Skyward Sword has nine games that pay out, spread over Skyloft, the Sky, Eldin, Lanayru and the Thunderhead. Most charge a small fee, several are locked behind a side quest or a dungeon, and four of them pay a Piece of Heart the first time you beat the top score. The quick reference below tells you where each game is and what you need; the sections after it cover rules and prize tiers one game at a time.

Clean Cut
Clean Cut on Bamboo Island
Peater runs this game on Bamboo Island, a small island in the Sky. It has no unlock condition: fly there, pay 10 Rupees and step up to the giant bamboo stalk. Cut it as many times as you can before the top touches the ground. A spin attack counts as two hits, cutting two falling pieces at once counts as two cuts, and a stab drops the stalk straight down so you can keep slicing it for longer. Prizes by number of cuts: 0 to 14 nothing; 15 to 19, 30 Rupees; 20 to 27, an Evil Crystal or a Monster Horn; 28 or more, a Blue Bird Feather, a Golden Skull or a Goddess Plume. The counter starts again after 64 cuts (65 counts as 1), so there is no point going past that.

Thrill Digger
Thrill Digger in Eldin Volcano
A Mogma named Tubert hosts this dig-for-Rupees game in a cave in Eldin Volcano, near a Bokoblin village; blow away the rubble blocking the entrance with a bomb. You pick a course: Beginner costs 30 Rupees on a 5 by 4 board with 4 bombs; Intermediate costs 50 Rupees on a 6 by 5 board with bombs and Rupoors; Expert costs 70 Rupees on an 8 by 5 board with 8 Rupoors and 8 bombs. Each hole you dig shows a Rupee, a Rupoor that takes Rupees back, or a bomb that ends the round and costs you a heart. A hidden time limit also runs, and Tubert warns you when it is nearly up. The harder courses hide bigger Rupees (Beginner is mostly green and blue, Intermediate mostly blue and red, Expert mostly red). Your total goes into your wallet when the round ends. Dig up every Rupee on the board and you also win a rare treasure on top, such as a Blue Bird Feather or a Goddess Plume; this works on every course, including Beginner.

Treat the board like a minesweeper puzzle. The value of a Rupee hints at how many bombs and Rupoors touch that hole (a Mogma behind the board gives tips): the higher the value, the more of them are nearby. Start in the middle, use the Rupee values to rule holes in or out, and stop as soon as the only holes left are guesses. Hitting a bomb on your first dig means you have lost the fee and a heart, so do not play with a single heart left.

Dodoh’s High Dive
Dodoh’s High Dive on Fun Fun Island
Dodoh runs this skydiving game on Fun Fun Island, but it only opens once you finish his Find My Party Wheel side quest (Side Quests), which needs a repaired Scrapper and a trip to the Isle of Songs. Dodoh lets you play the first time free, and each jump after that costs 20 Rupees. A cannon fires you into the air and you fall past five Fortune Rings, each of which raises the multiplier (up to x10) and slows the spinning board, while you steer clear of the Dodoh Balls, which drop the multiplier back to x1. At the bottom you aim for the spinning board and the colour you hit sets the prize (missing the board counts as brown): the pink and blue 50-Rupee space pays 50, red 20, blue 5, green 1, brown nothing, and grey costs you 10 Rupees. The multiplier applies to every payout except the grey penalty. Pass all five rings with no hit and land on the 50-Rupee space at x10 and Dodoh hands over a Piece of Heart, which he gives once.

Bug Heaven
Bug Heaven on Bug Rock
Strich runs a bug-catching course on Bug Rock, a netted island inside the Thunderhead. It opens after you beat Bilocyte and free Levias (True Master Sword, Levias and Bilocyte). Bring a Bug Net. You have five minutes to win anything. Bug Beginner costs 20 Rupees: catch the five bugs he shows you, which are a Sky Stag Beetle, a Skyloft Mantis, a Starry Firefly, a Lanayru Ant and a Volcanic Ladybug. Bug Wrangler costs 50 Rupees: catch ten bugs of eight different types, namely two Eldin Rollers, two Faron Grasshoppers and one each of Sand Cicada, Lanayru Ant, Gerudo Dragonfly, Woodland Rhino Beetle, Blessed Butterfly and Skyloft Mantis.

Your time sets the prize. Beginner pays 30 Rupees within five minutes and 50 Rupees under three; under two minutes you win five of one random bug (Blessed Butterfly, Deku Hornet, Skyloft Mantis or Sky Stag Beetle). Wrangler pays 80 Rupees within five minutes, five of a random bug (Woodland Rhino Beetle, Gerudo Dragonfly, Lanayru Ant or Volcanic Ladybug) under three minutes, and five of a rarer bug (Eldin Roller, Faron Grasshopper, Sand Cicada, Starry Firefly or Volcanic Ladybug) under two. Strich also sets a bug-catching challenge when you ask for the beetle in Beedle’s Find My Beetle quest, and the prize bugs are an easy way to fill the collection on Bugs and Treasures.

Rickety Coaster
Rickety Coaster in the Lanayru Shipyard
Gortram runs this mine-cart ride in the Lanayru Shipyard. A ride costs 20 Rupees and you choose between two courses. On the Scary course, a time under 30 seconds pays 100 Rupees and a time under 40 seconds pays 50 Rupees. On the Heart Stopping course, finishing in under 1:05 gives you a Piece of Heart the first time, and finishing under 1:10 pays a random rare treasure. Ride the Heart Stopping track a few times to learn it, and take the right-hand path near the end for the quickest line.

Pumpkin Pull
Pumpkin Pull with Fledge
Fledge runs this bow game in front of the Sparring Hall in Skyloft, once his I Want to Be Strong side quest is finished (Side Quests). Each try costs 20 Rupees and lasts 90 seconds. Fledge tosses pumpkins in an arc and you shoot them with the Bow; a pumpkin cannot be hit while he is still holding it. Your first hit scores 10 points, each hit in a row adds 10 more up to 50 per pumpkin, a miss resets the chain, and sparkling pumpkins score double. Prizes: from roughly 100 to 150 points up to 399 pays 50 Rupees, 400 to 599 pays a rare treasure, and 600 or more pays a Piece of Heart.

Pumpkin Landing jobs
Harp job at the Lumpy Pumpkin
The harp duet is the last of Pumm’s chores at the Lumpy Pumpkin (the chandelier and the other chores are covered on Side Quests). Once you have the Goddess’s Harp you can play along with Kina at night on Pumpkin Landing, free of charge, and you can come back to repeat it for Rupees. Strum to match the swaying arms of the audience. A good show pays 20 Rupees and a fantastic one pays 50, while a weak showing pays nothing.

Pumpkin shed job
Once Pumm’s pumpkin chore is done, you can help Kina again and carry pumpkins from the field to the shed for 50 Rupees each time. You must keep your balance and not drop a single one, so steer with small stick movements.

Thunder Dragon’s Lightning Round
Thunder Dragon’s Lightning Round in Lanayru Gorge
After you heal the Thunder Dragon with the Life Tree Fruit (Song of the Hero), he offers a free challenge in Lanayru Gorge: replay the Silent Realm trials, or fight a chain of the bosses you have already beaten, with the first boss of your choosing. Bottled items cannot be used during the fights, only the items you had at the time and your equipped shield, though a Stamina, Guardian or Air Potion you drank beforehand keeps working until it runs out. Quit after a win to bank the prize; if you lose a fight you keep only what you had already banked. Rewards climb with each win: 20 Rupees for the first boss, a Piece of Heart for the fourth (200 Rupees on later runs) and the Hylian Shield for the eighth (1000 Rupees later), with thousands of Rupees for the longest chains. In Hero Mode all twelve bosses are open from the start.

Which games are worth playing
For a 100% file, play Dodoh’s High Dive, Rickety Coaster, Pumpkin Pull and the Lightning Round for the four Pieces of Heart, and keep going back to Thrill Digger, Clean Cut and Bug Heaven for treasures and bugs. The other prizes are mostly Rupees, so go for them when your wallet is low. Every Piece of Heart is listed on Heart Piece Locations, and shop upgrades are on Item and Equipment Upgrades.
