thoughts Replacing Gossip Stones?

There’s an interesting comparison to make with Gossip Stones, another familiar feature from the original Ocarina of Time.

These distinctive stones are scattered throughout Hyrule and can provide information when Link interacts with them using the Mask of Truth.

They occasionally share practical hints, unusual observations, or bits of trivia about the kingdom.

Fairy Thoughts appear to serve a somewhat similar purpose, at least based on Nintendo’s first example.

Both systems reward players for investigating their surroundings and paying attention to information that isn’t necessarily part of the main story.

However, Nintendo has not announced that Fairy Thoughts replace Gossip Stones, nor has it explained whether the two systems are connected.

It’s possible that both will exist independently, with Fairy Thoughts offering additional clues in locations where Gossip Stones wouldn’t naturally fit.

That would make sense for a remake expanding environmental detail and dialogue while retaining the original adventure’s structure.

For now, though, any relationship between Fairy Thoughts and Gossip Stones remains speculation.

Will Fairy Thoughts Count Toward 100% Completion?

For players who enjoy finding every Heart Piece, collecting every Gold Skulltula, and completing every side quest, Fairy Thoughts raise an obvious question.

Will there be a reward for discovering them all?

Nintendo hasn’t provided an answer.

The glowing markings certainly resemble the sort of optional discoveries that completionists will want to track down. Their placement within the environment also suggests that locating them may require careful exploration.

However, Nintendo hasn’t confirmed an in-game counter, a checklist, a collection menu, or an unlockable reward associated with these messages.

We also don’t know whether Fairy Thoughts can be revisited after players have read them or whether any are exclusive to particular stages of the adventure.

That last question is particularly relevant to Ocarina of Time, given its time-traveling structure and the differences between Hyrule’s past and future.

It will be worth investigating whether Fairy Thoughts appear in both eras, whether their messages change based on Link’s age, and whether certain discoveries can be missed.

Those details could determine whether Fairy Thoughts become another significant part of the remake’s 100% completion requirements or remain a purely optional source of information.

Another Addition to Nintendo’s Reimagining of Ocarina of Time

Fairy Thoughts are only one of several changes coming to the remake.

Nintendo has already detailed a considerably larger overhaul, including modernized movement and camera controls, symphonic orchestral music, expanded dialogue, and fully voiced cutscenes.

The game also introduces new features such as the Threads of Time progression system and a special location where players can revisit previously defeated enemies.

Nintendo’s official October 14 overview trailer announcement describes this battle-focused addition as the Hall of Fallen Heroes, where players can learn about defeated monsters and challenge them to rematches.

Taken together, these additions suggest Nintendo is trying to preserve what made Ocarina of Time memorable while giving returning players more reasons to investigate familiar places.

Fairy Thoughts fit that approach particularly well.

They don’t appear to fundamentally change the game’s story or dungeon progression. Instead, they build on something the original already did effectively: encouraging players to be curious about Hyrule.

And if Nintendo fills the world with enough interesting messages, even veteran players may find themselves paying closer attention to places they’ve walked past hundreds of times.

When Does the Ocarina of Time Remake Release?

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time launches November 5, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2.

Nintendo has confirmed a $59.99 suggested retail price in the United States, with both the original adventure and its new features being rebuilt for the console.

We’ll have more details on Fairy Thoughts as Nintendo reveals them, including their locations, how they work, and whether they contribute to full completion.
