The Smithy makes the Iron Shield, the first shield upgrade after the Wooden Shield. You need one Red Ore and one Blue Ore, which the Great Furnace fuses into Hard Ore, and then the Smithy’s master upgrades your shield when you answer his question with “Do whatever”. The same Smithy polishes the Rusty Bell into the Pirate’s Bell, which you return to the captain in Subrosia.

Red Ore, Blue Ore and Hard Ore

Find the Red Ore

Step through the portal in the winter region to reach Subrosia. Head east across the lava paths to the cliff-side cave that holds the Red Ore chest. Pull across the pits with the Magnetic Gloves, and the chest in the small room gives you the Red Ore.

Find the Blue Ore

Go west from the portal area. Jump the potholes with the Roc’s Feather, then pull across the next pits with the Magnetic Gloves set to north. One screen east of there is a chest with the Blue Ore.

Fuse the ores at the Great Furnace

Carry the Red Ore and the Blue Ore to the Great Furnace. Speak to the blue Subrosian with a band around his head at the back of the furnace room, and the two ores fuse into Hard Ore. The Tarm Ruins chapter covers this step in order.

Upgrading the shield

Take the Hard Ore and your Wooden Shield to the Smithy

Walk to the Subrosian Smithy on the long peninsula. Keep your Magnetic Gloves handy, because the route crosses several gaps. Bring the Hard Ore and the Wooden Shield together, since the master will not upgrade a shield without the ore.

Answer “Do whatever”

The master asks what you want. Answer “Do whatever” and he upgrades your Wooden Shield to the Iron Shield on the spot. The other answer insults him and does not upgrade the shield.

Polishing the Pirate’s Bell

Pirate's Bell

Take the Rusty Bell to the Smithy

Rusty Bell

The Rusty Bell comes from a cave under the quicksand in the Samasa Desert. The captain in the Subrosian pirate house refuses it because it is rusty, and he sends you to the Smithy for a polish.

Answer “Do it!”

Answer the smith’s question with the bold option, “Do it!”, and wait while he works. The bell comes back as the Pirate’s Bell. Return it to the captain, and he sails away. The full trade is in the Samasa Desert chapter.

Breaking the ore with a Bomb Flower

Carry the Bomb Flower to the smiths

A Bomb Flower lifted from a lava lake in Subrosia breaks the rock that blocks the Tower of Autumn. Take it to the smiths near the Smithy, who break the ore in one blast. The Tower of Autumn chapter has the full route.

Where to go next

The Subrosia guide covers the portals and the Temple of Seasons, and the Subrosian Market sells the Ore Chunks you may need for the rest of the route.
