RewardsWooden Shield and Wooden Sword (Impa), L-1 Ring Box and Friendship Ring (Vasu), 1 Gasha Seed, the Shovel, Piece of Heart 1 of 12; 1 soft soil spot and a shooting gallery to know about

This opening chapter takes you from the very first screen of a Linked Game to the moment you can dig. You meet Impa and Nayru in the Forest of Time, watch Veran steal Nayru, collect a Ring Box in Lynna City, hear the Maku Tree beg for help, follow a time portal into the past and take the Shovel from the Black Tower builders. The shortest route is: help Impa, walk south to Lynna City, visit Vasu, climb the Maku Path, step through the portal, grab the Gasha Seed in Lynna Village and finish at the Black Tower.

Forest of Time: Impa, Nayru and Veran (present)

Start the game and help Impa

Begin in the present, in the Forest of Time. In a Linked Game you start with four hearts, no rupees and nothing in your item slots. Impa is calling for help here, so talk to her and agree to look around the glades with her.

Follow Impa through the grassy clearings. At one point she asks you to shift a rock that is in her way, so push it aside, then continue north. Talk to the animals in the clearing beyond it; they gather around Nayru, the Oracle of Ages, who is singing to them.

Veran takes Nayru

Nayru warns that something terrible is about to happen, and the forest turns dark blue as Veran, the Sorceress of Shadows, takes over her body. Veran then opens a time portal and escapes into the past with Nayru. The portal stays on this screen, in the upper left, and you use it later in this chapter. Nothing in this scene can be missed or changed, so just let it play.

Wooden Shield and Wooden Sword from Impa

Impa recovers and tells you that Nayru must be saved. Because this is a Linked Game, she hands you a Wooden Shield, which goes into your B slot. Wikibooks credits her with the Wooden Sword as well, and you have it equipped by the time you leave the forest. In an unlinked game you start with no gear at all. Once both items are on your item screen, put the sword on B and the shield on A, which suits the cutting and digging ahead.Impa then tells you to go to the Maku Tree in Lynna City and walks off toward Nayru’s house to the east.

Lynna City and Vasu’s Jewelers (present)

Walk to Lynna City

Leave the forest to the south, cutting through the bushes with your sword, and enter Lynna City. A shop stands near the entrance; you have no rupees yet, so walk past it and follow the dirt roads.

Ring Box L-1 and the Friendship Ring

Go north from the shop and enter the jeweler’s, Vasu Jewelers. Vasu notices you have no Ring Box and gives you an L-1 Ring Box, which holds one ring at a time. He also gives you a Magic Ring to appraise, so choose Appraise from his menu: the ring turns into the Friendship Ring, which does nothing but is the first entry in your ring list. Come back to Vasu whenever you find an unidentified ring, because rings only work after he has appraised them. See Magic Rings for the full list.

Maku Path and the Maku Tree (present)

Climb the Maku Path

Continue north through Lynna City past a sign for the Maku Tree. The path ends at a gate marked Maku Path, so walk in. The first rooms contain blue and red switch blocks and the key counter at the top of the screen starts at zero; head north through each room until you find the stairs.

Talk to the Maku Tree

Climb the stairs to reach the Maku Tree’s grounds. The Tree tells you that Veran has taken Nayru and is trying to change history in the past. Before she finishes, she cries out that she is vanishing, and you are pushed back out into the open.

Time portal to Lynna Village (present to past)

Step through the portal

You reappear in the Forest of Time, at the swirling blue portal Veran opened. Impa waits beside it and explains that it is Veran’s doing and that it leads to the past, where you can stop her and save the Maku Tree. Walk into the portal. This is the first of the time portals; it is already open, so you do not need any song yet. You arrive in Lynna Village, 400 years earlier.

Lynna Village (past, 400 years ago)

Cut the flowers for your first rupees

Look around the village square and slash the flower bushes with your sword. Cutting them drops rupees and gets you up to about six, enough to try the shooting gallery later. Talk to the villagers as you go: they say the whole village is being dug up for the Black Tower, and that you will not get far here without a Shovel.

The small gallery house on the main street is the village’s minigame. Each try costs 10 rupees, and the prizes depend on your score after ten pitches: 350 points or more wins a Magic Ring, 250 to 349 a Gasha Seed, 150 to 249 gives 30 rupees, 50 to 149 gives a Heart, and below 50 gives nothing. You do not need to play yet, so answer No and leave. For tips, see Minigames.

Lynna Village shop

Next door, a second shop shows three wares at 100 rupees each, which is far more than you have. Wikibooks says this shop is only open in the Game Boy Advance version, where it sells a Magic Ring, the GBA Time Ring and a Gasha Seed. On the Game Boy Color you can ignore it, so move on.

Gasha Seed from the man across the river

Cross the river bridge and look for a small outhouse; the man inside asks you for paper, and you have none to give. Continue to the house just past it. The man inside complains about his stash of seeds and gives you a Gasha Seed, telling you to plant it in soft soil. Wikibooks places a soft soil patch behind the outhouse building, so once you own the Shovel, dig there and plant the seed. After a while the tree grows a Gasha Nut; harvesting it gives a Magic Ring, or rarely a Piece of Heart. The Gasha Seeds page explains how often to come back and check.

Black Tower and the Shovel (past)

Walk to the Black Tower

Follow the road south through the village to the construction site. Guards at Queen Ambi’s palace turn you away, so keep going to the tower, which is still being built on a hill. Workers with pickaxes fill the grounds and you can hear them grumbling that Ambi is driving them hard and that the guards will punish them if the work slows.

Get the Shovel

Walk through the work area, keeping to the left of the path, until you reach the man reading near the holes in the ground. Talk to him and mention digging: he is delighted and hands you the Shovel, which goes into your A slot. Use it on loose earth and on the piles of rubble to clear a way, and on soft soil to plant Gasha Seeds. See Items and Equipment for what else it does.

Dig out the first Heart Piece

Go back out to the front of the tower, the courtyard where a heart floats behind a ridge of rubble. Use the Shovel to dig through the stones and walk up to take your first Piece of Heart. Your item screen now shows 1 of 4 pieces; every four pieces make one more heart container. The full list is on the Heart Piece Locations page. Next you can dig your way through the rubble to the Maku Path in Lynna Village, which starts the next chapter.
