Like Link, Zelda appears across different eras of Hyrule’s history. Most games introduce a new princess with her own family, personality and role in the kingdom. Some are scholars. Some are sages. One hides from Ganondorf as Sheik. Another grows up as the pirate captain Tetra. In Spirit Tracks, she spends much of the adventure as a disembodied spirit. Skyward Sword reveals an even deeper connection between Zelda and the goddess Hylia.
And after decades of helping Link save Hyrule, Echoes of Wisdom finally puts Zelda at the center of the adventure herself.
Nintendo describes Zelda as the main heroine of the series, a Hylian who carries sacred power and cares deeply for the people of Hyrule. It also explicitly notes that the different Zeldas are often separate individuals with different lives and memories.
Who Is Princess Zelda?

Princess Zelda is usually a member of Hyrule’s Royal Family and one of the central figures in the recurring struggle surrounding Link, Ganondorf and the Triforce.
She is traditionally associated with the Triforce of Wisdom, just as Link is associated with Courage and Ganondorf with Power. Nintendo describes those three figures as recurring chosen bearers of the three pieces of the Triforce.
That description only tells part of the story.
Zelda’s role changes dramatically between games. In the original The Legend of Zelda, she breaks the Triforce of Wisdom into eight pieces before Ganon can steal it. In Ocarina of Time, she spends seven years hiding in plain sight as Sheik. In The Wind Waker, she initially has no idea she is Zelda at all. In Breath of the Wild, her interest in archaeology and ancient technology is as important to her character as her royal blood.
She is occasionally the person Link needs to rescue, but reducing Zelda to that role misses most of what Nintendo has done with the character over the last four decades.

Origins and History

Zelda has been part of the series from the beginning.
In the original 1986 game, Ganon invades Hyrule and steals the Triforce of Power. Zelda responds by dividing the Triforce of Wisdom into eight fragments and hiding them throughout the kingdom before she is captured. She also sends Impa to find someone capable of defeating Ganon, setting Link’s first adventure in motion.
Even there, Zelda is doing more than waiting for rescue. The entire quest exists because she prevented Ganon from obtaining both pieces of the Triforce.
The sequel complicates the idea of “Princess Zelda” almost immediately. Zelda II: The Adventure of Link introduces another Zelda from the distant past, placed under an enchanted sleep after a tragedy involving the Triforce. This ancient princess is not simply the same woman rescued in the first game.
That became the pattern for the series.
Nintendo’s current character material makes the distinction explicit: the princesses share the Zelda name, but they are often different people with their own experiences and memories.
Zelda, Sheik, Tetra and Hylia
A few of Zelda’s identities cause more confusion than others.
Is Sheik Princess Zelda?

Yes.
In Ocarina of Time, Zelda escapes Ganondorf and spends the seven years of his rule disguised as Sheik, presenting herself as a survivor of the Sheikah.
Sheik repeatedly appears to guide adult Link and teach him songs needed to reach the temples. Nintendo’s character profile confirms that Sheik is Zelda hiding in plain sight from Ganondorf.
Sheik is therefore not another Zelda incarnation. Sheik is the Ocarina of Time Zelda using a disguise.
Is Tetra Princess Zelda?

Yes.
Tetra begins The Wind Waker as the headstrong captain of a pirate crew. She has no idea that she is part of Hyrule’s Royal Family until the King of Red Lions reveals her heritage.
From that point, the game identifies Tetra as Princess Zelda.
Her story continues into Phantom Hourglass, where Nintendo explicitly identifies Link as traveling with pirates led by Tetra only a few months after The Wind Waker.
Tetra remains Tetra, though. Becoming aware of her royal ancestry does not erase the personality or identity she grew up with.
Is Zelda the goddess Hylia?

The answer depends on which Zelda.
Skyward Sword takes place near the beginning of Nintendo’s official chronology and reveals that its Zelda is the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia. Nintendo’s timeline places the “Reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia” immediately around the events leading into Skyward Sword.
That does not mean every Zelda should simply be described as Hylia herself.
Later Zeldas inherit sacred power through Hyrule’s royal bloodline, but Skyward Sword’s Zelda has a much more direct identity as Hylia reborn.
She also isn’t technically a princess in that game. Nintendo’s developers specifically noted that Skyward Sword Zelda begins and ends the story as a normal girl from Skyloft rather than royalty.
Every Major Princess Zelda Incarnation
Just as there have been many heroes named Link, Hyrule’s history includes many different Princess Zeldas.
Most are separate members of Hyrule’s Royal Family living generations apart. They share a name and often inherit sacred power, but their personalities, relationships and roles can be radically different. One becomes Sheik, another grows up believing she is a pirate named Tetra, and another spends years researching ancient technology before the Great Calamity.
Here are the major incarnations of Zelda throughout the series.
Original Princess Zelda Character
Major Games: The Legend of Zelda
What Defines Her: The princess who starts the entire series. When Ganon invades Hyrule, Zelda breaks the Triforce of Wisdom into eight pieces and hides them before allowing herself to be captured.
Ancient Princess Zelda Character
Major Games: Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
What Defines Her: An ancient princess placed under an enchanted sleep after refusing to reveal the secrets of the Triforce. Link must obtain the Triforce of Courage to awaken her.
This is a different Zelda from the princess rescued in the original game.
A Link to the Past Zelda Character
Major Games: A Link to the Past
What Defines Her: A descendant of the Seven Sages who reaches Link telepathically from beneath Hyrule Castle. She later becomes one of the maidens Agahnim sends into the Dark World.
Ocarina of Time Zelda Character
Major Games: Ocarina of Time
What Defines Her: A young princess whose prophetic dreams warn her about Ganondorf. After Hyrule falls, she spends seven years hidden as the mysterious Sheik before revealing herself as the seventh Sage and bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom.
Oracle Zelda Character
Major Games: Oracle of Seasons, Oracle of Ages
What Defines Her: Hyrule’s princess during Link’s adventures in Holodrum and Labrynna. In a linked adventure, Twinrova targets Zelda as the final sacrifice needed to complete the attempted resurrection of Ganon.
Four Swords Zelda Character
Major Games: Four Swords
What Defines Her: A princess with the ability to sense trouble surrounding the Four Sword. She takes Link to inspect Vaati’s seal, only to be kidnapped when the wind sorcerer escapes. Nintendo places this adventure early in Hyrule’s official chronology.
Tetra / Princess Zelda Character
Major Games: The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass
What Defines Her: The fearless captain of a pirate crew who grows up unaware that she is descended from Hyrule’s Royal Family. Her true heritage is revealed beneath the Great Sea, but she never stops being the sharp-tongued, adventurous Tetra.
Phantom Hourglass continues her story only months after The Wind Waker.
Four Swords Adventures Zelda Character
Major Games: Four Swords Adventures
What Defines Her: A later Princess Zelda who senses darkness spreading across Hyrule and travels with Link and the six Shrine Maidens to investigate the Four Sword Sanctuary. Their disappearance sets another battle with Vaati in motion.
This Zelda belongs to a much later era than the princess from Four Swords. Nintendo places Four Swords Adventures after Twilight Princess on the Child Era branch.
Minish Cap Zelda Character
Major Games: The Minish Cap
What Defines Her: Link’s childhood friend as well as Hyrule’s princess. A trip to the Picori Festival ends with Vaati turning her to stone, sending Link on a journey to restore the Picori Blade and break the curse.
Twilight Princess Zelda Character
Major Games: Twilight Princess
What Defines Her: A solemn young ruler forced to surrender Hyrule when Zant’s forces invade. She later sacrifices her own power to save Midna and joins Link during the final confrontation with Ganondorf.
Unlike many earlier incarnations, this Zelda is introduced already carrying the responsibilities of ruling a kingdom.
Spirit Tracks Zelda Character
Major Games: Spirit Tracks
What Defines Her: The princess of New Hyrule who loses her body but not her ability to fight back. Her spirit accompanies Link throughout the adventure and can possess armored Phantoms to solve puzzles and battle enemies.
Nintendo’s official history specifically describes Zelda’s soul being separated from her stolen body before she sets out alongside Link.
Skyward Sword Zelda Character
Major Games: Skyward Sword
What Defines Her: Link’s childhood friend from Skyloft and the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia. Her journey reveals the origins of the sacred bloodline that will eventually become Hyrule’s Royal Family.
Despite the name commonly used for the character, this Zelda is not actually a princess during the events of the game. Hyrule’s kingdom has not yet been established at this point in Nintendo’s chronology.
A Link Between Worlds Zelda Character
Major Games: A Link Between Worlds
What Defines Her: The princess of Hyrule during Yuga’s invasion. After being transformed into a painting and taken to Lorule, she becomes central to the conflict between the two kingdoms and their very different relationships with the Triforce.
Her story also provides a deliberate contrast with Princess Hilda, Lorule’s own royal heir.
Wild-era Zelda Character
Major Games: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom
What Defines Her: A princess, scholar and researcher raised under enormous pressure to awaken the sacred sealing power of Hyrule’s Royal Family. Her story eventually stretches from the Great Calamity into the distant era of Hyrule’s founding.
In Breath of the Wild, she holds Calamity Ganon at bay for a century while Link recovers.
Tears of the Kingdom sends the same Zelda into Hyrule’s distant past, where she becomes involved with Rauru, Sonia and the original battle against Ganondorf before making an extraordinary sacrifice to restore the Master Sword.
Echoes of Wisdom Zelda Character
Major Games: Echoes of Wisdom
What Defines Her: The first Princess Zelda designed as the primary playable protagonist of a mainline Zelda adventure. After Link disappears into a mysterious rift, Zelda escapes imprisonment and sets out to save Hyrule herself using Tri and the Tri Rod.
Nintendo has said the development team chose Zelda because the game’s Echo system finally provided an adventure that felt appropriate for her rather than simply putting her into Link’s traditional role.
No Two Zeldas Are Quite the Same
The shared name can make it easy to think of Princess Zelda as one character repeatedly redesigned for each game, but the series usually treats these women as distinct people.
Some Zeldas are raised from childhood knowing exactly what Hyrule expects of them. Tetra doesn’t discover her royal heritage until she is already the captain of a pirate crew. The Zelda of Skyward Sword isn’t royalty at all. The Wild-era Zelda would rather study ancient technology than spend her days attempting to force a sacred power she cannot yet access.
Even their relationships with Link vary. They can be strangers brought together by a crisis, childhood friends, traveling partners, princess and knight, or two people who gradually learn to trust each other.
What connects them is less a single personality than a recurring role in Hyrule’s history: Zelda is repeatedly the person carrying its knowledge, royal legacy and sacred power into the next crisis.
Role in The Legend of Zelda Games
Not every Zelda game features Princess Zelda directly. Link’s Awakening, for example, takes place on Koholint Island without Zelda present, while Tri Force Heroes revolves around Princess Styla of Hytopia instead.
The Legend of Zelda

The first Princess Zelda establishes several ideas the series would keep returning to.
She possesses the Triforce of Wisdom. She understands Ganon’s intentions before the situation is completely lost. And when she realizes she cannot keep the Triforce safe, she splits it into eight fragments and hides them throughout Hyrule.
Only then does Ganon capture her.
Link’s quest is therefore partly an attempt to finish the plan Zelda already put into motion. He must recover the eight pieces, restore the Triforce of Wisdom and defeat Ganon.
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link

The title Zelda II refers to a very different Princess Zelda.
This Zelda lived in the distant past. After refusing to reveal information about the Triforce, she is cursed into an endless sleep. The tragedy becomes so significant that the royal family begins the tradition of naming its daughters Zelda.
Years later, Impa leads the original game’s Link to the sleeping princess. His search for the Triforce of Courage eventually gives him the power needed to awaken her. Nintendo’s official series history explicitly identifies her as a princess from a distant age.
This creates one of the strangest situations in the series: the Zelda rescued in the first game and the sleeping Zelda of Zelda II are two different princesses associated with the same era of Link’s life.
A Link to the Past

The Zelda of A Link to the Past has one of the series’ classic introductions.
On a stormy night, she reaches Link telepathically from the dungeon beneath Hyrule Castle. Link’s uncle leaves their home after hearing the same plea, and Link eventually follows.
The rescue doesn’t last.
Agahnim is capturing maidens descended from the Seven Sages, and Zelda becomes one of the people he sends into the Dark World. She later joins the other maidens in helping Link reach Ganon’s Tower.
The game strengthened one of Zelda’s recurring abilities: communicating magically across great distances.
Ocarina of Time

Ocarina of Time gives Zelda one of her most complicated roles.
As a child, she dreams of Ganondorf’s rise before the adults around her understand the danger. When Link reaches Hyrule Castle, she explains her suspicions and asks him to obtain the Spiritual Stones and protect the Triforce before Ganondorf can reach it. Nintendo’s official history describes their meeting as the beginning of their attempt to stop his plan.
They fail.
Ganondorf follows Link into the Sacred Realm and takes the Triforce of Power. Zelda escapes Hyrule Castle with Impa and disappears.
Seven years later, she returns as Sheik.
For much of the adult portion of the game, Zelda is standing directly in front of Link without revealing who she is. She guides him toward the awakened Sages and teaches him the melodies needed to reach the temples.
Once her identity is revealed, Zelda’s role changes again. She is the seventh Sage and bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom.
Nintendo’s 2026 Ocarina of Time remake expands this incarnation further with additional dialogue and fully voiced cutscenes. The remake launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on November 5, 2026.

The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass

Tetra doesn’t behave much like a traditional princess.
That is precisely why she works.
She is introduced as the confident young captain of a pirate crew and initially treats Link as an inconvenience. After Aryll is kidnapped, Tetra eventually helps Link reach the Forsaken Fortress and becomes increasingly involved in his fight against Ganondorf.
The discovery beneath the Great Sea changes everything.
Tetra learns that she carries part of the Triforce of Wisdom and is descended from the Royal Family of Hyrule. Her identity as Princess Zelda has survived even though the kingdom itself has disappeared beneath the ocean.
The reveal never turns her into a completely different person. She remains blunt, adventurous and independent.
Phantom Hourglass continues directly from The Wind Waker, with Tetra and her pirates searching for a new land.
The Minish Cap

This Zelda begins as Link’s childhood friend.
She arrives at Link’s home to invite him to Hyrule’s Picori Festival, where the two spend the day together before attending the sword-fighting tournament.
The winner, Vaati, has other plans.
When Vaati breaks the Picori Blade and releases the evil sealed inside its chest, Zelda attempts to stop him. He responds by turning her to stone.
Her curse becomes the immediate reason Link sets out to repair the sacred blade and find a way to restore her.
Nintendo’s official history specifically describes Zelda and Link as childhood friends in this incarnation.
Twilight Princess

The Zelda of Twilight Princess is considerably more reserved than many of her predecessors.
She is already carrying the burden of ruling Hyrule when Zant invades. Faced with the choice between surrender and the destruction of her people, Zelda lays down her sword.
That decision can make her seem passive at first, but her role grows considerably once Link and Midna become involved.
Most notably, Zelda gives her own life force to save the dying Midna. She later returns for the final battle against Ganondorf and fights alongside Link using the Bow of Light.
This Zelda’s story is less about discovering who she is and more about the cost of leadership. She begins the game making decisions for an entire kingdom rather than herself.

Spirit Tracks

Few versions of Zelda spend more actual time adventuring with Link.
When Chancellor Cole’s plan succeeds, Zelda’s spirit is separated from her body. Instead of disappearing from the plot, she becomes Link’s traveling companion.
Nintendo’s original manual describes her simply: after her body is stolen, her spirit joins Link on his quest.
That setup lets the game do something the series had rarely attempted. Zelda comments on events as they happen, argues with Link, reacts to danger and directly helps solve puzzles.
She can also possess Phantoms inside the Tower of Spirits, giving her physical abilities despite lacking her own body.
The developers deliberately wanted to put more focus on Zelda in this game. During development, the team decided that if Link was going to travel with a female partner, using Princess Zelda herself was much more interesting than inventing another princess. Iwata Asks
Skyward Sword

Skyward Sword rewrites what the name Zelda means to Hyrule.
This Zelda isn’t initially a princess at all.
She is a girl from Skyloft and Link’s childhood friend. Nintendo’s developers intentionally emphasized their closeness so that Link’s search for her would feel personal rather than simply another mission to rescue royalty.
After a storm carries her to the Surface, Zelda begins a journey of her own alongside Impa.
She eventually learns that she is the mortal reincarnation of the goddess Hylia.
That revelation makes her central to the earliest known struggle against Demise. Hylia abandoned her divine form as part of a plan that would ultimately give humanity the means to use the Triforce.
Zelda eventually seals herself inside a crystal to maintain the seal on Demise until Link can complete his part of the plan.
The game therefore gives the royal family’s sacred connection a much deeper origin. Nintendo’s official chronology places Hylia’s reincarnation at the beginning of the history that eventually leads to Hyrule.
A Link Between Worlds
The Zelda of A Link Between Worlds finds herself caught between two kingdoms.
Yuga begins capturing the descendants of the Seven Sages and turning them into paintings as part of his plan to revive Ganon. Zelda is eventually captured as well.
The larger story introduces Princess Hilda of Lorule, a royal counterpart whose kingdom lost its own Triforce.

That creates an unusual contrast. Zelda represents a Hyrule that still possesses the sacred artifact, while Hilda rules a kingdom devastated by the decision to destroy its own.
By the end of the game, Zelda and Link use the Triforce to make a wish not for themselves, but for Lorule.
Breath of the Wild

The Zelda of Breath of the Wild receives more personal development than almost any earlier incarnation.
She is the daughter of King Rhoam and the princess expected to awaken a sacred sealing power inherited through Hyrule’s royal bloodline.
The problem is that she cannot make it work.
Years of prayer and training produce nothing. At the same time, Zelda develops a fascination with ancient Sheikah technology and wants to study the Guardians and Divine Beasts being prepared for Calamity Ganon’s return.
Her father sees research as a distraction from her duty.
Link’s presence initially makes the situation worse. He has already drawn the Master Sword and appears to embody everything expected of him, while Zelda is painfully aware that her own power remains dormant.
Their relationship gradually changes as she gets to know him.
When the Calamity finally arrives, Zelda’s power awakens while she is protecting Link. She then goes to Hyrule Castle and holds Calamity Ganon in check for 100 years while Link recovers in the Shrine of Resurrection. Nintendo’s official series history specifically describes Zelda as suppressing Calamity Ganon throughout that century.
Her story isn’t really about discovering that she is powerful. It’s about spending most of her life being told what her power is supposed to look like, then finally awakening it on her own terms.

Tears of the Kingdom

This section contains major story spoilers for Tears of the Kingdom.
The same Zelda returns in Tears of the Kingdom.
After Calamity Ganon’s defeat, she becomes deeply involved in rebuilding Hyrule. She and Link eventually investigate the strange gloom beneath Hyrule Castle, where they discover the mummified Ganondorf.
The encounter sends Zelda into Hyrule’s distant past.
Nintendo’s newer Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment material explicitly describes her as a princess transported from the distant future into the era of Hyrule’s founding. There she meets King Rauru, Queen Sonia and Mineru and becomes directly involved in the Imprisoning War against Ganondorf.
Zelda also discovers that she possesses power over time, inherited through Sonia’s bloodline, alongside the sacred power associated with Hyrule’s royal family.
Her eventual solution to Link’s broken Master Sword is extreme even by Zelda standards.
Knowing that swallowing a Secret Stone can transform someone permanently into an immortal dragon, Zelda sacrifices her human form and becomes the Light Dragon. The Master Sword spends ages embedded in the dragon’s head, restored and strengthened by Zelda’s sacred power until Link can retrieve it in the present.
The transformation gives Tears of the Kingdom one of the most literal interpretations of Zelda sacrificing herself for Hyrule.
She isn’t sitting somewhere waiting for Link to find her.
She has been flying above him almost the entire time.

Echoes of Wisdom

After 38 years, Zelda finally gets the adventure named after her.
Echoes of Wisdom opens with the familiar setup reversed. Link defeats Ganon and frees Zelda, only to be swallowed by a mysterious rift moments later.
More rifts begin appearing throughout Hyrule, taking the king and other inhabitants with them.
Zelda escapes and sets out to solve the crisis herself. Nintendo described the game as the first mainline Zelda title built specifically around making Princess Zelda the protagonist, after years of players asking when they would finally be able to play as her.
Her adventure is deliberately not designed around simply giving her Link’s sword.
With the help of the fairy Tri, Zelda uses the Tri Rod to create echoes of objects and creatures she has encountered. Beds become bridges. Monsters become allies. Ordinary household objects turn into puzzle-solving tools.
The system fits Zelda surprisingly well. Link traditionally solves problems with weapons and physical tools. Zelda’s signature mechanic rewards observation, experimentation and creativity.
Nintendo sums up the premise neatly: with Link missing, it is Zelda’s turn to save Hyrule.
Powers and Abilities
There is no single powerset shared by every Princess Zelda.
Different incarnations possess different abilities, but several themes return frequently.
Sacred Power Power
Many Zeldas inherit sacred power through Hyrule’s royal bloodline. Its exact function changes between games. It can create barriers, repel evil, seal Ganon or empower attacks. The Breath of the Wild Zelda spends most of her life attempting to awaken this ability before finally unleashing it during the Great Calamity.
Triforce of Wisdom Power
Zelda is traditionally associated with the Triforce of Wisdom. In Ocarina of Time, the Triforce splits when Ganondorf touches it, leaving Zelda with Wisdom, Link with Courage and Ganondorf with Power. Nintendo still uses this trio when explaining the three pieces of the artifact.
Telepathy ABILITY
Several Zeldas can communicate with Link over great distances. A Link to the Past famously begins with Zelda reaching Link telepathically from beneath Hyrule Castle.
Light Magic ABILITY
Light-based magic is one of Zelda’s most consistent offensive abilities. She uses Light Arrows during major confrontations with Ganondorf, and her appearances in crossover games often expand this into a broader arsenal of magical attacks.
Time POWER
The Tears of the Kingdom Zelda possesses a connection to time through Queen Sonia’s bloodline. Her Secret Stone amplifies that power during the era of Hyrule’s founding.
Sheikah Skills POWER
As Sheik, the Ocarina of Time Zelda demonstrates considerable physical skill. She moves with exceptional speed and agility, repeatedly appearing and disappearing before Link can stop her. Her combat abilities become much more explicit in games such as Super Smash Bros.
Phantom Possession ABILITY
The Zelda of Spirit Tracks can possess Phantom armor while existing as a spirit. This gives her the strength and defensive abilities needed to help Link directly inside the Tower of Spirits.
Echoes ABILITY
The Zelda of Echoes of Wisdom uses Tri and the Tri Rod to reproduce objects and monsters as echoes. It is probably the strangest arsenal any Zelda has possessed, but also one of the broadest.
Weapons and Equipment
Bow of Light and Light Arrows Item
The Bow of Light is strongly associated with Zelda in later games. In Twilight Princess, she fires Light Arrows while Link pursues Ganondorf on horseback. The weapon also appears prominently in several of Zelda’s crossover appearances.
Ocarina of Time Item
Young Zelda possesses the Ocarina of Time before entrusting it to Link. Nintendo describes the instrument as an important key to the Sacred Realm and specifically notes that Zelda gives it to Link to prevent Ganondorf from obtaining it.
Goddess’s Harp Item
The Zelda of Skyward Sword carries the Goddess’s Harp, an instrument tied to her role in Hylia’s plan.
Spirit Flute Item
Princess Zelda owns the Spirit Flute in Spirit Tracks. It becomes one of the key tools Link uses while restoring the Spirit Tracks.
Tri Rod Item
Tri gives Zelda the Tri Rod in Echoes of Wisdom. Rather than functioning as a conventional weapon, it allows her to learn and reproduce echoes of objects and creatures throughout Hyrule.
Transformations and Alternate Identities
Sheik Character
The Ocarina of Time Zelda hides from Ganondorf as Sheik for seven years. This is a disguise, not a separate incarnation.
Tetra Character
Tetra is the true identity Zelda grows up with in The Wind Waker. She doesn’t begin the story pretending not to be Zelda. She genuinely doesn’t know her royal ancestry.
Spirit Zelda / Ghost Zelda Character
After losing her body in Spirit Tracks, Zelda travels as a ghostlike spirit visible to Link and certain other characters. She can also inhabit Phantom armor.
Light Dragon Character
The Tears of the Kingdom Zelda undergoes draconification after swallowing her Secret Stone. Unlike Sheik or Tetra, this is an actual physical transformation and one she initially believes will be permanent.
Relationships
Link Character
There is no single relationship between Link and Zelda.
They aren’t the same two people meeting again throughout history.
Sometimes they barely know each other when the adventure begins. Sometimes Zelda is Link’s childhood friend. Sometimes he serves as her appointed knight.
Skyward Sword makes their friendship particularly personal. Nintendo’s developers said they intentionally wanted Zelda to care deeply for Link from the beginning.
Breath of the Wild takes the opposite route. Zelda initially resents what Link represents before their relationship gradually grows into trust and affection.
Whatever form it takes, Link and Zelda repeatedly find themselves fighting for the same Hyrule.
Ganondorf and Ganon Character
Ganondorf is Zelda’s most persistent enemy.
The conflict frequently revolves around the Triforce, with Zelda carrying Wisdom and Ganondorf carrying Power.
Their confrontations can be surprisingly direct. Zelda helps seal him in Ocarina of Time, fires Light Arrows at him in Twilight Princess, and fights his armies personally during the ancient Imprisoning War connected to Tears of the Kingdom.
Impa Character
Impa is one of Zelda’s most consistent allies across generations.
Depending on the era, she serves as Zelda’s nursemaid, bodyguard, adviser, Sheikah guardian or confidante.
The details change, but the connection between Zelda and Impa is almost as old as the series itself.
Hyrule’s Royal Family Character
Most Zeldas inherit both responsibilities and supernatural power from Hyrule’s royal bloodline.
Their fathers frequently appear as kings of Hyrule, though Zelda herself sometimes carries significant governing authority.
Nintendo’s current description says Zelda may rule the kingdom herself when the king is absent.
Rauru and Sonia Character
The Wild-era Zelda meets Hyrule’s founding king and queen after being transported into the distant past.
Sonia quickly recognizes a familial connection between herself and Zelda, while Rauru helps Zelda understand the era into which she has arrived.
Their relationship gives the modern princess a rare opportunity to meet people tied directly to the origin of the kingdom she was raised to protect.
Timeline Placement
Zelda appears throughout almost every major era of Nintendo’s official chronology.
Skyward Sword comes first and establishes Zelda’s connection to Hylia.
Later princesses appear before and during the era of the Hero of Time. Once Ocarina of Time creates multiple historical branches, different Zeldas appear in each.
The Twilight Princess Zelda exists on the Child Era branch.
Tetra appears on the Adult Era branch, followed generations later by the new Princess Zelda of Spirit Tracks in the newly established Hyrule.
Other princesses appear along the historical path leading through A Link to the Past, A Link Between Worlds, Echoes of Wisdom, the original The Legend of Zelda and Zelda II. Nintendo’s published chronology lays out those branching eras separately.
Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom occur in a much later version of Hyrule. Nintendo’s current chronology presents them after the traditional branches rather than assigning them a simple position within one of the older post-Ocarina paths.
Voice Actors
For most of Zelda’s history, Princess Zelda did not have fully spoken dialogue. Her early performances consisted largely of laughs, gasps, cries, battle sounds and other short vocalizations. That changed dramatically with Breath of the Wild, which introduced fully voiced cinematic dialogue in multiple languages.
Several actresses have now left their mark on different incarnations of the character.
Jun Mizusawa VOICE ACTOR
Zelda roles: Ocarina of Time, Majora’s Mask, Twilight Princess, Super Smash Bros. Melee, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U
Jun Mizusawa provided the voice of Princess Zelda in Ocarina of Time, making her one of the earliest performers to become closely associated with the character in Nintendo’s 3D games. She also voiced Zelda’s Sheik identity, along with several other Ocarina of Time characters, including Saria, Princess Ruto and Malon.
Mizusawa returned as Zelda in Twilight Princess, where her performance is noticeably more restrained and solemn to match that game’s older, more reserved princess. She also carried both Zelda and Sheik into several generations of Super Smash Bros., helping establish the voices many players associated with those characters for more than a decade.
The original Ocarina of Time did not feature spoken dialogue, so Mizusawa’s work there consisted primarily of expressive vocal sounds rather than voiced lines.
Hikari Tachibana VOICE ACTOR
Zelda roles: The Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass and appearances as Tetra in related games
Hikari Tachibana voices Tetra and Princess Zelda in The Wind Waker. Because the two identities belong to the same character, Tachibana’s performance accompanies Tetra both before and after the revelation of her royal ancestry.
She returned as Tetra in Phantom Hourglass, which continues the story of the same Link and Tetra after The Wind Waker. Her Zelda work is only one part of a longer career in Japanese voice acting that includes games, anime and tokusatsu productions. Tachibana is represented by Arts Vision and is originally from Osaka.
Her energetic performance is a particularly good fit for Tetra, whose personality is considerably louder and more openly expressive than most versions of Princess Zelda.
Akane Omae VOICE ACTOR
Akane Omae voices the Princess Zelda of Spirit Tracks, one of the most talkative and expressive incarnations of the character even though the game itself still relies on text for dialogue.
That Zelda spends much of the adventure traveling alongside Link as a spirit, which gives her far more opportunities for reactions and character animation than many earlier princesses. Omae’s vocal performance accompanies Zelda’s surprise, frustration, fear and excitement throughout the journey.
Born in Saitama, Japan, Omae also worked in anime and games including Gravion, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and The Sword of Etheria. She retired from voice acting around the beginning of the 2010s.
Yū Shimamura VOICE ACTOR
Zelda roles: Skyward Sword, Breath of the Wild (Japanese), Tears of the Kingdom (Japanese), Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (Japanese), Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment (Japanese)
Yū Shimamura first voiced Zelda in Skyward Sword. Like the games before it, Skyward Sword did not give its characters fully spoken conversations, but Shimamura provided Zelda’s vocal reactions throughout the story.
She later became the Japanese voice of the Wild-era Zelda when Breath of the Wild introduced fully voiced cinematic scenes. Shimamura returned for Tears of the Kingdom and the related Hyrule Warriors games, making her one of the longest-running performers associated with Princess Zelda.
Outside Zelda, Shimamura has an extensive career in anime and games. Her major roles include Annie Leonhart in Attack on Titan, Akiko Yosano in Bungo Stray Dogs and Haruka Haruno/Cure Flora in Go! Princess PreCure. She is represented by Ken Production in Japan.
Ayumi Fujimura VOICE ACTOR
Zelda role: A Link Between Worlds
Ayumi Fujimura provides Princess Zelda’s voice in A Link Between Worlds. Zelda does not have fully spoken dialogue in the game, so Fujimura’s performance consists of the character sounds and reactions used during cutscenes and gameplay.
Fujimura is a Japanese voice actress whose credits extend across anime and video games. She is particularly known for roles including Misaki Ayuzawa in Maid Sama!, Neferpitou in Hunter × Hunter and Ibuki in the Street Fighter series. She also voiced Fi in Skyward Sword, giving her the unusual distinction of performing two major Zelda-series characters.
Fujimura stepped away from voice acting on an indefinite hiatus in 2019.
Patricia Summersett VOICE ACTOR
Zelda roles: Breath of the Wild (English), Tears of the Kingdom (English), Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity (English), Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment (English)
Patricia Summersett became the English voice of Princess Zelda with Breath of the Wild in 2017, when Nintendo introduced extensive fully voiced scenes to the main series.
Her version of Zelda was a major departure from the shorter vocal performances used in earlier games. Summersett had to carry long cinematic scenes dealing with Zelda’s frustration over her dormant sealing power, her strained relationship with her father, her growing bond with Link and the destruction of Hyrule.
She returned for Tears of the Kingdom, as well as Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity and Age of Imprisonment. Her performance in Tears of the Kingdom earned a nomination for Best Supporting Performer at the 2023 Golden Joystick Awards.
Summersett is an American-Canadian actor, voice artist, writer and singer whose work spans games, television and film. Outside Zelda, she has performed characters in the Assassin’s Creed series and Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, and has appeared on screen in productions including Star Trek: Discovery and Three Pines.
Chiyuki Miura VOICE ACTOR
Zelda role: Echoes of Wisdom
Chiyuki Miura voices Princess Zelda in Echoes of Wisdom, the first mainline Zelda game built around the princess as the primary playable hero.
The game still uses text rather than fully voiced conversations, but Miura supplies Zelda’s character sounds and vocal reactions throughout the adventure. She is credited as Princess Zelda in the game’s cast.
Miura is a Japanese voice actress from Miyagi Prefecture represented by Ken Production. Her other roles include Nonomi Izayoi in Blue Archive, Towa Hiura in Ippon Again! and Allister in Pokémon. Her agency also lists gaming, watching game streams, singing and drawing among her interests and skills.
Appearances Outside the Main Series

Super Smash Bros.
Princess Zelda became a playable fighter in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
For several entries she could transform into Sheik during battle. Later Smash games separated Zelda and Sheik into distinct playable fighters, allowing each moveset to develop independently.
Zelda’s Smash attacks draw heavily from the magic associated with her main-series appearances.

Hyrule Warriors
Zelda is playable throughout the Hyrule Warriors series.
The original Hyrule Warriors turns her into a battlefield commander capable of using weapons such as the rapier and Dominion Rod.
Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity uses the Breath of the Wild incarnation and significantly expands her combat abilities. Its DLC even gives Zelda the Master Cycle as a weapon.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment
The Wild-era Zelda is once again playable in Age of Imprisonment, this time during the ancient war glimpsed in Tears of the Kingdom.
Nintendo describes the game as the complete story of Ganondorf’s invasion during the Imprisoning War, with Zelda, Rauru and other ancient heroes fighting directly on the battlefield.

Cadence of Hyrule
Zelda is also fully playable in Cadence of Hyrule.
Players can choose either Link or Princess Zelda and fight through a rhythm-based version of Hyrule.

Live-Action The Legend of Zelda
Princess Zelda is heading to theaters as well.
Nintendo has confirmed that Bo Bragason will portray Zelda in the live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, opposite Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.
The film is directed by Wes Ball and is scheduled to open worldwide on April 30, 2027.
Amiibo and Merchandise
Princess Zelda has received several amiibo figures based on different incarnations.
Notable releases include:
- Zelda – Super Smash Bros.
- Zelda – The Wind Waker
- Zelda – Breath of the Wild
- Zelda – Tears of the Kingdom
- Young Zelda – Ocarina of Time
The Tears of the Kingdom Zelda amiibo was released on November 3, 2023 and can provide materials, weapons and a special paraglider fabric in compatible games.
Nintendo is also introducing a Young Zelda amiibo based on the 2026 Ocarina of Time remake. The figure shows the young princess holding the Ocarina of Time and is scheduled for release in 2027. Scanning it in the remake unlocks a mask inspired by the graphical style of the original Nintendo 64 game.
Zelda naturally appears throughout the wider merchandise lineup as well, including figures, statues, clothing, collectibles and anniversary products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zelda the main character of The Legend of Zelda?
Usually, no. Link is the playable protagonist in most games, while Zelda is the series’ central heroine and namesake. That changed with Echoes of Wisdom, which made Princess Zelda the protagonist of a mainline Zelda adventure for the first time. Nintendo said the decision came after years of players asking to play as her.
Are all Princess Zeldas the same person?
No. Nintendo explicitly states that the different Zeldas are often separate individuals with different lives and memories. Some games do feature the same Zelda in direct sequels. Tetra appears in both The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass, while the Zelda from Breath of the Wild returns in Tears of the Kingdom.
Why are they all named Zelda?
The name is a tradition within Hyrule’s Royal Family. Zelda II gives the tradition an in-universe origin involving an ancient princess placed under a sleeping curse, after which royal daughters are given the name Zelda.
Is Sheik actually Zelda?
Yes. Sheik is the Ocarina of Time Princess Zelda in disguise. Nintendo explicitly identifies Sheik as Zelda hiding from Ganondorf.
Is Tetra Zelda?
Yes. Tetra is the Princess Zelda of The Wind Waker. She grows up without knowing her royal ancestry.
Is Zelda the reincarnation of Hylia?
The Zelda of Skyward Sword is specifically revealed to be Hylia reincarnated as a mortal. Later Zeldas inherit sacred power through the royal bloodline, but describing every Zelda simply as Hylia reincarnated goes further than the games clearly establish.
Does Zelda always have the Triforce of Wisdom?
Zelda is traditionally associated with the Triforce of Wisdom, but the Triforce does not play the same role in every game. Some incarnations possess it directly, while other stories barely involve the Triforce at all.
Is Zelda a Sage?
Sometimes. The Ocarina of Time Zelda is the seventh Sage and leader of the Sages. Other Zeldas have different roles, and being Princess Zelda does not automatically make every incarnation a Sage.
Can Zelda fight?
Very much so. She fights Ganondorf with Light Arrows in Twilight Princess, possesses Phantoms in Spirit Tracks, has extensive combat movesets in Super Smash Bros. and Hyrule Warriors, fights during the Imprisoning War in Age of Imprisonment, and becomes the playable hero of Echoes of Wisdom.
What is Zelda’s strongest form?
There isn’t an official ranking. The Light Dragon is by far her largest physical form, while other incarnations possess extremely powerful sealing magic, the Triforce of Wisdom or abilities connected to Hylia.
Who plays Princess Zelda in the live-action movie?
Bo Bragason will play Zelda in Nintendo’s live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, scheduled for April 30, 2027.
