| Medallions open | Rainbow Bridge to Ganon’s Castle; the sages later seal Ganon |
The nine gems are the spine of the story. You collect three Spiritual Stones from the child dungeons and use them to open the Door of Time. As an adult, you awaken six Sages, who each give you a Medallion. The six Medallions let the Sages build the Rainbow Bridge to Ganon’s Castle, and at the end of the game they help seal Ganon away.

Table of Contents
Spiritual Stones
| Stone | Dungeon | Boss | Who hands it over |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kokiri’s Emerald | Inside the Great Deku Tree | Queen Gohma | The Great Deku Tree |
| Goron’s Ruby | Dodongo’s Cavern | King Dodongo | Darunia |
| Zora’s Sapphire | Inside Jabu-Jabu’s Belly | Barinade | Princess Ruto |
Kokiri’s Emerald
Defeat Queen Gohma at the bottom of the Great Deku Tree. The dying Deku Tree gives you the Kokiri’s Emerald, and a Heart Container waits in the boss room. It is the first of the three stones, and it is given to you to carry to Princess Zelda.

Goron’s Ruby
Beat King Dodongo in Dodongo’s Cavern. Darunia, who was waiting for you, hands over the Goron’s Ruby in return for freeing his people. The Goron’s Ruby comes with a Heart Container from the boss.

Zora’s Sapphire
Defeat Barinade at the end of Jabu-Jabu’s Belly. Princess Ruto gives you Zora’s Sapphire as a promise of marriage. Take the Heart Container as well. You need the Boomerang and Ruto’s Letter to get this far.

You can earn the stones in any order after the Deku Tree. Once you hold all three, go to the Temple of Time in Hyrule Castle Town. Stand before the Door of Time and play the Song of Time to open it, then take the Master Sword from the pedestal. That makes you an adult and sends you seven years forward. The stones also change Hyrule Field: the Running Man appears once you hold them, and the Bunny Hood sale becomes possible.

Medallions
| Medallion | Temple | Boss | Sage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forest Medallion | Forest Temple | Phantom Ganon | Saria |
| Fire Medallion | Fire Temple | Volvagia | Darunia |
| Water Medallion | Water Temple | Morpha | Ruto |
| Shadow Medallion | Shadow Temple | Bongo Bongo | Impa |
| Spirit Medallion | Spirit Temple | Twinrova | Nabooru |
| Light Medallion | Temple of Light | None | Rauru |
Light Medallion
The Light Medallion comes first. When you pull the Master Sword, Link is sealed away. He wakes in the Temple of Light seven years later, and Rauru tells him of Ganondorf’s rule and gives him the Light Medallion. You earn no Heart Container for it.

Forest Medallion
Defeat Phantom Ganon in the Forest Temple and step into the blue light. Saria, now the Sage of the Forest, gives you the Forest Medallion in the Chamber of Sages. You also take the Heart Container.

Fire Medallion
Defeat Volvagia in the Fire Temple. Darunia becomes the Sage of Fire and gives you the Fire Medallion. The Heart Container comes from the boss.

Water Medallion
Defeat Morpha in the Water Temple. Princess Ruto, the Sage of Water, rewards you with the Water Medallion. Lake Hylia is restored as well.

Shadow Medallion
Defeat Bongo Bongo in the Shadow Temple. Impa, the Sage of Shadow, awakens in the Chamber of Sages and gives you the Shadow Medallion.

Spirit Medallion
Defeat Twinrova in the Spirit Temple. Nabooru, who was kidnapped by the witches, becomes the Sage of Spirit and gives you the Spirit Medallion.

You can clear the Forest, Fire and Water Temples in that order, and then take the Shadow and Spirit Temples in either order. Once you hold both the Shadow and the Spirit Medallion, Princess Zelda gives you the Light Arrows in the Temple of Time. You can collect each temple’s other prizes, such as the Bow, the Hammer and the Longshot, as you go.

What they do
| Item | Effect |
|---|---|
| 3 Spiritual Stones | Open the Door of Time so that you can reach the Master Sword |
| 6 Medallions | The six Sages create the Rainbow Bridge to Ganon’s Castle, and later seal Ganon |
| Each Medallion | Counts on the Quest Status screen and proves the Sage is awake |
With all six Medallions and the Light Arrows in hand, Zelda is captured and Ganondorf’s castle rises over Hyrule Castle. The six Sages build the Rainbow Bridge that carries you across to Ganon’s Castle. You then clear the six barriers inside and climb the tower. The route is covered in Ganon’s Castle and Ganon’s Tower. Boss tactics for the temples are on Bosses and Mini-Bosses, and the warp songs Sheik teaches in each area are on Ocarina Songs.
