Dampé’s Shack is the Switch remake’s dungeon builder. Dampé turns Chamber Stones and the rooms you clear in the story dungeons into chambers, you arrange them on a grid, then you walk the result as an Adventure. He sets 12 starter challenges that unlock as you clear dungeons. Finishing them pays 2 Pieces of Heart, a Secret Seashell, a Fairy Bottle and a Heart Container, and twelve more gold challenges pay 300 rupees each. The builder is optional, but those rewards are part of a 100% run.

How Dampé’s Shack unlocks

Find the shack

Dampé’s Shack sits on Tal Tal Heights, on the spot where the Camera Shop stood in the Game Boy Color version. Clear the Bottle Grotto first. The walkthrough passes it on the way to Tabahl Wasteland, as described in Mysterious Forest, Goponga Swamp and Bottle Grotto. After the Bottle Grotto he opens the first challenge, Dungeon Arranging 101.

New challenges per dungeon

Each later dungeon opens another challenge, so talk to Dampé again after every boss. The stage of the story at which each challenge appears is in the table below. After Turtle Rock the last starter challenge and its Heart Container are open, which is the point where Wind Fish’s Egg and the Final Bosses collects it.

The sources agree on the rewards for the 12 challenges and on the order of unlocks. Names vary slightly between guides (“Stair Decisions” is “Stairs Decisions” in some), and “Bombs Away!” loses its exclamation mark in some. Finish them in order and in the dungeon sequence listed above: rewards are paid per challenge, not per dungeon.

Fill Up Your Hearts: Piece of Heart and Secret Seashell

After Key Cavern, open Arrange Dungeon at the shack, build the Fill Up Your Hearts layout from the chambers you have, then enter the Adventure and clear it. The reward is a Piece of Heart and a Secret Seashell. This is the earliest Dampé prize and is described in Yarna Desert and Angler’s Tunnel.

Passageway Central: Piece of Heart

After Catfish’s Maw and the Treasure Vault challenge, Passageway Central pays another Piece of Heart.

Heart Shortage: Fairy Bottle

Heart Shortage, which opens after Stair Decisions, gives a Fairy Bottle. Read the Fairy Bottles guide for the other two bottles.

Ticking Clock: Heart Container

Ticking Clock opens after Turtle Rock and must be cleared within five minutes. The prize is a Heart Container, the +Wallmasters effect and a new chamber. The Heart Container is on top of the 32 Pieces of Heart, which is why the Piece of Heart guide mentions it.

Gold challenges

After the 12 starter challenges Dampé offers 12 gold challenges (Forging a Sword, Crafting a Shield, Bows > Swords, Dungeon Song, House of the Hinox, Back to Square One, Need a Hand?, Zig-Zaggy, Nothin’ but Stairs, Treasure Hoard, Skull Arrangement and The Supreme Shape). Each pays 300 rupees and nothing else.

How the Chamber Dungeon works

Chambers and effect panels

Chambers are copies of rooms from dungeons you have cleared. Bring Dampé a Chamber Stone and he turns it into a new chamber or an effect panel such as +Monsters, +Bombs, +Hearts, +Wallmasters or +Rupees. Shadow Link comes from scanning a Link amiibo, not from stones. Completed chamber dungeons can be saved to a Zelda amiibo and shared.

Arrange, then play

Select Arrange Dungeon, lay out your chambers on the grid, and then enter the Adventure. A dungeon needs at least as many treasure chests as locked doors (the Nightmare door counts). If the game will not accept your layout, press Y to see what to fix. Dampé supplies bombs and arrows before you start, so you do not need to stock up. Collect Small Keys from chests before you collect rupees. The rupees you pick up in a dungeon you built are yours to keep when you clear it.

Town Tool Shop

Seven stones are sold at the Town Tool Shop in Mabe Village for 1,280 rupees each. The shop adds them as you progress: one guide opens the first two after the Color Dungeon and the third after the Face Shrine, and the last four appear after Turtle Rock. The walkthrough chapters stock the first stone by the Face Shrine, so the timing of the early ones varies. A stone is expensive, so buy them only when your wallet allows. See Tal Tal Heights and Eagle’s Tower for the stone available then.

Trendy Game

The crane game gives one stone when you have collected all ten figures, after the ending (see Figures and the Trendy Game). Another stone is tied to Dampé’s challenges or to Catfish’s Maw depending on the guide; sources disagree and the trigger is unconfirmed, so check the crane game after those events.

Fishing Pond

Catching an Ol’ Baron at the Fishing Pond gives a stone. A second stone comes from a big Ol’ Baron at least 60 inches long. One guide lists a 140 cm fish as a possible second condition but marks it unconfirmed. Use the Heavyweight Lure.

Seashell Mansion

Take 30 Secret Seashells to the Seashell Mansion for a stone and all 50 for another; see Secret Seashells. The 50-shell stone is the last walkthrough pickup, collected in Western Tal Tal Mountains and Turtle Rock.

Rapids Race

Finish the Rapids Race in under 30 seconds. Details are in the Rapids Ride guide.

Tips

  • Do the starter challenges in unlock order and revisit Dampé after every boss.
  • The Heart Container needs all 12 starter challenges; the gold ones only pay rupees.
  • Do not rush the 1,280-rupee stones; they are optional and only make the builder bigger.
  • Fill Up Your Hearts is the first challenge that pays a Piece of Heart, so build it as soon as Key Cavern is done.
  • Press Y in the editor to see why a layout is rejected.
