Ravio’s Shop is the room inside your own house where the rabbit-hooded merchant Ravio hands out the tools you need for dungeons. You do not find the Bow, Bombs, Hookshot and the rest in chests: you rent them for a small fee and keep them until you run out of hearts, or you pay a lot more to own them for good. The shop is in Link’s House in Hyrule; the Lorule copy of the building, the Vacant House, holds no shop.

How renting and buying work

Renting items

Ravio first lends you the Bow for nothing, once, after you have seen his signs near the Eastern Palace. His full shop opens after you return the Smooth Gem to Oren in Zora’s Domain and go home: from then on you walk up to the counter, pick an item and pay its rental price. You may rent as many items as your wallet allows, and each rental lasts until you lose all your hearts, so one rental can serve you through several dungeons.

Now and then Ravio runs a daily special that marks down the rental price of one or two items. On one visit the Tornado Rod was offered for only 20 Rupees instead of its usual 50, so read the price on screen before you confirm.

What happens when you fall

If your hearts hit zero, Ravio’s bird Sheerow swoops in and carries every rented item back to the shop. You keep your Rupees and progress, but you must walk to the counter and rent your tools again. Items you bought stay with you. The Bow is the one special case: renting it again costs 10 Rupees until the Eastern Palace is cleared, and 50 after that.

Buying items

Once you hold the Pendant of Courage, the Pendant of Wisdom and the Pendant of Power, Ravio tells you he now sells his stock as well. A bought item is yours permanently, so Sheerow can never take it back. Your first purchase is half price (the Bow came to 400 Rupees), and every purchase after that costs the full figure in the table below. Ravio owns one copy of each item, so an item that another customer still has out is not for sale until it comes back.

If you buy every item in the shop, Ravio closes up and retires, thanking you for the Rupees. The 1,200 Rupee price tags on the Fire Rod and Ice Rod make them the most expensive items, so they are the main reason to save up.

The items

Bow

Bow

The Bow is your first rental and costs nothing the first time. It fires an arrow where you are facing and lets you aim on the move. You use it on the two switches near the pillars that open the road to the Eastern Palace, and the dungeon itself is built around it. To buy it, pay 800 Rupees, or 400 if it is your first purchase.

Bomb

Bombs

Bombs rent for 50 Rupees and sell for 800. Throw or place them to open cracked walls and hurt enemies. You need them for the Dark Palace.

Boomerang

Boomerang

The Boomerang costs 50 Rupees to rent or 800 to buy. It stuns enemies, snatches Rupees from a distance and hits far switches before flying back to your hand.

Hookshot

Hookshot

Hookshot rental is 50 Rupees and the purchase price is 800. It pulls you across gaps to hooks and other fixed targets. You need it for the Swamp Palace and for crossing the broken bridge east of the Tower of Hera.

Hammer

Hammer

The Hammer rents for 50 Rupees and sells for 800. It flattens pegs and smashes brittle objects, and you take it to the Tower of Hera at the top of Death Mountain.

Tornado Rod

Tornado Rod

The Tornado Rod rents for 50 Rupees (less during a special, such as 20) and sells for 800. It blows enemies and objects about and lifts you into the air. The House of Gales on Lake Hylia is built around it.

Fire Rod

Fire Rod

The Fire Rod rents for 100 Rupees and sells for 1,200. It raises a pillar of flame that lights torches and burns enemies. You need it in the Ice Ruins. Buying it as your first purchase brings it down to 600.

Ice Rod

Ice Rod

The Ice Rod rents for 100 Rupees and sells for 1,200. It freezes enemies in a blast of ice, and you need it for Turtle Rock.

Sand Rod

Sand Rod

The Sand Rod is missing from the shelf at first. Sage Osfala gives it to you after you rescue him, but tells you it is Ravio’s rental and must go back. After the Sage’s chamber, Sheerow collects it, and Ravio then announces that a customer has returned it. From that point it costs 50 Rupees to rent or 800 to buy, and you need it to raise sand pillars in the Desert Palace.
