Child Side Quests
Malon’s Friend
The quest begins in the paddock at Lon Lon Ranch by day. Malon is waiting in the grass, and after you meet her the New Event banner for Malon’s Friend appears. Her friend is a young horse named Epona who hides from strangers, and her entry in Threads of Time says a certain song puts the horse at ease.

Show Malon your ocarina and she asks you to accompany her. Copy the notes she shows on the staff: X, Y, A, X, Y, A. Play them back for “You played Epona’s Song!” and again with Malon for “You learned Epona’s Song!” Epona trots over and lets you stand beside her. Later the song calls her to you in Hyrule Field and at the ranch.

Before you leave, wake Talon in the ranch house. He asks you to find his three loose Cuccos in 30 seconds and pays you with a bottle of Lon Lon Milk, which is your second Empty Bottle. The game has its own entry under Find Talon’s Cuccos.

The quest finishes as an adult. Ingo has taken over the ranch and charges 20 rupees to ride. Skip his horses, play Epona’s Song, and race Ingo twice. The second win gives you Epona, and Ingo locks the gate behind you, so jump it. Ingo Ranch and Epona has the full scene. After the Shadow Medallion you can return to the ranch and beat Malon’s lap course on Epona for a prize that she sends to your house.

Epona’s Song and the cows
Epona’s Song also persuades the cows in Hyrule to share their milk, as long as you carry an Empty Bottle. A cow waits in a hidden grotto on Death Mountain Trail, reached with bombs at night, and another stands in the cow barn in Kakariko Village. A Gerudo woman keeps Li’l Miss Moo by the waterfall pasture of Gerudo Valley, and a cow stands in a pen inside a cave off the canyon at the edge of Hyrule Field. As an adult you can also find a cow in the hut in Kokiri Forest. Each one gives a bottle of Lon Lon Milk that restores a few hearts.

Happy Mask Shopkeeper
The Happy Mask Shop in Hyrule Castle Town opens a quest called Happy Mask Shopkeeper. The shopkeeper explains the rules: you check a mask out for nothing, sell it to someone who wants it, then return to the shop and pay its going rate. The buyer sets the price, so a mask can earn or lose you money. The guard at the Death Mountain Trail gate also asks you to look in on the shop while you are in town.

The first mask is the Keaton Mask, going rate 10 rupees. Equip it and the guard at the stairs to Death Mountain buys it for 15 rupees, so you earn 5. Back at the shop you pay the 10 rupees you owe and check out the Skull Mask, going rate 20 rupees. Sell it to the Skull Kid by the stream in the Lost Woods, who pays only 10 rupees, a loss of 10.

Pay the 20 rupees for the Skull Mask and check out the Spooky Mask, going rate 30 rupees. The boy in the Graveyard, who plays gravekeeper, pays 50 rupees for it, which is 20 more than the shop’s rate. Return to the shop and pay the 30. If it is night when you arrive, the shopkeeper says the shop opens only in the daytime, so play the Sun’s Song first.

The shopkeeper then lends you the Bunny Hood. Wear it and the Running Man on the road outside Hyrule Castle Town begs for it, saying price is no object. Sell it and he hands over a Gold Rupee worth 200. Back at the shop you owe 50 rupees for the hat. That was the last mask to sell, so the shopkeeper lends you the Mask of Truth (“You checked out the Mask of Truth!”) and tells you to wear it and talk to everyone. Every mask in the chain is explained on Happy Mask Shop: Every Mask and How to Get It.

To the Great Fairy
After Darunia hands over the Goron Ruby outside Dodongo Cavern, the New Event banner “To the Great Fairy” appears. He tells you the Great Fairy is at the top of Death Mountain. The summit is the long way round, so pass through Goron City first, climb the Death Mountain Trail and take the long net up the rock face to the summit. Death Mountain Summit and Crater covers the route.

A lit stone corridor leads to the fountain. Stand on the Triforce symbol in front of the golden structure and play Zelda’s Lullaby. The Great Fairy of Magic asks for an offering of 25 rupees, and you choose “Make an offering.” She calls down purple magic and gives you Din’s Fire, and the green magic meter appears under your hearts. She adds that her sister near Hyrule Castle will teach you a sword technique. Great Fairy Fountains lists all six fountains.

Broken Windmill, Dry Well
The quest is listed as “Broken Windmill, Dry Well” and concerns the Music Man’s windmill in Kakariko Village and the well in the village square. The Music Man grumbles that the windmill would be fine if a kid with an ocarina had not played a weird song and brewed a storm. The well has a signboard reading “Dark! Narrow! Scary! Well of Three Features”, and you cannot enter it yet.

Learn the Song of Storms from the Music Man as an adult (L, R, X, L, R, X), as described in Kakariko and the Hookshot. Later, return the Master Sword at the Temple of Time to become a child again, walk back to Kakariko Village and climb to the windmill. Play the Song of Storms for the Music Man. Rain falls, the windmill spins and the well in the square drains.

Walk to the well and a villager says you can see the bottom of it now, with what looks like a tunnel down there. Climb down into the Bottom of the Well, where the Lenses of Truth wait. The dungeon is in Bottom of the Well, and the draining of the well is the last scene of Nocturne of Shadow.

Scarecrow and Pocket Egg Quests
Stir the Scarecrow’s Soul!
As a child, visit Lake Hylia and walk from the Lakeside Laboratory to the field with the scarecrow on the cliff side. The scarecrow introduces himself as Bonooru and asks you to play something soulful. The New Event banner “Stir the Scarecrow’s Soul!” appears. Talk to him again, open the staff, play a short tune of your own and confirm it. He praises it and repeats it. Play a second tune the same way. A note reading “A soul-shaking song…” joins the quest, and a second scarecrow stands a little further along the field.

The tune you make is the one you need later. As an adult, ride Epona to the scarecrow field and talk to Bonooru. He remembers you, asks you to play the song you taught him and calls out that he wants to join you. The second scarecrow, Pierre, thanks you for the soul-shaking melody and says to play the Scarecrow Song whenever you see straw dancing in the wind. The game now lists the Scarecrow Song on your song wheel.

Play the Scarecrow Song near a Hookshot or Longshot target and a scarecrow rises and calls “Come on!” so that you can pull yourself up to it. It reaches Gold Skulltula #52 in Dodongo Cavern, #82 in the Shadow Temple and #95 in the Spirit Temple, helps you cross lava ledges in the Fire Temple, and gets you to Heart Piece #30 on a chest ledge in Gerudo Fortress. See Gold Skulltula Locations and Heart Piece Locations.

From a Pocket Egg Comes…
As an adult, talk to the Cucco Lady beside her pen in Kakariko Village at night. She lends you a pocket egg and the quest banner “From a Pocket Egg Comes…” appears. She says it hatches at dawn, and her hint is to find a heavy sleeper and let the Cucco’s crow wake him. Look for the man asleep in a house, play the Sun’s Song to pass the night, and a Pocket Cucco hatches. Carry it to the sleeper, who turns out to be Talon.

Return the bird to the Cucco Lady and she trades Cojiro for it, a blue Cucco that belonged to her brother. The Master Craftsman’s Son in the Lost Woods takes Cojiro and gives you an Odd Mushroom with a 4:00 timer. Granny’s Potion Shop in Kakariko turns it into an Odd Poultice, and Fado in the Lost Woods swaps that for a Poacher’s Saw.

The Master Craftsman in Gerudo Valley gives you a Broken Goron Sword for the saw, after you agree to help with his missing apprentices. He is how Missing in the Desert begins. Biggoron, at the top of Death Mountain Trail, turns the sword into a Prescription. King Zora gives an Eyeball Frog with a 2:30 timer, and the Lake Scientist in the Lakeside Laboratory makes specialty eye drops with a 3:30 timer.

Take the drops to Biggoron for the Biggoron Receipt, then wait a few days by playing the Sun’s Song and talking to him until the repair is done. The receipt buys the Biggoron Sword, which takes both hands and cannot be used with a shield. You also need 200 rupees for the Giant’s Knife from Medigoron in Goron City, which Biggoron takes at the end. The full route is in The Biggoron Sword Route and the trade list in Biggoron Sword: Every Trade in the Sequence.

Story quests that are not side quests
The Threads of Time tab also tracks the main story, so the list is longer than the six side quests above. The story quests are Link Wakes Up, The Great Deku Tree, Princess of Hyrule Castle, Three Spiritual Stones, Spiritual Stone of Fire, Spiritual Stone of Water, Awakening the Five Sages, Forest Temple Mysteries, Disaster in Goron City, Disaster in Zora Domain, Creature of Darkness, Missing in the Desert and Light and Darkness. The walkthrough chapters cover each of them in order.
