Challenges are the optional battles that sit beside the story on the Hyrule map. Each one is a self-contained fight with its own warrior restrictions, a recommended level and a one-time first-clear reward of materials. The game has close to 200 of them: warrior training fights, element trials, outpost and escort missions, boss gauntlets, Divine Beast battles and, with the Expansion Pass, the EX battles. This page explains how they open, groups them by type, gives the details for the ones worth planning around, and ends with a complete table for every level band.

How challenges open on the map

New challenge icons appear as you clear story battles, finish quests and clear other challenges, and some warriors and quests in turn depend on a particular challenge. The first clear pays out the listed materials once; replaying is allowed, but the reward is not repeated. Any challenge can be played on any difficulty, so a hard fight can be cleared on Easy to pick up the reward. The recommended level shown at the battle select is a guide, not a limit.

The game does not spell out the unlock condition of every challenge, but many are tied to a story chapter: the warrior trainings and rune lessons open early, the Fairy Fountain battles and Coliseum fights open around the middle of the story, and the boss gauntlets open late. The conditions that are known for certain are covered in the notable challenges section below, so check there before hunting for a missing icon.

Types of challenges

Warrior trainings

Most playable warriors have a challenge named after them, such as Daruk’s Training, Revali’s Training, Zelda’s Training or King Rhoam’s Training, which restricts you to that warrior and sets them against training opponents. These fights are a quick way to level a new warrior, and most of them pay out 1 Weapon on the first clear. Link has three weapon-type lessons (One-Handed Weapons, Two-Handed Weapons and Spears) and Zelda has Zelda’s Training: Bows. The character guide explains how each warrior joins your roster.

Rune lessons

Mastering Remote Bombs, Mastering Cryonis, Mastering Magnesis and Mastering Stasis are short fights at Lv. 4 to 13 that show how each Sheikah Slate rune works against enemies. Some of the rune upgrade quests depend on them, so clear them early.

Anti-element trainings

The Anti-Flame, Anti-Lightning and Anti-Ice trainings come in three steps (I, II and III) and then in mixed fights: Anti-Flame & Lightning Training, Anti-Ice & Lightning Training, Anti-Flame & Ice Training and the final Anti-Element Training at Lv. 50. They fill the map with elemental versions of monsters, from Fire Keese up to Fireblight, Thunderblight and Waterblight Ganon in the third steps, and are a good place to practise the elemental rods and weak points.

Outpost, defence and escort missions

Many challenges ask you to capture all the outposts (Innkeeper’s Request, Territorial Battle, Reclaim the Land), defend an allied stronghold (Defend the Sands!, Defend Akkala Citadel, Defend Hyrule Castle) or guide an ally to a marked position (Messenger’s Escort, The Royal Escort, King’s Escort, Prince’s Escort). Escorts are easiest if you clear the enemies ahead of the ally before it moves on.

Daily Drills and Coliseum

Daily Drills: Hyrule, Zora, Goron, Rito and Gerudo (Lv. 14 to 27) pit you against a trained army and its champion, and you cannot use that champion yourself. The Coliseum runs Beginner (Lv. 30), Intermediate (Lv. 40) and Expert (Lv. 56); the Expansion Pass adds EX Coliseum: Master (Lv. 84), which sends Calamity Ganon and Malice monsters against you.

Boss gauntlets

The late challenges are boss rushes: Blight Ganons Resurgent, Remnants of the Calamity, Harbingers of the Calamity, Defeating Destiny, Versus Astor, Versus Harbinger Ganon and Versus Calamity Ganon. They are covered in the notable challenges section.

Divine Beast battles

Twelve challenges put you in the pilot’s seat of Vah Ruta, Vah Rudania, Vah Medoh or Vah Naboris and form a mode of their own. Their controls, enemies and rewards have a dedicated Divine Beasts page, and their reward table is repeated near the end of this page.

Expansion Pass challenges

The 25 standard challenges whose names start with “EX” and the EX Alert battles are part of the Expansion Pass. See the Expansion Pass page for how the lab and the new warriors fit in. Their rewards are mostly ingredients, Rupees and the lab materials Guardian Claw, High-Yield Ancient Furnace and Robbie’s oils.

Notable challenges

Mastering Remote Bombs

This is the first challenge. It becomes available once you have cleared The Battle of Hyrule Field, recommends Lv. 4, allows any warrior and pits you against Fire Wizzrobes and Bokoblins. It pays 1 Ethereal Stone, 5 Ancient Screw and 5 Ancient Gear, which are among the materials the Remote Bomb upgrade quest asks for.

Hair-Width Trial series

Hair-Width Trial: Beginner (Lv. 15) opens after the first four Chapter 2 battles, which are Mipha, the Zora Princess, Daruk, the Goron Hero, Revali, the Rito Warrior and Urbosa, the Gerudo Chief. The trials are tests where one mistake is costly: the Beginner trial ends on a single hit and offers no healing items. The series continues with Intermediate (Lv. 29, against Yiga Blademasters and Footsoldiers), Expert (Lv. 54) and Expert+ (Lv. 57, with a Fire Lynel). Each pays a weapon, and Expert+ also gives Barbarian Leg Wraps.

Fairy Fountain challenges

Four Fairy Fountain challenges are needed to unlock the Great Fairies as a warrior. Grassy Plains (Lv. 25, Hyrule Field, boss Cotera), Deep Snows (Lv. 26, Tabantha Frontier, boss Kaysa) and Desert Sands (Lv. 28, Gerudo Desert, boss Tera) appear together once the quest “Offering Help on the Road” is complete. Battlefield (Lv. 29, Akkala Citadel, boss Mija) is the last one you must clear. You cannot use the Great Fairies in these fights. Each of the first three pays 1 Ethereal Stone and 3 Fairy, and Battlefield pays 1 Ethereal Stone, 5 Fairy and 5 Hearty Bass.

Trial of the Ancients

This duel against Monk Maz Koshia unlocks him as a playable warrior. It appears after you finish three quests, The Trial of Monsters, The Trial of Stones and The Trial of the Mighty Foe, which open after the story battle Destroy the Yiga Clan!. It is recommended at Lv. 38 and any warrior except Maz Koshia may be used. You have three minutes to defeat him. The reward is 1 Ethereal Stone, 2 Star Fragment, 1 Diamond and 1 Weapon, and clearing it opens a set of follow-up quests.

Versus Astor and Versus Harbinger Ganon

Both are single-boss rematches at Lv. 70 with any warrior. Versus Astor pays 1 Ethereal Stone, 3 Star Fragment, 1 Diamond, 500 Rupees and 1 Weapon; Versus Harbinger Ganon pays 1 Ethereal Stone, 5 Giant Ancient Core, 2 Diamond, 600 Rupees and 1 Weapon. Defeating Destiny (Lv. 65) is another Astor fight, with Hollows for company.

Versus Calamity Ganon

Clear Versus Astor and Versus Harbinger Ganon, and this boss rush unlocks. You fight Astor, Harbinger Ganon and Calamity Ganon in a row, recommended at Lv. 74, with any warrior. It pays 1 Ethereal Stone, 5 Diamond and 700 Rupees, and clearing it unlocks Calamity Ganon as a playable warrior. After that, The Siege of Fort Hateno (Lv. 78) becomes available, a battle where Calamity Ganon is joined by Harbinger Ganon, Astor, Malice Guardians and Guardian Scouts; it pays 1 Ethereal Stone, 5 Giant Ancient Core and 1 Weapon.

Terrako’s Training and A Royal Investigation

Terrako’s Training (Lv. 57) is a Terrako-only fight that opens after the quest “Terrako’s Return”, while A Royal Investigation (Lv. 61) is a Zelda-only challenge that gives 5 Terrako Component, which counts toward the 50 that quest asks for. Both belong to the period after the final story battle, The Future of Hyrule.

Hyrule’s Greatest Warrior

This Lv. 63 fight cannot be played with Link, Revali or Master Kohga, because they are your opponents. When the objective is reached Harbinger Ganon appears. It pays the Cap of the Wild, Tunic of the Wild and Trousers of the Wild, plus 1 Ethereal Stone and 1 Weapon.

Miss Vai Battle Pageant

A Lv. 65 pageant in which you defeat the contenders Impa, Urbosa, Riju, Mipha and Zelda one after another. Link, Revali, Sidon, Teba, Master Kohga, King Rhoam, Calamity Ganon, Sooga and Purah & Robbie cannot be used. The reward is the Gerudo Veil, Gerudo Top and Gerudo Sirwal, 1 Ethereal Stone and 1 Weapon.

Blight Ganon rematches

Harbingers of the Calamity (Lv. 64), Blight Ganons Resurgent (Lv. 67) and Remnants of the Calamity (Lv. 68) all send Waterblight, Fireblight, Windblight and Thunderblight Ganon after you. The first pays 700 Rupees and a weapon, Blight Ganons Resurgent pays 5 Diamond and a weapon, and Remnants pays a Star Fragment, Courser Bee Honey and a weapon. The Heart of the Calamity (Lv. 77) adds Harbinger Ganon and Calamity Ganon to the same four.

Escape the Lost Woods

You must escape the Lost Woods (recommended Lv. 35) rather than clear it. It opens during Chapter 4 and pays 1 Ethereal Stone, 5 Korok Seed and 10 Endura Carrot. Forest Octoroks and passages that look open on the map can keep you from the escape point, so stay on the marked route.

EX Alert: Forgotten Temple

This Expansion Pass battle against the Battle-Tested Guardian (Lv. 78, any warrior except the Battle-Tested Guardian) needs the quests “The Ultimate Relic” and “The Relic of Legend” first. Clearing it makes the quest of the same name appear, which unlocks the Guardian as a playable warrior. It pays 1 Diamond, 1 Giant Ancient Core, 1 Guardian Claw, 1 High-Yield Ancient Furnace and 1 Weapon.

EX Alert battles (Expansion Pass)

The eleven EX Alert battles are Vicious Monster fights with a single boss. Six of the first ones respawn and scale up: their recommended level rises after Calamity Strikes and again after The Future of Hyrule, so a cleared map can be farmed again later. Every battle is open to any warrior except Forgotten Temple, where the Battle-Tested Guardian cannot be used.
