Ten dungeons hold a Dungeon Map and a Compass, five temples hold a Boss Key, and 41 small keys are scattered across the keyed dungeons and the Gerudo Fortress, and this page lists each dungeon’s full set. A Map shows the floor you stand on and lets you switch floors on the Map screen. A Compass shows chests and hidden secrets on that map. A small key opens one locked door and is used up. A Boss Key opens the door to the boss chamber and stays in your pocket until you reach it.

Dungeons with no keys

Great Deku Tree

The Great Deku Tree has a Dungeon Map and a Compass, no small keys and no Boss Key. Climb the leafy vine wall on the first floor, follow the ledge and open the large chest for the Map, which lists the floors as 3F, 2F, 1F, B1 and B2. The Compass is in the chest on the far ledge of 3F, just past the first Gold Skulltula. The walkthrough for the Great Deku Tree has the whole route.

Dodongo Cavern

Dodongo Cavern holds a Map and a Compass but no keys. Carry bomb flowers to blast open the cracked walls on the first floor, and open the chest in the chamber behind the next cracked wall for the Map. The Compass is in the chest at the end of the room of horned Armos statues, past the green-stone door. The Dodongo Cavern chapter shows the order.

Lord Jabu-Jabu’s Belly

Lord Jabu-Jabu’s Belly has a Map and a Compass but no keys, so Ruto is the only thing you carry. Follow the stone path on B1 and dive through the blue water to the chest beside the next shell pad for the Map, which shows 2F, 1F and B1. The Compass is in a chest after the tentacle barriers, close to the round door where Ruto waits. See Lord Jabu-Jabu’s Belly.

Ice Cavern

The Ice Cavern has a Map and a Compass, no keys and no Boss Key. Melt the pink ice in front of the wooden chest with Blue Fire to take the Dungeon Map. Follow the hammer path to its end for the Compass, then melt the next pink wall to reach the White Wolfos. The route is in the Ice Cavern walkthrough.

Bottom of the Well

Bottom of the Well

The Bottom of the Well has a Map, a Compass and two small keys, and no Boss Key. The Map is in the chest at the end of the green passage on B2. You find the Lenses of Truth after Dead Hand, and then wear them to find the rest. The Compass is in a hidden room, one small key is in a candlelit niche lined with skull decorations, and the second is behind a slab in the wall recess of the coffin hall. Both keys are used before you leave, on a locked door and a chained door. See Bottom of the Well.

Temples with a Boss Key

Forest Temple

The Forest Temple holds a Map, a Compass, five small keys and a Boss Key. The first key waits on a ledge at the end of the mossy tunnel above the vine wall. The second is in a chest that appears after the Stalfos fight, and the third is in a stone room with a ladder back to the courtyard. The Map is in the arched alcove at the far end of the courtyard. The Boss Key is in the large chest in a small red room on 3F, beyond the grated door and the green glass door, and it opens the chained door on B2. The Compass comes from the chest that appears after the Blue Poe, the fourth key from a chest in a pool of light in the stone room after the purple room, and the fifth from the chest beside a torch in the Red Poe’s room. The Forest Temple chapter covers each door.

Fire Temple

The Fire Temple holds a Map, a Compass, seven small keys and a Boss Key, and most of the keys sit with the Gorons you free. A chest beside the first Goron’s cell holds one, the chests in the second and third Gorons’ cells hold one each, a chest in a room lit by a beam from above holds another, and the sixth Goron’s chest on 2F, the platform with the seventh Goron and the chest beside the eighth Goron hold the other three. The Compass is in a chest in the lit room on 3F, and the Map is in a larger chest past the red crystals and the round lava door. The Boss Key is in the ornate green and gold chest in the ninth Goron’s cell. Read the Fire Temple chapter for the Goron order.

Water Temple

The Water Temple holds a Map, a Compass, four small keys and a Boss Key. The Map is in a chest in a hall with blue glowing walls, reached with the Hookshot targets and Dash. The Compass is in a gold-decorated room at the end of a long pillared hall. The first small key appears after you defeat the Spikes, the second comes from a gold-barred alcove past a Bomb wall, the third from a chest in an amber-lit room and the fourth from behind an eye-shaped door on 2F. The Boss Key is in a gold room beyond a teal door. See the Water Temple walkthrough.

Shadow Temple

The Shadow Temple holds a Map, a Compass, five small keys and a Boss Key. The Map is in a chest on a stone pad in the pot and torch room on B1. The Compass is in a gold chest at the end of the skeleton corridor behind a Sheikah eye door. Small keys are in a side room chest that you reach with the Hammer and the Longshot, on a platform beyond a gate on B3, on the round stone floor below the skull balcony (throw a Bomb from the balcony first), in a chest under a stone arch, and on a pad past the sunlit gate room on B4. The Boss Key is in the large blue and gold chest beyond the hall of fire. See the Shadow Temple chapter.

Spirit Temple

The Spirit Temple holds a Spirit Temple Map, a Compass, five small keys and a Boss Key, with two keys in the child half and three in the adult half. As a child, one key is in the chest between two braziers and a second is in a barred room. The Map is in an ornate chest in the fountain hall. As an adult, play Zelda’s Lullaby on the Triforce rug to reach the Compass. Further keys are in a carpeted room guarded by a spiked plant, near the stone hand, and on a table in the light shaft hall. The Boss Key is in the ornate chest with the red cushion. See Spirit Temple.

Training grounds, the castle and the Fortress

Gerudo Proving Grounds

The Gerudo Proving Grounds hold eight small keys and no Map, Compass or Boss Key. You pick up the first after the Stalfos arena and the others in hammer, bow and Longshot rooms, across the Song of Time blocks, in the Zora Tunic pool and in the chest in the long corridor. The eighth key is in the chest after the Lizalfos fight. Each chained door in the final passage takes one key, and the Ice Arrow waits behind the last. See Gerudo Proving Grounds.

Ganondorf’s Castle

Ganondorf’s Castle has one small key and one Boss Key. The key is in a chest in the Light trial, behind the room with the blue and red rupees, and it opens the locked door in the room with the checkered floor. The Boss Key is in a chest that appears in the tower after the second Iron Knuckle drops, and it opens the boss door. There is no Map or Compass. See Ganondorf’s Castle and Ganondorf and Ganon.

Gerudo Fortress

The Gerudo Fortress gives four small keys, one for each captive carpenter. Defeat the Gerudo swordswoman each time you meet her, and a key drops. Open the matching cell to free Shiro, Saburo, Ichiro and Jiro. These keys work only inside the Fortress, and there is no Map, Compass or Boss Key. The Gerudo Fortress chapter covers the route.
