Age of Calamity throws most of the Breath of the Wild monster roster at you, from Bokoblins and Chuchus up to Lynels and Taluses. Most families come in colour tiers and elemental versions that follow the same pattern: the colour or prefix tells you how much health they have, the element tells you which rod to reach for. Giant foes and bosses are covered on Bosses.

Reading an enemy

A Blue Moblin stands beside a furnace in Akkala Tower, its name bar across the top of the screen

Colour tiers

Bokoblins, Moblins, Lizalfos, Hinoxes and Lynels climb through Blue, Black and Silver versions, each tougher than the last. Cursed Bokoblins and Cursed Lizalfos are dark, corrupted versions, and the Stal skeleton versions (Stalkoblin, Stalmoblin, Stalizalfos, Stalnox) are their undead cousins.

An Electric Wizzrobe, named over its health bar, fights in a lightning storm on the battlefield

Elemental versions

Fire, Ice and Electric versions exist for Chuchus, Keese, Moblins, Lizalfos, Lynels, Hinoxes, Guardians and Wizzrobes. Use the opposite rod: Ice Rod on fire enemies, Fire Rod on ice enemies. The Lightning Rod is best against enemies standing in water or next to metal crates, and a rod of an enemy’s own element is only resisted. Kill Wizzrobes whenever you can, because they refill your rod meters.

A Malice Guardian, named over its health bar, looms over the Great Plateau battle

Malice enemies

Malice versions of Guardians, Hinoxes, Lynels and Taluses (and Moblins in the Expansion Pass) have more health and longer Weak-Point Gauges than their normal forms. They show up in the later battles such as All Hyrule, United.

Common enemies

Bokoblins

Bokoblins

Bokoblins are the basic monsters. Blue, Black and Silver Bokoblins have more health, while Cursed Bokoblins and Stalkoblins are special versions. Monster Strongholds, where they gather in large numbers, are destroyed with Remote Bombs.

Moblins

Moblins

Moblins are large, powerful foes that hit hard and drop weapons. Blue, Black and Silver Moblins are tougher tiers, and Fire, Ice and Electric Moblins carry an element. Use the opposite element rod to break their gauges.

Lizalfos

Lizalfos

Lizalfos come in standard colour tiers, Cursed, Stalizalfos, and elemental forms that breathe fire or ice or carry lightning. Match the element with the opposite rod.

Chuchus

Chuchus

Chuchus are small jelly enemies in Fire, Ice and Electric forms. The Expansion Pass adds Giant Chuchus in all four forms.

The Stasis prompt reads R plus X as Link faces an Ice Wizzrobe in the grass

Keese

Keese are flying bats in normal, Fire, Ice and Electric versions. Use the opposite element rod on the elemental ones.

Octoroks

Octoroks come as Forest, Rock, Sky, Snow and Treasure versions. Treasure Octoroks are the loot-carrying version.

Pebblits

Stone, Igneo and Frost Pebblits are the small relatives of the Taluses.

A Fire Wizzrobe, named over its health bar, stands among red monsters on the Hyrule Field plain

Wizzrobes

Fire, Ice and Electric Wizzrobes are the key enemies for your rods: defeating them refills the matching rod meter, and on the map, an icon shows which Wizzrobes refill which rod. A Remote Bomb counters them. The Expansion Pass adds Blizzrobe, Meteo Wizzrobe and Thunder Wizzrobe. You get the Fire Rod, Ice Rod and Lightning Rod from the first Wizzrobe of each element in the early battles.

The first Zora Captain is rescued during the Zora's Domain battle, with the rescue counter at 1 of 4

Soldiers and captains

Hylian, Zora, Goron, Rito and Gerudo soldiers fight as regular troops, along with Yiga Footsoldiers. Each race also has a Captain, a powerful foe with a Weak-Point Gauge.

Large enemies

Lynels

Lynels

Lynels are boss-sized fighters in Lynel, Blue-Maned, White-Maned, Silver, Fire, Ice, Electric and Malice versions. Counter fire breath with a Remote Bomb, the charge with Cryonis, and stun them with a Special Attack. Details are on the Bosses page.

Hinoxes

Hinoxes

Hinoxes include the Blue, Black, Fire, Ice, Electric and Malice versions and the skeleton Stalnox. Stasis, Magnesis and Cryonis counter their big attacks. After one falls, a treasure chest with a weapon may appear.

A Flurry Rush prompt with the Y button appears over an Igneo Talus while Daruk speaks

Taluses

Stone, Stone (Luminous), Stone (Rare), Igneo, Frost, Malice Igneo and Malice Frost Taluses have arms you can destroy with Remote Bombs and, on the Igneo Talus, an ore deposit on the back as a weak point. Igneo Taluses are fire enemies, so use the Ice Rod on them.

Guardians

Guardians

Guardian Scouts, Skywatchers, Turrets and the Fire, Ice, Electric and Malice versions fire beams after a telegraph. Dodge the beam, and use Stasis when a prompt shows. Guardians are one of the main sources of weapon drops, with Moblins and Lynels.

Vicious Monsters (Expansion Pass)

The Battle-Tested Guardian spins white energy rings in a green-lit chamber, its name shown over the health bar

The eleven Vicious Monsters

The Expansion Pass adds Vicious Monsters, tougher versions of existing foes fought in EX Vicious Monster Battles. The eleven types are Battle-Tested Guardian, Blizzrobe, Thunder Wizzrobe, Meteo Wizzrobe, Fire Chuchu, Electric Chuchu, Ice Chuchu, Silver Lynel, Black Hinox, Silver Moblin and Stone Talus. A later wave adds four more EX Vicious Monster Battles.

How to unlock them

Finish the Royal Ancient Lab quest Roll Out the Research, then take The Menace of Vicious Monsters, which needs Bokoblin, Moblin, Chuchu and Wizzrobe Trophies (500 Bokoblin, 20 Moblin, 30 Chuchu and 10 Wizzrobe Trophies). Up to three Vicious Monsters appear on the map at a time, and defeating one gives a Vicious Monster Report. See the Expansion Pass page for the rest of the content.
