Magic Containers

Magic Containers in the game4 (your magic meter starts with 4 and tops out at 8)
Magic per container16 Magic Points each, so 4 containers hold 64 and 8 hold 128
Where they areSouth of North Palace, Death Mountain, Maze Island, and New Kasuto
Items you needCandle (first container, dark cave), Hammer (second container), Raft (third container, to reach Maze Island), Hammer (fourth container, to reveal New Kasuto)

There are four Magic Containers in Zelda II, and each one adds a 16-point block to your magic meter. Collecting all four takes your magic meter from 4 blocks to its maximum of 8. Spells that cost more than you have will not cast, and four wizards check your meter before they teach you: Fire needs 5 blocks (one extra container found), Reflect 6 (two found), Spell 7 (three found) and Thunder all 8. The walkthrough picks the containers up in this order: Ruto, Death Mountain, Maze Island and New Kasuto.

The four Magic Containers

1. Dark cave south of North Palace

Magic Container

Leave North Palace and cross the grass. Go past the water, then head south until you reach the mountains. Turn left (west), following the outline of the water. The cave lies south of the palace.

A cave sits in the mountains. It is dark, so you need the Candle from Parapa Palace to see inside. Enemies such as Lowders and Red Octoroks guard the way to the back, where the container sits on a ledge. The Ruto chapter picks it up on the way to Ruto Town.

2. Death Mountain, below the boulder

Magic Container

Enter the cave on Death Mountain where the Hammer is found and go to its far end. You will get the Hammer there. Leave the cave the way you came and you will be standing beside a large boulder on your left.

Smash the boulder with the Hammer and drop down the hole it uncovers. The Magic Container is directly below. See Death Mountain and the Hammer for the route to the cave.

3. Maze Island, west side

Magic Container

Reach Maze Island from Darunia by crossing the beach and the bridge. The island is a maze of overworld paths. From the action screen where you start, go south, then west, take the first path north, turn north at the split, cross the second bridge and head south along the outer path on the west side of the island.

The path ends at a hidden grotto, a side-scrolling cave screen, with the third Magic Container on a ledge inside. The Darunia chapter picks it up on the second trip to the island, after you have learned Reflect.

4. New Kasuto, the house of the old woman

Magic Container

Find the Hidden Town of Kasuto in the woods east of Old Kasuto. The town is hidden until you use the Hammer on the forest squares there; the far-left square of the top row reveals it. The cave on the way has Tektites on its first screen, so the Fire spell helps. For the town layout, see New Kasuto, Old Kasuto and the Thunder Spell.

Enter the house of the old woman on the first screen of the town. Walk to the back of the house, down into the basement, to find the fourth and last Magic Container. She only lets you in once you already hold the other three containers, so collect those first.

Tips for collecting them

The first container needs the Candle, so get the Candle in Parapa Palace before you go looking for it. The second needs the Hammer, which you collect on Death Mountain. The last one is in New Kasuto, and with it your magic meter is full for the Thunder spell. For the other kinds of pickups that restore or add to your stats, see Magic Jars and Heart Container Locations.
