Maple is Syrup’s apprentice, a witch who flies on a broom and crashes into you at random. Each crash scatters items from both of you onto the ground, and you race her to collect them. She can drop a Piece of Heart, Gasha Seeds, rings and potions, along with the usual Rupees, Hearts and bombs. She cannot take anything from you. Maple is also the key to the Magic Oar in the trading sequence.

When Maple appears

Kill count

Maple only shows up after you have defeated enough enemies. Kill 30 enemies, or 15 while you wear Maple’s Ring. Her music starts, and her shadow crosses the screen before she flies in. You can have her appear once and move on, or hunt her for more prizes. Maple’s Ring is one of the rings you can find, and it is covered in Magical Rings.

Maple flies only through the predetermined areas, and both eras have them. In the past she can fly through time portals. The clearing outside Lynna Village in the past is one of her spots, and the grassy fields outside Lynna City and the Talus Peaks are others. For a route that includes her, see the Deku Forest and the Mystery Seeds chapter.

The race

Make her crash into you

Step into her flight path so that she collides with you. Both of you drop items. Your items can include Rupees, Hearts, bombs and Mystical Seeds. Maple’s items can include Gasha Seeds, Rings, potions and Pieces of Heart, and she may also drop Rupees and Hearts. Then collect everything you can before she does.

Maple always heads for the most valuable item first, even when a cheaper one is closer. The written guides rank the items in roughly this order: Piece of Heart, Gasha Seed, rings, potions, then the cheaper items you drop. Pick up a Piece of Heart the moment it appears, because it is the one prize she hunts hardest.

Reading her reply

When the scramble ends, Maple gives a short reply that depends on who collected more items. If you collect more than she does, she says she will remember this. If you both collect the same number, she says it was not bad but that is all you get today. If she collects more than you, she laughs and flies off. She cannot take your rings, potions or Gasha Seeds, so the only real cost of a lost race is a few Rupees and Seeds.

Maple’s upgrades

If Maple collects a lot of your Rupees, she eventually trades her broom for a vacuum cleaner. The vacuum lets her collect items faster and sweep up more of the scattered pile. In a Linked Game she rides a flying saucer, which is faster still.

Touching Book and the Magic Oar

In the past, Maple is the person to trade with for the Magic Oar, the tenth item in the trading sequence. She wants a Touching Book, which her grandmother Syrup has taken away from her, so she sobs when she sees one. You get the Touching Book earlier in the trading chain, from a gloomy boy in the past, and she swaps it for the Magic Oar. The whole route is on the Lynna Trades and the Noble Sword chapter, and the full list is on Trading Sequence.

Her Piece of Heart

Maple is one of only two random sources of Pieces of Heart in the game; the other is the Gasha Nut. Use the Maple’s Ring trick to make her appear more often, and watch the scramble closely for the Piece of Heart. For the full count of the twelve Pieces of Heart, see Heart Piece Locations.

Linked Game

In a Linked Game, Maple rides a flying saucer rather than a broom or a vacuum cleaner. Her trade in Oracle of Seasons is different: she takes a Lon Lon Egg there, so the Touching Book trade belongs to Oracle of Ages only.
