RewardsRupee profit on each sale (up to a 200 rupee Gold Rupee), then the Mask of Truth and free loans of the other masks; the quest is named Happy Mask Shopkeeper

The Happy Mask Shopkeeper lends you one mask at a time. You wear it, sell it to someone who wants it, and bring back the mask’s going rate. You keep whatever the buyer pays above that rate and cover any shortfall yourself. Four masks go out in this order: Keaton Mask, Skull Mask, Spooky Mask and Bunny Hood. After you sell the Bunny Hood and pay for it, the shopkeeper hands over the Mask of Truth. A loan costs nothing up front, and you settle with the shop on your next visit.

The Happy Mask Shop

Happy Mask Shop

The shop is a striped tent in Hyrule Castle Town with a big face above its green door. It opens only during the daytime, so if the door is shut, play the Sun’s Song on the stage near the shop to swap night for day. The shopkeeper explains the rules on your first visit: check a mask out, sell it to someone who wants it, then return and pay its going rate. The guard at the Kakariko Village gate is the one who asks you to look in on the new shop, so the errand starts once you have passed him.

Later visits give you a menu with “I’d like to browse”, “The Mask of Truth?” and “I’m all set. Bye!” Only one mask can be checked out at a time, and choosing a second asks whether you want to swap. A mask you are wearing needs to be equipped from the Equipment screen before a buyer notices it. See Shops and Prices for the other stores, and Lost Woods and Sacred Grove for the first three masks in route order.

The masks, in order

Keaton Mask

Keaton Mask

Choose the Keaton Mask on your first visit. The card says it is based on a Keaton, which kids adore, and that it goes for 10 rupees. Equip it from the Equipment screen and leave the shop with the debt open.

Sell it to the guard in Kakariko Village. He says his kid keeps pestering him for this popular mask and, when he sees you wearing it, asks whether you would sell it. Say yes and he pays 15 rupees, then wears the mask himself. You owe the shop 10, so you make 5 rupees.

Skull Mask

Skull Mask

Return to the shop, pay the 10 rupees for the Keaton Mask and take the Skull Mask. Its card describes a skeletal horned mask that makes you look tough, and the going rate is 20 rupees.

The Skull Kid in the Lost Woods, sitting beside the stream, wants it. He says he would look tougher wearing your mask and asks you to hand it over. He pays only 10 rupees, so you lose 10 against the shop’s 20.

Spooky Mask

Spooky Mask

Go back to the shop and pay 20 rupees for the Skull Mask. The Spooky Mask is next. Its card says to wear it and haunt everyone you meet, and its going rate is 30 rupees. Equip it before you set out.

The boy in the Graveyard who plays gravekeeper wants it. Walk through Kakariko Village to the Graveyard gate and, if he is not around, change the hour with the Sun’s Song. He is thrilled with the mask. Choose “Here you go” and he pays 50 rupees, which is 20 more than the going rate.

Bunny Hood

Bunny Hood

Visit the shop in daylight and pay the 30 rupees for the Spooky Mask. Pick the Bunny Hood. Its going rate is 50 rupees, and you wear it out of the shop.

Leave Hyrule Castle Town through the gate and follow the paved road across Hyrule Field to the Running Man. He spots your rabbit ears and begs for them, saying price is no object. Sell the Bunny Hood and he hands over a Gold Rupee worth 200 rupees, so you gain 150 over the shop’s rate once you repay it.

Mask of Truth

Mask of Truth

Return to the shop and the shopkeeper asks for the 50 rupees for the Bunny Hood. That was the last mask to sell, so he rewards you from his special reserve: “You checked out the Mask of Truth!” He says it lets you see the truth of another person’s heart, which is both convenient and terrifying. From now on you may borrow whichever mask will bring you happiness. The Happy Mask Shopkeeper quest in the Threads of Time then reads complete.

Wear the Mask of Truth and talk to everyone you meet. In the market, one townsperson daydreams about borrowing a funny mask from the shop, and an old man says he is looking for a damsel who brews the ultimate potion. Neither gives an item. In the Lost Woods, wearing the Mask of Truth, talk to the lone Deku Scrub beside the stump in the clearing. It remarks that the youngsters say you have a frightening face, begs you to spare it and gives you a Deku-nut bag that holds up to 40 nuts. The last child errands list the full route.
