Heart Containers and Pieces of Heart

A Heart Container adds one heart to the health meter of the warrior who collects it. Each scenario has exactly one, and most lie in a chest under a boulder that needs a bomb, so carry bombs every time. Check the warrior before you open the chest, because each item is meant for one warrior only.

A Piece of Heart is a quarter of a heart. Capture the marked keep and a treasure chest appears; only the named warrior can open it. When you pick one up, a message tells you to collect four pieces to increase your maximum hearts by one, and four pieces collected by one warrior turn into another full heart for that warrior. All 32 scenarios carry a Heart Container and a Piece of Heart, Cia’s Tale included.

Many chests belong to a warrior who is not your starting choice or who only becomes playable in that scenario, such as King Daphnes in Reclaiming the Darkness. After you clear a scenario you can replay it from Free Mode, so pick the named warrior then. See the characters page for how every warrior unlocks.

Play as Link. Carry bombs to the northwesternmost outpost on the map and blow up the boulder beside it. The chest with the Heart Container is under the rock.

Play as Link. Capture West Rockface Keep during the Guard Troop side mission. A chest with the Piece of Heart appears once the keep is yours.

Play as Impa. Carry bombs, find the boulder near the cave exit, blow it up and open the chest beneath it. Only Impa can open this chest.

Play as Link. Capture the Crystal Cave Keep. A chest appears and holds the Piece of Heart.

Play as Sheik. Follow the path south of the Southeast Tree to its end, bomb the boulder and open the chest underneath.

Play as Impa. Capture the North Square and switch to Impa to open the chest that appears there.

Play as Lana. Find the boulder west of the West Ruins, bomb it and open the chest it covered.

Play as Sheik. Capture the Ruins Summit in the north. The chest with the Piece of Heart appears after the capture, so make the capture as Sheik.

Play as Link. Look beneath a rock southeast of the Academy Keep, just before the bridge to Town Center Keep, and bomb it to open the chest.

Play as Link. Capture N. Rockface Keep, which comes up as a side mission. The chest appears once the keep is yours.

Play as Fi. Look beneath the boulder between the Temple Entrance and the East Temple Keep.

Play as Link. Capture the West Keep to open the chest.

Play as Sheik. Follow the southern path from the East Boulder Keep and bomb the boulder along it to open the chest.

Play as Impa. Capture the East Goron Keep in the north-east of the mountain. A chest with the Piece of Heart appears.

Play as Darunia. After the floodgates are open, bomb the boulder in the eastern part of the Central Hall.

Play as Sheik. Visit the East Room inside the temple to take the Piece of Heart.

Play as Lana. Use the Hookshot to climb a ledge southwest of the Outskirts Keep. The Hookshot comes from The Shadow King, so return afterwards.

Play as Lana. Fight into the Sorceress’s Keep and capture it. A chest in its courtyard holds the Piece of Heart.

Play as Midna. Bomb the boulder on the east side of the Enemy Base to uncover the chest.

Play as Lana. Capture the West Palace keep. A chest holding the Piece of Heart appears.

Play as Zelda. Bomb the boulder in the south part of the map near the Town Entrance and open the chest behind it.

Play as Lana. Capture the keep in the northern temple hall (N. Temple Hall) to make the chest appear.

Play as Impa. Bomb the boulder on the path leading south from the SE Magic Keep.

Play as Fi. Capture the South Garden Keep after Ganondorf arrives. A chest with the Piece of Heart appears.

Play as Link. Bomb the boulder northwest of the East Ruins Room.

Play as Midna. Capture the East Ruins Room keep to make the Piece of Heart appear.

Play as Ganondorf. Bomb the boulder west of the North Oasis.

Play as Ganondorf. Capture the Clifftop Keep. A chest appears there; open it to get the Piece of Heart.

Play as Ganondorf. Bomb the boulder at the Fairy Fountain Keep.

Play as Ganondorf. Capture the Western Room keep to make the Piece of Heart appear.

Play as Ganondorf. Search the southwestern part of the field between the Castle Keep and the Abandoned Fort and break the rock that hides the chest.

Play as Ganondorf. Go to the Abandoned Fort and capture it, then open the chest there to receive the Piece of Heart.

Play as Link. Break the boulder south of the Clifftop Keep.

Play as Lana. Go to the Central Keep and capture it to open the chest with the Piece of Heart. Replay the scenario with Lana once it is cleared.

Play as Zelda. Break the boulder in the Mountain Keep and open the chest it covered.

Play as Impa. Go to the W. Rockface Keep and capture it to receive the Piece of Heart.

Play as Cia. Head far to the west, past the North Square Keep, and bomb the boulder there.

Play as Cia. Capture the Central Keep in the south of the map. The game hints that treasure may be located there; open the chest that appears. If the Gorons take the keep from you, win it back first.

Play as Wizzro. Go east of the Hyrule Castle Keep, just past the empty room, and bomb the boulder.

Play as Volga. Take the Piece of Heart at the Fairy Fountain.

Play as Wizzro. Go north of the West Palace and bomb the boulder there.

Play as Cia. Open the chest in the West Palace to receive the Piece of Heart.

Play as Volga. Break the boulder just west of the Rogue Base.

Play as Cia. Capture the Fairy Fountain Keep to take the Piece of Heart.

Play as Volga. Bomb the boulder at the Fairy Fountain Keep.

Play as Cia. Capture the East Temple Keep to take the Piece of Heart.

Play as Linkle. Look in the recess just west of the South Square Keep.

Play as Linkle. Reach the North Square Keep once the Gatekeeper is down. A chest appears there with the Piece of Heart.

Play as Ruto. Go to the area east of Cliffside Keep, where the Heart Container sits. If you did not switch to Ruto in time, replay the scenario with her.

Play as Linkle. Capture Lakeside Keep. Capturing it gives you the Piece of Heart.

Play as Fi. Break the boulder west of the Hall of Time.

Play as Linkle. Capture the East Temple Keep. The chest there holds the Piece of Heart, and the same keep gives the Hylian Crossbows as a sealed weapon.

Play as Twili Midna. Break the boulder just north of Southwest Square. The Heart Container is beneath it.

Play as Linkle. Capture Upper Level East and open the chest that appears.

Play as Impa. Once the game announces that you can play as Impa, switch to her and go to the W. Rockface Keep. The Heart Container is under a boulder to the northwest of that keep.

Play as Linkle. Capture the West Field Keep. The Piece of Heart is there in a chest that the game announces with a Chest sighted banner.

Play as Tetra. Enter the tunnel north of Star Island Keep and bomb the boulder.

Play as Link. Capture Star Island Keep to claim the Piece of Heart.

Play as Tetra. Check the alcove west of North Oasis Keep and break the boulder there.

Play as Lana. Capture S. Desert Keep to take the Piece of Heart.

Play as Tetra. Break the boulder north of the East Magic Keep.

Play as King Daphnes. Go to the West Magic Keep. He is unlocked by clearing this scenario, so return in a replay.

Play as King Daphnes. Break the boulder southwest of the Allied Base.

Play as Link. Go to Faces Keep, where the Piece of Heart appears.
