Skyward Sword has 12 kinds of bug and 16 kinds of treasure, and nothing else in the game uses them: bugs power up your potions, and treasures pay for every Scrap Shop upgrade (see Item and Equipment Upgrades). Bugs live in fixed regions such as Faron Woods, Eldin Volcano or Lanayru Desert, while treasures mostly come from enemies, chests, digging spots and mini-games. The sections below tell you where each one turns up, how to get it and what it is used for.

How to catch bugs
Walk up slowly and use the Bug Net, which you buy from Beedle for 50 Rupees, or roll into the tree or wall a bug is sitting on so that it drops to the ground. Skittish kinds, such as the Sand Cicada and Faron Grasshopper, fly or leap away when you get close, so approach from behind, or stun them first with Glittering Spores. The Big Bug Net is twice the size and makes everything easier. Beedle also sells a Bug Medal for 1,000 Rupees, which marks likely bug spots on your map.

Sky Stag Beetle
Look for this beetle around Skyloft, rolling into trees to knock it down; it is quick, so approach carefully before you grab it. Needed for: 2 for Stamina Potion+, 2 for Air Potion+ (4 in total for every upgrade).

Skyloft Mantis
Another Skyloft bug that is easy to find. Check around the plants and clay pots on the island and net it where it sits. Needed for: 2 for Air Potion+, 2 for Revitalizing Potion+ (4 in total for every upgrade).

Blessed Butterfly
The most common bug in the game. It flutters around Skyloft, the Surface and even the Sky islands, and it gathers near Gossip Stones and Goddess Walls. Swing the net at it while it hovers, or play the Goddess’s Harp near a group of butterflies to reveal hidden stones. You need it for the Heart Potion and Guardian Potion upgrades, so catch several. Needed for: 3 for Heart Potion+, 3 for Heart Potion++, 3 for Guardian Potion+ (9 in total for every upgrade).

Starry Firefly
This glowing insect only comes out at night. Look for it in Skyloft, in the Waterfall Cave and on Pumpkin Landing and Beedle’s Island. Sleep until night, and walk up to it slowly. Needed for: 3 for Guardian Potion+ (3 in total for every upgrade).

Deku Hornet
Hornets live in nests in Faron Woods and the Deep Woods. Shoot the nest down from a distance with the Slingshot or the Beetle, then net the hornets as they swarm out. Do not stand beside the nest when it falls. Needed for: 3 for Heart Potion++, 3 for Revitalizing Potion+ (6 in total for every upgrade).

Woodland Rhino Beetle
A beetle that clings to vine-covered walls and trees in the Sealed Grounds, Faron Woods and the Deep Woods. Roll into the trunk or wall it clings to and pick it up when it drops. Needed for: 1 for Heart Potion+, 2 for Revitalizing Potion+, 2 for Revitalizing Potion++ (5 in total for every upgrade).

Faron Grasshopper
Found in the Sealed Grounds, Faron Woods and the Deep Woods. It hops away the moment you get close, so use Glittering Spores to stun it, then net it. Needed for: 1 for Stamina Potion+, 1 for Guardian Potion+ (2 in total for every upgrade).

Eldin Roller
A rare bug that pushes a little ball of earth around Eldin Volcano. You will find it around the camps of Eldin Volcano and in front of the Earth Temple. Take it from behind while it is busy rolling. Needed for: 1 for Heart Potion++, 2 for Guardian Potion+ (3 in total for every upgrade).

Volcanic Ladybug
These red beetles sit still in groups in Eldin Volcano, often in grass and on the sandy paths, so they are the easiest of the volcano bugs to catch. A net is the simplest way to get several at once. Needed for: 1 for Heart Potion+, 3 for Stamina Potion+ (4 in total for every upgrade).

Gerudo Dragonfly
A desert dragonfly that flies a long way when startled. Creep up on it in Lanayru Desert and use the net while it is perched. Needed for: 2 for Stamina Potion+, 1 for Revitalizing Potion++ (3 in total for every upgrade).

Lanayru Ant
Ants gather in swarms in Lanayru Mine, Lanayru Desert and the Lanayru Caves. Swing the net at the swarm to catch them. Needed for: 2 for Air Potion+, 3 for Revitalizing Potion++ (5 in total for every upgrade).

Sand Cicada
The hardest bug in the game: it flies off in a flash. Find it in Lanayru Desert, stun it with Glittering Spores if you have them, and swing the net the moment you are in range. Needed for: 1 for Heart Potion++, 1 for Revitalizing Potion++ (2 in total for every upgrade).

Bug Heaven and selling bugs
Once Bilocyte is beaten, Strich runs Bug Heaven on Bug Rock in the Thunderhead (details in Mini-Games). The Bug Beginner course costs 20 Rupees and the Bug Wrangler course costs 50. Finish quickly to earn a bigger prize. His course is also how you win back Beedle’s beetle for the Find My Beetle side quest. Strich also buys bugs at night at the Knight Academy, if you have spares.

Treasures
Most treasures are monster drops, a few are pulled out of chests and Silent Realms, and a few come from mini-games and bird catching. Keep a Treasure Medal in your Adventure Pouch (it is in a Goddess Chest on an island in the Sky) to make treasure appear more often. At night Rupin buys treasures in his home, and the rarest ones, the Blue Bird Feather, Golden Skull and Goddess Plume, sell for 100 Rupees each, so do not sell them before your upgrades are done.
