Map tipOpen the map screen to see the island, pick a warp pad to jump to it, and use each dungeon’s Compass to reveal chests

Koholint Island has Mabe Village and the coast in the west, the Tal Tal mountains across the north, the desert and Animal Village in the east, Martha’s Bay on the south coast and Mt. Tamaranch with the Wind Fish’s Egg at the top. You start at Toronbo Shores, reach the dungeons in numbered order, and use the Ocarina’s warp song, Manbo’s Mambo, to cross the island once you have switched on warp pads. The sections below tell you what is in each region and which guide covers it.

How to read the Koholint Island map

Screen layout and what the markers mean

The map screen shows the whole island as a grid of screens, so you can describe a spot as “the square north of Mabe Village”. Rooms you have walked through are drawn in and unexplored parts stay blank. Dungeon entrances, shops, houses and warp pads you have found get icons. Once you own the Ocarina, the same screen is the warp menu: move the cursor to a pad and confirm to travel there.

Reading the interactive map above

The interactive map on this page marks things the game never highlights for you: all 32 Pieces of Heart, all 50 Secret Seashells, the 14 Trading Sequence items, three Fairy Bottles, three Great Fairy Fountains, houses, shops, mini-games and seven cracked walls. The Piece of Heart layer shows 33 markers because the full Heart Container you earn from the Ticking Clock challenge at the Chamber Dungeon is drawn as a marker too. The real count is 32 pieces, as explained in the Piece of Heart locations guide.

Toronbo Shores, Mabe Village and the west

You wash up on Toronbo Shores and wake in Marin and Tarin’s House. Mabe Village, just inland, is your hub: the shop that sells the Shovel, Bombs and Bow, the Trendy Game crane, the Fishing Pond and the library are all here, and Dampé’s Shack with the Chamber Dungeon is nearby. The first dungeon is covered in the Tail Cave chapter.

Mysterious Forest, Goponga Swamp and Bottle Grotto

The Mysterious Forest hides the Witch’s Hut, where you swap a Toadstool for Magic Powder. Tail Cave lies south of Mabe Village. Past the Moblin Cave, Goponga Swamp leads to Bottle Grotto, the second dungeon, and Crazy Tracy’s Health Spa nearby sells Secret Medicine. See the Bottle Grotto chapter.

Ukuku Prairie, Kanalet Castle and Key Cavern

Ukuku Prairie is the wide central field and the route to most of the island. Kanalet Castle holds the five Golden Leaves, Richard’s Villa and the Ghost’s House are along the south edge, and the Slime Key opens the gate to Key Cavern. A warp pad on the prairie becomes your main shuttle point. Details are in the Key Cavern chapter.

Tal Tal Mountain Range and the northeast

The mountains run across the north. From Tal Tal Heights you reach the warp pad by the waterfalls, the cave of Angler’s Tunnel, the Hen House and the Bird Key cave beneath it. In the northeast corner Eagle’s Tower rises above everything. See the Eagle’s Tower chapter and the Angler’s Tunnel chapter.

Yarna Desert, Animal Village and Martha’s Bay

The Animal Village is where the Trading Sequence moves between Christine, Chef Bear and Papahl, and the Yarna Desert lies beyond it. The south coast has Martha’s Bay, the Mermaid and Catfish’s Maw. Manbo lives in a cave on the cliff face just west of the Angler’s Tunnel entrance, while Manbo’s Pond itself is a warp point by Crazy Tracy’s Health Spa. See the Catfish’s Maw chapter.

Ancient Ruins, Face Shrine and Turtle Rock

The Armos Knight in the Ancient Ruins drops the Face Key for the Face Shrine on the east side, and the Rapids Ride runs down the river nearby. Turtle Rock stands at the northwest edge behind a stone head that wakes to the Frog’s Song of Soul. See the Face Shrine chapter and the Turtle Rock chapter.

Mt. Tamaranch and the Wind Fish’s Egg

Once you own all eight Instruments of the Sirens, you warp up Mt. Tamaranch to the Egg. The last chapter is Wind Fish’s Egg and the final bosses.

Warp points and Manbo’s Mambo

Switching on warp pads

Warp pads are glowing stone pads placed around the island. Stepping on one switches it on and adds it to your travel list. Early ones you will use again and again are the pad on the Tal Tal Heights waterfall ledge, the Ukuku Prairie pad, the pad on the ledge above the Cemetery, and the pad nearest the Seashell Mansion.

Learn Manbo’s Mambo

After you own the Ocarina, swim to the cave on the cliff face just west of the Angler’s Tunnel entrance and talk to Manbo the Sun Fish. Play the tune he teaches you and you can warp to any switched-on pad. Played inside a dungeon, the song returns you to the dungeon entrance. The Catfish’s Maw chapter walks you through it.
