This chapter takes Link from the ambush in the woods to his first trip back through time. You cross the Deku flower rooms, meet the Happy Mask Salesman, then spend the first days in Clock Town as a Deku Scrub: free the Great Fairy of Magic, win the Bombers’ secret code, fetch the Moon’s Tear, trade it for a Land Title Deed and ride the freed flower to a Heart Piece. At midnight on the Final Day you bubble-blast Skull Kid, take back the Ocarina of Time and play the Song of Time. After the reset you learn the Song of Healing and receive the Deku Mask.

Skull Kid and the Deku curse

Lost in the woods

Link loses the fight before you ever get control for long. Skull Kid, wearing Majora’s Mask, steals the Ocarina of Time and rides off on Epona. Chase him on foot through the foggy woods. Skull Kid taunts you about your horse, which he says he did you a favour by getting rid of, and then curses you. Cut the bushes along the way for a few rupees.

Skull Kid wearing Majora's Mask standing in the foggy woods

Skull Kid curses Link and turns him into a Deku Scrub (“Now, that’s a good look for you! You’ll stay here looking that way forever!”) and runs off with Tael. Tatl, a fairy who was left behind by her brother Tael, shouts after them and then, after a clumsy apology, offers to be your partner at least until you catch Skull Kid, on the condition that you help her. From now on, when Tatl has something to say about a person or an object, press the button shown to hear it.

Deku flower rooms and the Deku Nut

Tatl asks you to open the first door, so walk to it and learn the Deku flower. Stand on a flower, press A to dive in, aim with the stick and release A to shoot out of it. In the air Link glides on the two flowers he holds. Use the flowers to cross each gap in the next rooms.

On one of the mossy platforms is a chest holding your first item, the Deku Nut. Press B while flying to drop one: on impact it makes a blinding flash that freezes enemies in their tracks. Fly on to the last platform, let Tatl show you Z-targeting, and go through the exit.

Tatl uses the quiet moments to teach you Z-targeting. Hold Z to look at a person or object, even one that is far away, or press it with nothing to target to look straight ahead. She then calls you over to a gloomy tree that looks as if it might start crying at any moment. Walk on through the stone corridor and over a wooden bridge to reach the Salesman.

The Happy Mask Salesman

A narrow passage leads to a room where the Happy Mask Salesman steps in. He greets you with “You’ve met with a terrible fate, haven’t you?”, says he owns the Happy Mask Shop and travels far and wide in search of masks, and has been following Skull Kid, who stole a precious mask from him. If you can get back the precious item that was stolen from you, he will return you to normal. All he asks is that you also get back his mask. He is a very busy fellow, however, and must leave this place in three days.

Leave the Clock Tower and step out into South Clock Town. Tatl grumbles that three days is a measly 72 hours even if you never sleep, but she thinks the Great Fairy will know what Skull Kid is up to. A banner with the town’s name appears each time you cross into South, East, West or North Clock Town. You now have 72 hours before the moon falls on the town. Spin through bushes and break pots for rupees as you go, because you will need some soon.

The Clock Town Stray Fairy

Tatl tells you to visit the Great Fairy, who has been scattered in pieces by Skull Kid. At the fountain in North Clock Town her sprites plead with you (“I have been broken and shattered to pieces by the masked Skull Kid”) and ask you to find the one Stray Fairy lost in town. The one missing piece is a Stray Fairy who wanders the town. During the day she hovers over the Laundry Pool in the southwest of South Clock Town; hop across the little pond to touch her. At night she moves to East Clock Town and floats near the pole in the middle of the plaza. At the Laundry Pool a fairy voice repeats the request and asks you to return her to the Fairy Fountain in North Clock Town.

Great Fairy of Magic: Magic Power and bubbles

Carry the Stray Fairy to the Great Fairy’s Fountain at the north end of North Clock Town and step to the water so she joins the other fairies. The Great Fairy rises from the pool and thanks Tatl and you for putting her broken body back together. The Great Fairy of Magic is whole again and rewards Deku Link with Magic Power and the bubble attack. Hold B to blow a bubble and release it to fire; each shot uses magic, and the magic meter refills from Magic Jars and potions. She also advises you to talk to the man who lives in the observatory outside of town, who may know where Skull Kid is, and warns you not to underestimate the child’s powers. A Hylian Link gets a different gift here, the Great Fairy’s Mask, so return after the Song of Healing; the next chapter covers it.

Tingle’s map

Tingle floats on his balloon in North Clock Town. He asks whether you might be a forest fairy, envies you for having a fairy of your own and offers a map “for cheap as a sign of my friendship”; pay him 5 rupees for the Clock Town map. Maps stay with you when you return to the first day.

Bombers’ secret code (hide-and-seek)

Pop the Majora balloon

The Bombers gang plays in North Clock Town, where a boy is shooting at a balloon with Majora’s face on it. Stand under it, charge a bubble with B, aim up and let go to burst it. The Bombers notice you and challenge you to hide-and-seek: catch all five of them before time runs out. They tell you they have a hideout that leads to the observatory and that you will need a code to get in, but you must pass their test first. Each catch gets a cry of “You caught me!” and a count of how many are left.

Where the five Bombers hide

The five Bombers are spread over three parts of town. Two are in North Clock Town, one behind a tree and one behind the slide at the Deku Playground. Two are in East Clock Town, one beside the bell on the Stock Pot Inn roof and one on the Milk Bar roof with a Cucco under his arm. The last is in West Clock Town, in the gap between the Post Office and the Swordsman’s School. Deku flowers nearby put the roof spots within reach. Touch a Bomber with your spin, or stun him with a bubble, to catch him. After the fifth catch the gang tells you the hideout code, a five-digit number that is different on every save file. Write it down, because the Notebook is not yours yet; if you lose the code, play hide-and-seek again.

The gang will not give you the Bombers’ Notebook, because it does not take Deku Scrubs (“No way! No Scrubs!”). They once let a kid who was not human join the gang and regretted it, but they keep their promise to tell you the code, and they say they will only tell you once. You collect the Notebook later by going through the hideout as Hylian Link, so this is nothing to worry about now.

Astral Observatory and the Moon’s Tear

Through the Bombers’ hideout

The hideout entrance is in East Clock Town, guarded by a Bomber. Say the five-digit code on the number screen and he lets you in (he is under orders from Jim not to let anyone in who does not know it). A Bomber inside tells you the telescope man has lots of cool stuff. The tunnel is full of water; a Deku Scrub can hop across it a few times and then sinks, so make use of the platforms and flowers. Follow it up to the Astral Observatory.

On the way, a dim room holds a Scarecrow in a red hat. He invites you to dance until dawn and offers to teach you a song that manipulates the flow of time, which you can leave for now; the section on passing the time explains what the dance does.

Scarecrow with arms spread saying he knows of a mysterious song that allows you to manipulate the flow of time

Look through the telescope

Professor Shikashi says that a strange-looking child has joined him, that Skull Kid threatened to steal his Moon’s Tear and break his instruments, and that Skull Kid is probably causing trouble around the Clock Tower. He lets you use his telescope. Look toward Clock Town and zoom in on Skull Kid at the top of the Clock Tower. While you watch, a Moon’s Tear falls from the sky.

He remarks that the only way up to the tower is through the clock door, which opens only on the eve of the carnival, and wonders about the loud noise. Step away from the telescope and walk out of the Observatory. The Moon’s Tear lies in a crater just outside; pick it up (“You got the Moon’s Tear! Its sparkling beauty radiates rather strangely”). The Observatory also holds a Scarecrow, whom you can use to pass time, as described below.

Land Title Deed and the Clock Town Heart Piece

Trade the Moon’s Tear to the Business Scrub

Take the tunnel back and head to South Clock Town. Beside the Clock Tower a Business Scrub sits in a Deku flower, looking for a rare stone to give his wife. He says he is thinking of closing his shop to buy her a gift, because his wares are sold out, and he has heard of a stone called the Moon’s Tear. Open the item screen, set the Moon’s Tear on a C button and hand it over. He gives you the Land Title Deed (Clock Town) and his spot with its Deku flower.

Heart Piece: Clock Tower ledge

Jump into the flower and aim at the wooden ledge in front of the Clock Tower. On the ledge you find a Piece of Heart. Four pieces make one new Heart Container. This is the first of the 52 Pieces of Heart in the game.

Bank your rupees

If you have rupees to spare, deposit them at the bank in West Clock Town. Money in the bank survives the Song of Time, while rupees in your wallet are lost. The Heart Piece for 5,000 rupees of total deposits is far off, but starting early costs nothing.

Passing the time until the Final Night

Skip hours with the Scarecrow

The Clock Tower door opens at midnight on the Final Night, the last night before the moon falls. If you are done in town, talk to the Scarecrow in the Astral Observatory or the one in the Trading Post in West Clock Town and say yes when he asks you to dance. Each dance skips ahead to the next dawn or dusk, and the game announces the new time with a banner such as “Night of the Second Day, 36 Hours Remain” or “Dawn of the Final Day, 24 Hours Remain”, so a few dances bring you to the Final Night.

Wait in South Clock Town beside the flower. On the Final Night the moon looms over the town and the ground shakes; at midnight the door above the clock opens.

The Final Night at the Clock Tower

Hit Skull Kid with a bubble

When the clock strikes twelve, fly from the South Clock Town flower to the open door and climb the stairs to the roof. A countdown clock appears on the screen. Skull Kid stands there with Majora’s Mask on and calls the moon down on the town; Tatl and Tael plead with him to give the mask back, and he mutters about the four who live in the swamp, mountain, ocean and canyon and says to bring them here. Hit him with a bubble. He staggers and drops the Ocarina of Time; pick it up.

Ocarina of Time and the Song of Time

You get the Ocarina of Time back (“Princess Zelda gave you this precious instrument”), and Tatl tells you to set it on C-Down and to use A and the four C buttons to play. A memory of Princess Zelda follows, in which she says that although you knew each other only a short time she feels she has known you forever, and that she believes you will meet again; she teaches you the Song of Time. Play it back with A and the C buttons to learn it. You keep the Ocarina and every song you learn for the rest of the game.

Play the Song of Time on the roof, and a box asks whether to save and return to the Dawn of the First Day. Answer yes. The three days start over. You lose the rupees and consumables you carry, plus trade items such as the Land Title Deed. You keep the Ocarina, songs, masks, maps, bank deposits, Heart Pieces and the Magic Power upgrade.

Song of Healing and the Deku Mask

How to get the Song of Healing

On the new First Day you are still a Deku Scrub. Tatl reminds you that the Salesman promised to return you to normal. Walk back into the Clock Tower and talk to him; he asks whether you recovered your precious item from that imp, then asks you to listen closely to the song he is about to perform and to follow along after him. He plays the Song of Healing, a tune that soothes cursed spirits and magic, and you repeat it after him on the Ocarina.

How to get the Deku Mask

As a keepsake the Salesman gives you the Deku Mask (“You got the Deku Mask to keep as a memento!”), and the curse on Link is sealed away so that he is his Hylian self again. Set it on a C button from the Select Item screen: wearing it turns Link into a Deku Scrub again, and taking it off makes him Hylian. You will use the Song of Healing many more times on troubled spirits across Termina.

He then explains the mask Skull Kid wears. It is Majora’s Mask, an old cursed mask once used in dark rituals, and he begs you to get it back. Tatl works out that the swamp, mountains, ocean and canyon Tael mentioned are the four regions just outside Clock Town, one in each direction. Tatl adds that the gate straight ahead leads toward the swamp. Head for one of them when you are ready.
