Rod of Seasons and the Four Seasons

Powers4 (winter, summer, spring, autumn), one from each Season Spirit
Where you get itThe pedestal in the Temple of Seasons, Subrosia, reached through the portal beside Eyeglass Lake
How it worksStand on a tree stump and swing the Rod to change the whole screen to one season
Season needed forFrozen water, snow drifts, green vines, drained lakes, bloomed rock flowers and red leaf piles all depend on the season

The Rod of Seasons changes the season of the Holodrum overworld, but only from a tree stump. You pick it up in Subrosia, and each of the four Season Spirits adds one power to it: winter, summer, spring and autumn. Once you own a power, you can switch to that season at any stump and the change lasts until you switch again. Because each season opens different paths, you will move between seasons many times in the 100% route.

The four season powers

Rod of Seasons
PowerSpiritTowerWhat it does
WinterSpirit of WinterTower of WinterFreezes water into walkable ice and builds snow drifts you can climb
SummerSpirit of SummerTower of SummerGrows vines up cliffs and dries up shallow creeks and lakes
SpringSpirit of SpringTower of SpringBlooms the rock flowers so you can cut through them and reach the Spring Banana tree
AutumnSpirit of AutumnTower of AutumnCovers paths in red leaves and mushroom trees, and the leaf piles can be dug out with the Shovel

Get the winter power first. The Temple of Seasons sits in Subrosia, and its four corner towers each hold one Spirit. Visit the Tower of Winter first, then the others as your route opens them. The walkthrough chapter on the first Rod pickup covers the route in order: Subrosia, the Tower of Winter and the Rod of Seasons.

Next comes the summer power, earned in the Tower of Summer. Summer grows the vines that let you climb to the entrance of Poison Moth’s Lair (Dungeon 3) in the Spool Swamp. See the Tower of Summer and Rosa’s Ribbon.

The spring power comes from the Tower of Spring, reached through the Subrosian Market and a cave to the Temple of Seasons. Its tower entrance sits behind lava, so cross the lava rivers with the Roc’s Feather. Spring then unlocks the rock flowers on Mt. Cucco. See the Strange Brothers, the Tower of Spring and Mt. Cucco.

The autumn power is the last of the four. The Tower of Autumn sits behind a lava stream, and its entrance is blocked by rubble that a Bomb Flower clears. Cross the lava with the Roc’s Feather and step into the tower to receive the power. See the Tower of Autumn and Eyeglass Lake.

Tree stumps you change the season at

You can only change the season while you stand on a stump, and a stump always gives the same season each time you use it. The list below covers the stumps the 100% route needs, with the season you set at each one.

Using the Rod at a stump

Stand on the stump and swing the Rod. The screen flashes and the new season takes over the whole area, including the water, the plants and the paths. A stump always gives the same season each time you use it, so you can return to it whenever you need that season again.

Winter freezes shallow water so you can walk across it, and it piles snow into drifts you can climb or use as a bridge. Summer grows vines up cliffs and dries up shallow creeks, which can open a path to a lair. Spring bursts the rock flowers in bloom, which you can cut through with your sword. Autumn spreads red leaves over the ground, and a Shovel can clear the leaf piles.

Seed trees have their own seasons. The Gale Seed tree on the Sunken City island bears only in summer, so set summer there if you need Gale Seeds. See Mystical Seeds for every seed tree and its season.

Season order on the route

The Rod gives you one power per Spirit, and the powers appear in the order the walkthrough gives them: winter, summer, spring and then autumn. Your first season change is at the pond stump after the Tower of Winter, so you cannot choose a season before that. Each power opens a new part of Holodrum, so the route moves between the four seasons as the dungeons and rings require.
