Southern Swamp & Deku Palace Guide – The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 100% Walkthrough

Southern Swamp Route: Heart Piece, Woodfall Map, and First Bottle

At the start of the new cycle, play the Inverted Song of Time again and carry at least 20 Rupees. Leave Clock Town through the south gate as normal Link.

Get the Termina Field Story Scene and Reach the Southern Swamp

Run south through Termina Field, pass through the hollow log, and approach the large tree at the field’s southern edge. Tatl stops Link for a scene about how she and Tael first met Skull Kid. When it ends, continue around the tree and enter the Road to Southern Swamp.

Find the Road to Southern Swamp Piece of Heart

Do not run straight through the road. Look for the tall tree near its center, surrounded by Bad Bats. Defeat the bats at the base, then use a Deku Bubble to hit the bat clinging near the vines. Climb to the flat top of the tree and collect the Piece of Heart. Your total is now eight.

Buy the Woodfall Map from Tingle

Continue south until you see Tingle floating overhead. Pop his balloon with a Deku Bubble and buy the Woodfall Map for 20 Rupees. If you are short on money, cut nearby bushes or grass.

Activate the Southern Swamp Owl Statue

Continue into the Southern Swamp and find the Swamp Tourist Center, the large building on the water. On N64, activate the nearby Owl Statue with your sword.

The Swamp Tourist Center, the large building on the water in the Southern Swamp.

Majora’s Mask 3D difference: Kaepora Gaebora waits beside the Owl Statue in the 3DS version and teaches Link the Song of Soaring immediately. On N64, Link learns the song later in the Southern Swamp storyline.

Reach the Woods of Mystery

From the Tourist Center, head toward the lily pads on the opposite side of the swamp. Deku Link can hop across them, or normal Link can swim. Follow the eastern side until you reach the Magic Hags’ Potion Shop. The dark opening behind the shop leads to the Woods of Mystery.

Follow the Monkey Through the Woods of Mystery

The route through the Woods of Mystery changes each day. A monkey near the entrance can guide you. Wear the Bunny Hood, speak to him, and stay close as he moves. Avoid fighting the Snappers, since stopping can make you lose track of your guide.

If you want to navigate without following the monkey, use the N64 routes below:

  • First Day: Left, Right, Right, Straight, Left, Left
  • Second Day: Right, Left, Straight, Left, Left, Right
  • Final Day: Straight, Left, Right, Right, Straight, Right
Bottles Majora's Mask Item

Bottle #1: Rescue Koume

At the end of the maze, find Koume lying on the ground and speak with her. She needs medicine, but you do not have a bottle yet. Leave the woods through a marked exit and return to the Potion Shop.

Climb the ladder and tell Kotake what happened to Koume. Kotake gives you your first Bottle, filled with a Red Potion.

Majora’s Mask 3D difference: Kotake is at the Potion Shop on the First Day. On the Second or Final Day in the 3DS version, she moves into the Woods of Mystery, so look for her there.

Return to Koume and speak with her first. When the conversation prompts you to give her an item, choose the Red Potion. Do not use the potion from an item button while standing nearby, or Link may drink it himself.

Koume recovers and flies back toward the swamp. The Red Potion is gone, but the Empty Bottle remains in your inventory. The monkeys outside then tell you that one of their companions has been captured by the Deku after investigating the trouble at Woodfall.

Pictograph Box Majora's Mask Item

Get the Pictograph Box from Koume

Return to the Swamp Tourist Center and climb the ladder to the boat-tour counter. Speak with Koume. Since you rescued her, the boat ride is free, and she gives you the Pictograph Box before the tour begins.

Take the Boat to Deku Palace

The boat follows a fixed route, so you do not need to steer. Let it carry you through the swamp. It clears the Big Octo that blocks access to the poisoned southern area and continues to the Deku Palace stop. Choose Yes when prompted to disembark.

Follow the monkey to the palace entrance. To enter the palace, approach the guards while wearing the Deku Mask.

Deku Palace: Heart Piece, Magic Bean, and the Sonata of Awakening

Find the Piece of Heart in the palace gardens

Enter Deku Palace as Deku Link and take the left passage instead of going straight to the throne room. Move through the two garden sections while avoiding the guards. In the second garden, wait for the guards to circle away from the tall grass, then run in and open the chest for a Piece of Heart. This brings your total to nine.

Magic Beans Majora's Mask Item

Get Magic Beans and Spring Water

The right passage leads to a hole with a Business Scrub who sells Magic Beans. Take the free sample, then buy at least one more. Fill your Bottle with Spring Water from the pool in the cave before leaving.

Reach the Deku King and photograph him

Get caught by a guard to enter the throne room. Before you speak with the Deku King, use the Pictograph Box to take a clear picture of him. Keep the photo for a later Pictograph Contest at the Swamp Tourist Center. Then speak with the imprisoned monkey.

Rescue the monkey and learn the Sonata of Awakening

Leave the throne room and follow the monkey’s directions to the east side of the palace. Hop along the water to reach the soft soil patch. Plant a Magic Bean and water it with Spring Water if it is not raining. Ride the growing plant to the upper passage, then use Deku flowers to cross to the monkey’s cage. As normal Link, speak to the monkey and try to cut its ropes. When he asks for your instrument, change to Deku Link and play the Sonata of Awakening.

The Deku King mistakes the song for proof of the monkey’s guilt and throws Link out of the palace. The monkey is still imprisoned, so you will return later with the Deku Princess.

Song of Soaring and the Outside Heart Piece

Learn the Song of Soaring

From the east side of the palace, use the Deku flower to reach the high platforms over the swamp. Fly between the flowers and small ledges, watching for Dragonflies. At the far end, speak with Kaepora Gaebora beside the Owl Statue to learn the Song of Soaring. Activate the statue so you can warp back to this route.

Heart Piece #8: Reach Woodfall

Use the flowers to cross to the Woodfall area. Before raising the temple, follow the platforms past the Hiploops and Mad Scrubs. Use Deku Bubbles to stun the Hiploops before attacking, and avoid the Mad Scrubs’ nuts while flying. Continue from flower to flower until you reach a large chest on a raised platform. Open it for a Piece of Heart, bringing your total to ten.

Activate the Woodfall Owl Statue, then return to Clock Town and play the Song of Time. At the start of the new cycle, play the Inverted Song of Time and use the Song of Soaring to return to Woodfall. The permanent progress you collected, including the Heart Piece and Sonata of Awakening, stays with you.

Raise Woodfall Temple

Stand on the central pedestal in the Woodfall area and play the Sonata of Awakening as Deku Link. The temple rises from the swamp. Fly to its entrance and go inside. The sequence below follows the Nintendo 64 version; some Stray Fairy placements differ in Majora’s Mask 3D.
