Soft soil patches are bare, loose mounds of earth, and Navi points them out with “Oh, look! The soil here is soft!” There are ten of them on the way through the game. Release a Bug from a bottle onto one and a Gold Skulltula token pops out, or plant a Magic Bean in one and a sprout grows. The tokens in the soil come out at any hour, so you do not need to wait for night. Only the bean ride at Desert Colossus is a night trip. Every bean comes from the Bean Seller on Zora River, and the price climbs by 10 rupees per bean until it reaches 100.

Buying Magic Beans
Bean Seller
Walk up Zora River past the waterfall to the lattice gate and talk to the Bean Seller, who sits beside a patch of bare soil. His first bean costs 10 rupees, the second 20 and the third 30. Each later bean costs 10 more: 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and finally 100 rupees. Near the end he says he is almost out of beans, and after the 100 rupee bean he tells you that was the last of his magic beans and sends you off to find some nice, soft soil. Ten beans cost 550 rupees in all, and you can buy them over several visits. Zora River and Zora Domain covers the first purchases, and the last child errands cover the rest.

Magic Beans
The item text says to bury the bean in fresh soil and something will happen. Open the Items screen, pick Magic Beans and use one while you stand on a soft soil patch. A green sprout rises at once, and the number beside the bean shows how many you still carry. The seller says the plants can take years to reach full size. The one plant you ride in this game is the Colossus bean, which has grown by the time you return there as an adult at night. After you plant the beans on the child errand route you have two left, and those go into the Death Mountain Crater and Desert Colossus patches.

Bug in a Bottle
Every Gold Skulltula in the soil needs a bug, and a bug is used up each time. Catch one with an empty bottle: the message reads “You collected a bug in a bottle!” and tells you to take the lid off to release it. Bugs crawl on a loose patch of soil on the Lake Hylia shore path, in the long Graveyard grass, near the gate by the Bean Seller and in the leafy patch under the trees in the Lost Woods glade. A Business Scrub in the Lost Woods also sells one for 30 rupees. Keep a bottle free whenever you head to a patch.

The ten soft soil spots
Zora River: beside the Bean Seller
The first patch lies right next to the Bean Seller. Plant your first bean here and a sprout appears at once. Release a bug from your bottle on the same patch and a Gold Skulltula token pops out and the box shows 28 tokens. This is Gold Skulltula #28.

Lost Woods: near the first Business Scrub
Follow the dark section of the Lost Woods until a Use prompt appears at a loose patch. Equip the bug and use it on the soil. A Gold Skulltula crawls out. Defeat it and take Gold Skulltula #17.

Lost Woods: by the second Business Scrub
Go on to the soft soil near the second Business Scrub, the one who sells the bug. Release a bug from your bottle and defeat the Gold Skulltula that crawls out to collect Gold Skulltula #18.

Lost Woods: path toward Kokiri Forest
On the stone path with rock steps that leads back toward Kokiri Forest, Navi calls out about the soft soil. Use a bug, defeat the Gold Skulltula and claim Gold Skulltula #19.

Death Mountain Trail: past the Tektites
Walk along the path toward Dodongo Cavern, past the Tektites on the ledge, to a dim stretch of trail where a patch of soft soil sits near a sign. Use the bug here for Gold Skulltula #20. A second patch on the red canyon path, before the rope bridge, takes a bean.

Graveyard: path back to Kakariko Village
Catch a bug in the Graveyard grass, then walk toward the exit on the path back to Kakariko Village. Near the wall Navi says the soil is soft. Take the bug out of the bottle over it and the Gold Skulltula drops Gold Skulltula #11.

Lake Hylia: beside the barrels
Catch a bug on the shore path beyond the scarecrow field, then walk to the village houses. Stand on the patch in front of the barrels and sacks stacked against the lake side house and open the bottle. Gold Skulltula #14 drops. A second patch lies along the shore near the lit building by the pier, and it takes a bean.

Gerudo Valley: the pool below the waterfall
Jump into the pool below the waterfall and hold the Dive button to swim down into a dark cavity. A rocky shelf under the water holds a patch of loose soil, and your hearts drain while you are down there, so work quickly. Release the bug on it to receive Gold Skulltula #15. The grassy ledge where a cow grazes is a separate spot, reached by carrying a Cucco and gliding down, and a bean can be planted there.

Death Mountain Crater: lava rim
As a child, walk along the lava rim of Death Mountain Crater to the soft soil and use the bug. Gold Skulltula #54 pops out and the message counts 54 tokens. Plant a bean there afterward and the soil holds a sprout.

Desert Colossus: stone corner
Return as a child and walk the stone path beside the temple wall to the patch in the corner. Release the bug and cast Din’s Fire over the soil to take Gold Skulltula #88, then plant a bean in the empty hole. When you come back as an adult at night, the sprout is a bean plant: step on its leaf to ride across the sand to the 90th token and on to Heart Piece #32.
