Saturday Night Live put the Hero of Time beside Grand Theft Auto VI protagonist Jason Duval during its October 3 episode, turning November’s two high-profile game launches into an argument at the Weekend Update desk. Mikey Day played Link, while Marcello Hernández took on Jason in the episode hosted by Dakota Johnson.
Colin Jost introduced the matchup as gaming’s version of “Barbenheimer,” setting up a clash between Hyrule’s puzzle-solving hero and Rockstar’s criminal escapades. From there, the conversation quickly became a contest over whose game sounded more appealing.
Link Defends the Puzzles, Fairies, and Tunic
Jason’s pitch leaned on guns, stolen cars, and mayhem. Link countered with puzzles and the pleasures of adventuring through Hyrule, getting increasingly defensive as Jason mocked his outfit and game.
The sketch boiled Zelda down to “TMPNG,” short for “Too Many Puzzles, No Guns.” For anyone who has spent an evening figuring out a dungeon, that sounds like a perfectly reasonable selling point. The argument eventually involved competing props, with Jason brandishing a rocket launcher and Link producing a fairy bottle.
Day’s costume was a more specific nod to Zelda than much of the dialogue. His green tunic drew on Link’s appearance in the upcoming Ocarina of Time remake, complete with pointed ears and a blond wig. It gave fans something recognizable to appreciate between the jokes about his clothes.
The Performances Got Laughs, but the Jokes Divided Viewers
The response has been mixed. IGN’s coverage highlighted criticism of the familiar jokes about gamers, Link’s clothing, and Zelda’s puzzles. Some viewers felt the material could have been written years ago, despite the sketch being built around two upcoming releases.
Other reactions were warmer toward the performers. Vulture singled out Day’s increasingly emphatic Link and the way his delivery repeatedly made the others laugh. That difference helps explain the split: viewers could enjoy the cast struggling to keep straight faces while still finding the gaming references thin.
Zelda fans hardly need convincing that solving puzzles is fun. Watching Link desperately explain that appeal to someone holding a rocket launcher is the whole premise here.
Why Ocarina of Time and GTA 6 Are Sharing the Spotlight
Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake arrives on November 5, 2026, exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2. GTA VI is scheduled for November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, placing their launches two weeks apart.
That gives SNL a timely rivalry to play with, even though the games are coming to different consoles. For Zelda fans, the upcoming return to Hyrule now comes with the unusual sight of the Hero of Time defending his tunic on late-night television.
