Hyrule Warriors has two kinds of enemy: troops you cut down by the hundred, and Captains, which are tougher fighters that hold keeps and lead units. Troops die to any combo. Most Captains have a Weak Point Gauge that opens after a powerful attack of their own, after a hit from the right item, or after you dodge behind them. Open it, empty it and the Weak Point Smash ends the fight quickly. Captains also drop the bronze and silver materials you need for badges and weapons, so they are worth hunting on purpose. Giant bosses and named villains have their own page, the Boss Guide.

How Captains work
Captains guard keeps and outposts as Keep Bosses and Outpost Captains, lead groups of unit troops and appear as regular fighters on the field. An allied Captain who is about to fall calls for help; touch the Rescue Area circle around him to heal him fully. Enemy Captains are named in the battlefield information of each scenario. The tough ones open for a few seconds after their strongest attack, and the Weak Point Gauge appears above them. If the gauge does not appear, use the item named in the entries below or dodge behind them. Materials come in bronze, silver and gold tiers, and the entries list what each type may drop. Open the materials page for what to do with them and the items page for the sub-weapons used below.

Foot soldiers
Bokoblin
Bokoblins are the weak red infantry of the Dark Forces. They come as ordinary sword carriers, archers, summoners in skull masks who call reinforcements, and Bokoblin Captains with helmets and shields. Kill the summoners first so the crowd does not refill, and use area attacks on the rest. Bokoblin Captains occasionally drop Old Rags. In The Armies of Ruin a group of them drops boulders in front of the Mine Entrance.

Bulblin
Bulblins are club-wielding grunts with archers in small groups. Their Captains look like King Bulblin and guard keeps and outposts. They fall to any combo and occasionally drop a Metal Plate. They fill the ranks in scenarios such as The Sorceress of the Woods and Ganondorf’s Return.

Stalchild
Stalchildren are skeletal infantry. Helmeted ones with broken armor hold occupied keeps, purple-hooded summoners call more, and their Captains look like Stalfos. Defeat the summoners quickly. Captains occasionally drop a bronze Monster Tooth. See The Sheikah Tribesman for the first fights against them.

Miniblin
Miniblins are the grunts of the Wind Waker scenarios, in the Forsaken Fortress and the Wind and Earth Temples. Miniblin artillery throws axes, and the taller armored Miniblin Captains lead them. They die to ordinary combos.

Chuchu
Red, Green and Yellow Chuchus ignore ordinary attacks and swing their head around after deflecting them. A Hammer hit defeats them outright, a Hammer shockwave stuns them so normal attacks work, and a Special Attack also kills them. They drop items by colour: Red drops Hearts, Green a Magic Jar and Yellow a Force Fragment. The Hammer comes from A New Disturbance, where they first appear.

Ghost Soldier
Ghost Soldiers, with Captain and Summoner variants, swarm the ruins in The Sacred Sword, where Wizzro controls them. They keep arriving around the statues, so return to the statue you protect between other tasks.

Hylian Soldiers and Gorons
Hylian Soldiers and Hylian Captains are usually on your side. Gorons and Goron Captains are your allies in The Armies of Ruin and The Sheikah Tribesman, where the Goron Captain runs Bombchus, but they become enemies in Land of Myth. Protect allied Captains and heal them in their Rescue Area circle.

Captains
Moblin and Shield Moblin
Moblins are tough Captains with spears. The wooden-shield version is simply called Moblin and the iron-shield version Shield Moblin, but both behave the same. They thrust the spear like a javelin, jump at you, or spin furiously before tumbling to the ground. The fall sends a shock wave that interrupts anything you are doing, so dodge out of range, but the fall also leaves them open and shows their Weak Point Gauge. Attack right after the landing. A Shield Moblin guards the Clifftop Keep in Enduring Resolve.

Lizalfos
Lizalfos hop from side to side and use blades and gauntlets to attack and defend. They slam you with their tail or breathe fire as fireballs or a stream. While a stream is burning their Weak Point Gauge is exposed, and they are weak to Bombs. They may drop Lizalfos Scales (bronze) or Lizalfos Gauntlets (silver). A Lizalfos leads the Monster Forces in the Gerudo Desert in Ganondorf’s Return.

Dinolfos
Dinolfos follow the same pattern as Lizalfos, with sword attacks, fireballs and fire streams, but are stronger and more aggressive. They are also weak to Bombs and open when they breathe a stream. They may drop Dinolfos Fangs (bronze) or Dinolfos Arm Guards (silver).

Lizalfos Chieftain and Dinolfos Chieftain
The Chieftains are much larger and stronger versions of the two lizard Captains and serve Volga. They arrive as reinforcements in Land in the Sky, where the objective is to defeat the Lizalfos and Dinolfos Chieftains, in The Dragon of the Caves and in most other scenarios that feature Volga, including Powers Collide. Wear each one down with strong attacks and use Focus Spirit on the crowd around them, then deal with the Weak Point Gauge as you would for a normal Lizalfos.
Darknut
Darknuts are armored sword Captains with two ways to open their gauge. In the first their eyes glow red before a big upward sword thrust; if you stand close and guard when the eyes glow, your guard breaks, so stay back or dodge. In the second they ready their sword, draw a longsword and launch quick strikes: hit them with the Boomerang then and they slash at their own allies before the gauge opens. Dodging behind a Darknut also exposes the gauge. Darknuts may drop a Piece of Darknut Armor and, occasionally, a Large Darknut Sword, and they are hurt by the VS Undead skill.

Stalmaster
Stalmasters are four-armed skeleton Captains that fight like Darknuts. Their eyes glow red before a lunge, and the lunge leaves them open. Throw the Boomerang while they charge their flurry, or dodge behind them, to expose the gauge. They may drop Stalmaster Wrist Bones or Stalmaster’s Skulls.

Gibdo
Gibdos drag a heavy sword and swing it slowly but with great force. When surrounded they let out a shriek that stuns everything nearby, and they aim a controlled shriek at a warrior who stands in their line of sight, which exposes their gauge. Their other attack is a glowing poison miasma; while they charge it, shoot them with the Bow, which opens the gauge and makes them spin and damage their own allies. They may drop Gibdo Bandages or Heavy Gibdo Swords.

Big Poe
Big Poes swing a lantern and spit dark magic from it, which opens their Weak Point Gauge. They dodge by vanishing and reappearing nearby, so attack while they are reappearing. Icy Big Poes are a stronger variety. The Spirit of the Caves in The Sheikah Tribesman is a special Big Poe guarding a tunnel gate, and two Big Poes in Land of Myth control Darunia. In Adventure Mode the Hylian Ghost is a named variant: if a hurt Hylian Captain falls it returns as a Hylian Ghost and curses your army, so beat it to end the curses. Big Poes may drop Big Poe Necklaces (bronze) or Big Poe’s Lanterns (silver).

Aeralfos and Fiery Aeralfos
Aeralfos fly close to the ground and swoop at you, breathe a ring of fire before landing briefly and stab the ground for a small shock wave. The Weak Point Gauge opens whenever they land. While one is flying you can Hookshot its shield to pull yourself up and strike it in midair, which also opens the gauge, and a Hookshot used during its fire shock wave counts as an extra-effective hit. Fiery Aeralfos are red with blue wings. They may drop Aeralfos Leather (bronze) or a Round Aeralfos Shield (silver). Aeralfos Gatekeepers guard the temple in The Sacred Sword.

Big Blin
Big Blins are heavy Bulblin Captains from the Wind Waker scenarios. They attack Windfall Island in A New Disturbance and man the Gate of Souls in The Search for Cia. Hit them with the Hammer while they charge up and they throw a tantrum, hurting their allies and opening the gauge. They may drop Big Blin Hides (bronze) or Big Blin Clubs (silver).

Obstacles and special enemies
Beamos
Beamos are stone statues with a red eye that stand guard in the ruins of the Valley of Seers in The Sorceress of the Valley and fire powerful beams once they spot you. The game announces when a Beamos begins attacking and warns that ordinary attacks are ineffective. Bombs destroy them, as do Special Attacks and attacks made during Focus Spirit, which break through their shield.

Deku Baba
Deku Babas are giant plants that block key paths and hurt anyone who gets close with a poison cloud. They pull into their roots if hit by anything but arrows, so use the Bow from a distance. Defeating one drops many Rupees. The Bow is first found in The Sorceress of the Woods.

Gold Skulltula
Gold Skulltulas are hidden enemies that show up on the minimap as a web icon once their condition is met; the game announces that one has appeared and later that it has fled if you wait too long. Defeating one drops Illustration Pieces; each scenario hides two, the second only on Hard or Hero difficulty. The scenario pages in the walkthrough give each condition.

Keep Saboteurs and special troops
Keep Saboteurs capture keeps quickly and appear as extra objectives in scenarios such as The Sorceress of the Woods and The Usurper King, so kill every one before the keeps they target fall. Other special roles in battle include Assault Troops, Item Thieves, Keep Reclaimers, Messengers, Lords of the Horde and Siege Captains, each named in the battle information. Deal with them as soon as they show up on the minimap.

King Bulblin and Captain Keeta
On the Twilight Map in Adventure Mode, King Bulblin joins your side once you bring him down to two thirds of his health. On the Termina Map, Captain Keeta stops attacking when brought to a third of his health and joins you in the same way.
