Gossip Stones

Stones listed5 Gossip Stones: 1 in the ruins of Hyrule Castle Town, 2 in the Sacred Grove, 2 in the Death Mountain Crater cave
You needThe Mask of Truth from the Happy Mask Shop, worn when you talk to a stone
What you getA rumor or a tip; no items from the stones themselves
Look forA grey stone with a glowing blue eye, usually with a chest or a path nearby

Gossip Stones are grey, egg-shaped stones carved with a glowing blue eye. Put on the Mask of Truth, walk up to a stone and press Check, and it whispers a rumor in a box with a purple border: a hint, a warning or a bit of gossip. Some stones close with “So? What do you think? Was that helpful?” You earn the Mask of Truth by finishing the Happy Mask Shop’s first chain of masks, so the stones belong to the late child quests and the adult game. See Happy Mask Shop: Every Mask for the trade sequence.

How to read them

Mask of Truth

Mask of Truth

After you sell the last mask in the Happy Mask Shop chain, the shopkeeper hands you the Mask of Truth with “You checked out the Mask of Truth!” and tells you to wear it and talk to everyone you meet. Equip it before you approach a stone. Every stone in this list was read with the mask on, and its box has a purple border and an eye crest. The shop steps are in Errands Before the Temple of Time.

Hyrule Castle Town as an adult

Ruined town stone

As you leave the Temple of Time for the ruined streets under the dark red sky, a blue Gossip Stone stands in the open after your first fights. Talk to it and it says “Allow me to let you in on a little secret.” It then gives two rumors. The first says some suggest vision-enhancing lenses should be banned at the Treasure-Chest Shop in Hyrule Castle Town, which points at the Lenses of Truth and the Treasure Box Shop. The second says playing certain combinations of musical notes to gossip stones can produce some marvelous results, and ends with “Well, that’s the rumor, anyway…” The game does not say which notes. See Temple of Time.

Sacred Grove stones

First Grove stone

Leave the warp platform in the Sacred Grove, follow the forest trail to the large blue door and play the Song of Time on the flower pad to open it. In the clearing beyond stands the first Gossip Stone, with a wooden chest beside it. Navi comments “That was weird!” as you arrive. With the Mask of Truth on, the stone says “There are whispers that if you hold out a Deku stick and slowly approach a nearby butterfly, you may get a surprise.” The chest beside it holds a Business Scrub Seed, covered on Business Scrubs.

Second Grove stone

Follow the trail on past the chest to a second stone. It says “Despite appearances, it seems Saria is often lonely.” It then asks “So? What do you think? Was that helpful?” Navi remarks that the markings on the stones look like eyes. Climb the stairs and fire the Hookshot at the glowing target above the stone gateway to reach the path to the Forest Temple. See Sacred Grove as an Adult.

Death Mountain Crater cave stones

First crater stone

After you leave the fountain hall of the Great Fairy of Wisdom, climb past the red mesh gate and hit the boulder in the cave beyond with the Megaton Hammer. A Gossip Stone stands beside the next break in the rock. It says “There’s word of a sword that’s even more powerful than the giant’s knives produced by Medigoron.” It leads into the Biggoron sword trades, which are in The Biggoron Sword Route and Biggoron Sword: Every Trade.

Second crater stone

Keep smashing the boulders along the lava cave, using the leaf pad checkpoint, until you reach a second stone. It says “I’ve heard you should keep flames away from stones like me! Who knows what could happen!” Hammer on through the lava cave until daylight shows and the Death Mountain Trail banner appears. See Double Magic and Death Mountain.

What the rumors lead to

Rumors that matter

Two rumors lead somewhere. The Medigoron rumor leads to the Biggoron sword route, and the lens rumor points at the Treasure Box Shop, where you need the Lenses of Truth to find the chests. The butterfly tip, the flame warning and the note rumor give no reward, so treat them as extra lore.
