Legend of Princess (2009)

A fast-paced Zelda-inspired platformer featuring sword combos, creative weapons, hidden secrets, and challenging bosses.

About This Game

Legend of Princess is a free, Zelda-inspired action platformer created by independent developer Joakim “Konjak” Sandberg. Released in January 2009, the game takes familiar elements from The Legend of Zelda and transforms them into a fast-paced, side-scrolling adventure filled with sword combos, platforming challenges, hidden treasures, and elaborate boss battles.

Players take control of Bind, a green-clad hero who must fight his way through the Dirt Temple to rescue a princess. Although the premise sounds familiar, the gameplay is quite different from a traditional Zelda adventure. Combat takes center stage, with an unusually versatile sword moveset that lets Bind unleash spinning attacks, powerful downward strikes, and other combinations while dodging enemies and navigating obstacles.

Before entering the temple, players choose a secondary weapon and a special movement ability. The available weapons include a boomerang, bow, and mouse bombs, while movement options range from a feather-assisted double jump to a Hookshot or the ability to glide with a chicken. These choices change how players approach combat and platforming, giving the short adventure considerable replay value.

The Dirt Temple is the game’s only level, but it packs in plenty of variety. Players encounter recognizable Zelda-inspired enemies, collect gems and hearts, uncover secret passages, solve occasional environmental puzzles, and face several memorable bosses. The colorful pixel art and fluid character animations are particular highlights, reflecting the distinctive style that would later become familiar to fans of Sandberg’s commercial games.

Rather than attempting to recreate Hyrule or tell a sprawling Zelda story, Legend of Princess focuses on delivering a compact arcade experience. A complete playthrough can take around 20 minutes, although experimenting with different equipment combinations and mastering the combat provides reasons to return.

Legend of Princess is available as a free Windows download from Konjak’s official website. The game was originally developed for older versions of Windows, and the creator notes that compatibility issues may occur on modern systems. No emulator or original Zelda ROM is required.
