How the story battles work
The story is a list of chapters on the Hyrule map. Clearing a battle opens the next one, and it also opens new quests and challenges on the map, so it pays to stop after each battle and spend your materials. The recommended level is a guide only: you can clear a battle below it, or drop the difficulty to get through a hard fight.
Each warrior joins your roster in the battle shown in the unlock column below. The Korok Seeds column counts the Koroks hiding in that battle, and the Korok Seed Locations page gives every hiding place.
Challenges and quests open as you progress. The first challenge, Mastering Remote Bombs, appears after the opening battle, and each Champion battle adds that Champion’s training challenge and quests. The Challenges and Quests pages name what each battle opens, and the 100% Completion Checklist lists everything in one place.
Chapter 1: Hyrule Field and the Ancient Lab
Chapter 1 is a short opening: you defend Hyrule Field as Link, gain Impa, then escort Zelda through the Breach of Demise. Together the two battles teach the combat basics and the first four Sheikah Slate runes (Remote Bomb, Cryonis, Magnesis and Stasis).
- The Battle of Hyrule Field: Capture the outposts, beat the Moblins, unlock Impa, find all 7 Korok Seeds and claim the rewards.
- Road to the Ancient Lab: Escape the corrupted Guardian, activate both Unearthed Guardians, unlock Zelda and find 6 Korok Seeds.
Chapter 2: The Champions and the Yiga Raid
After Road to the Ancient Lab, four battles open at once and you can play them in any order: Mipha, Daruk, Revali and Urbosa. Each ends by making that Champion playable. Clearing all four opens The Yiga Clan Attacks!, which closes the chapter.
- Mipha, the Zora Princess: Rescue the Zora Captains, beat the Lynel at Ploymus Mountain, pilot Vah Ruta, and unlock Mipha.
- Daruk, the Goron Hero: Capture the outposts, beat the Igneo Talus, climb Death Mountain, ride Vah Rudania, and unlock Daruk.
- Revali, the Rito Warrior: Fight to Rito Village, beat the Rito Captains, win the Revali boss duel and collect all 8 Korok Seeds.
- Urbosa, the Gerudo Chief: Enter Gerudo Town, beat the Yiga Blademasters, lure the Molduga, defeat Master Kohga, find 9 Koroks.
- The Yiga Clan Attacks!: Hold the village, call for help at the garrison, beat the Hinox and Sooga, and find all 8 Korok Seeds.
Chapter 3: Korok Forest and the Road Home
Chapter 3 begins with Freeing Korok Forest, the battle that gives you Hestu and the Master Sword, and ends with The Road Home, Besieged, where you fight as Link alone.
- Freeing Korok Forest: Clear the forest with Vah Medoh, guide Hestu, beat the Hollows and Astor, and find all 10 Korok Seeds.
- The Road Home, Besieged: Reach the southwest marker in 25 minutes, aid two captains, beat the Stone Taluses, find 3 Korok Seeds.
Chapter 4: Akkala, the Yiga Hideout and the Spring
The Yiga Clan is the enemy through most of Chapter 4. The three battles follow in order: Akkala Tower, Destroy the Yiga Clan! and When Courage Fails.
- Akkala Tower: Beat the Yiga Blademasters, light the ancient furnaces, retake the citadel from Sooga, and find all 5 Korok Seeds.
- Destroy the Yiga Clan!: Pilot Vah Naboris, storm the hideout, rescue the scouts and beat Sooga and Master Kohga.
- When Courage Fails: Defend the Spring of Courage, escort Zelda, topple trees with Remote Bombs and beat the Blue Hinox.
Chapter 5: Calamity Ganon Awakens
Calamity Strikes opens Chapter 5, and clearing it unlocks both Water and Fire and Air and Lightning, which you can take in either order. Between them they add four warriors: Sidon, Yunobo, Riju and Teba.
- Calamity Strikes: Escape Hyrule Castle, beat the Guardians and White-Maned Lynel, find all 7 Korok Seeds and see what unlocks.
- Water and Fire: Clear the Malice swamp, beat Waterblight and Fireblight Ganon, find 3 Korok Seeds and unlock Sidon and Yunobo.
- Air and Lightning: Rescue Urbosa and Revali, beat Thunderblight and Windblight Ganon, fly Vah Medoh, unlock Riju and Teba.
Chapter 6: Akkala Citadel and Fort Hateno
Chapter 6 has two battles with a Divine Beast stage each: Relentless as a Waterfall, where Vah Ruta crosses to the citadel, and Each Step Like Thunder, where Vah Naboris clears the desert before the fight at Fort Hateno.
- Relentless as a Waterfall: Pilot Vah Ruta to Akkala Citadel, heal captains, rescue Robbie, hold the bridge and play as Daruk.
- Each Step Like Thunder: The Vah Naboris 30,000 KO race, Fort Hateno defence, Purah escort, four Korok Seeds, Master Kohga.
Chapter 7: The Plateau and the Final Battle
The last chapter is a run of three battles: The Great Plateau, All Hyrule, United and The Future of Hyrule. Clearing the last one rolls the ending and opens the post-game.
- The Great Plateau: Rescue the Hylian Army, Hinox and Silver Lynel fights, Shrine of Resurrection, seven Korok Seeds, King Rhoam.
- All Hyrule, United: Capture the outposts, break the Wall of Malice, survive two Blood Moons and beat the Malice Lynel.
- The Future of Hyrule: Fight through Hyrule Castle, the Blight Ganons, Astor, Harbinger Ganon and Calamity Ganon.
EX chapter: Guardian of Remembrance (Expansion Pass)
The EX chapter comes with Wave 2 of the Expansion Pass and starts with EX To Zelda’s Side at Lv 40; its eight battles run to Lv 58. After the first, four battles at Lv 44 can be played in any order, then EX The Princess and the King, EX The Yiga Clan’s Retreat and the last battle, EX Guardian of Remembrance. They unlock two warriors, Sooga and Purah & Robbie. Wave 1 is separate: it opens the Royal Ancient Lab from the map icon in Central Hyrule.
- EX To Zelda’s Side: Guide Terrako to Zelda, beat the White-Maned Lynel and Harbinger Ganon, and clear the Memory Quests.
- EX Battle of Goponga Village: Rescue the Zora Captains, beat the Fire Lynel and Electric Hinox, and clear the Memory Quests.
- EX Battle for Kakariko Village: Defend the village as Yunobo, beat Sooga and finish all three Memory Quests.
- EX Searching Hyrule Forest: Find Tulin, escort him through the Lost Woods and beat the Fire Lynel.
- EX Liberate the Ancient Lab: Lead Urbosa and Riju through the Breach of Demise, beat Master Kohga and clear every Memory Quest.
- EX The Princess and the King: Protect the Hylian Captains on Lanayru Road, block the monsters and beat the Malice Guardian.
- EX The Yiga Clan’s Retreat: Escort Master Kohga and Sooga, beat all four Blight Ganons, clear all memory quests, unlock Sooga.
- EX Guardian of Remembrance: Beat Mutated Ganon and Astor, guard the furnace, clear the Memory Quests, unlock Purah and Robbie.
Story totals
The 20 story battles hold 122 Korok Seeds in all. Chapter 2 has the most battles (five, with 37 Koroks between them) and Freeing Korok Forest is the richest single battle with 10. After the last story battle the post-game opens, including the quest Terrako’s Return, which leads to the secret ending.
Once a battle is open the order matters little: clear the story first, then work through the quests and challenges, since many of them need warriors or materials that only later battles provide.
