The Poe Collector

Poe Collector

Poe Collector

A hooded figure with red eyes lives in a purple-lit house in Hyrule Castle Town. As a child you can only listen: he welcomes you, says Poes are the shadowy specters you find haunting graveyards and plains, and adds that big Poes are the rare ones. To catch them you will need a horse first. He shows you his lantern and says that a lantern like it near a rotted fence or a fallen tree means a big Poe has made that place its home, but they will not show themselves to you as you are. Choose “Never mind” and leave. You can read this scene in Temple of Time and meet Epona in Ingo Ranch and Epona.

When you return with Epona, the sell menu offers “I want to sell”, “What’s a poe?”, “Points?” and “Never mind”. Choose “Points?” at any time to hear your total.

Hunting Big Poes

Big Poe

Big Poe

Equip the Fairy Bow and ride Epona across Hyrule Field when the light is low, from dusk through the night. Purple flames burn on the ground in the open grass at certain spots, often beside the paved path. Ride up to one, dismount, and a Big Poe rises from the flames with a cry of “Woe is me…”. Watch for the Shoot Arrow prompt and fire as soon as it appears, because the Poe does not wait for you.

Once the arrow lands, hop off, open the item menu, pick an Empty Bottle and use it on the Poe. The message “You collected a big poe in a bottle!” appears and Link says the Poe Collector will probably buy it. Keep riding until every bottle you have holds a Poe, then sell the batch.

Selling Big Poes

Take the bottled Poes to the Poe Collector and choose “I want to sell”. For each one he says “Ah! What a beautiful big poe!”, pays 30 rupees and adds 100 points. After four Big Poes he tells you that you are at 400 points and that at 500 points he will give you something useful for catching Poes. Your bottles are empty when he mutters that you are fresh out of poes, so head back out to the field.

Empty Bottle

Empty Bottle at 500 points

The fifth Big Poe takes you to 500 points. He tells you that you have done it, then hands you an Empty Bottle with “May this gift bring you joy, my friend.” He adds that at 1,000 points he will reward you with something golden. This is the fifth bottle in the game, and the Bottle Locations page lists the other four.

Gold Rupee

Gold Rupee at 1,000 points

Keep hunting until you have sold ten in total. When the tenth sale arrives he cheers, says the golden reward is yours and congratulates you on becoming quite the ghost slayer. Accept the “Deal!” and you receive a Gold Rupee: “Glorious and gold! This one’s worth a whopping 200 rupees.” The walkthrough of this stretch, including the Hall of Fallen Foes, is in Poes, the Hall of Fallen Foes and Lake Hylia.

Take all the bottles you own on each trip, because every Poe you shoot needs a free one and the trip back to town is long.
