CoversHyrule Field at night, Ingo Ranch, the scarecrow field by Lake Hylia
LinkAdult
You needOcarina of Time with the Sun’s Song and Epona’s Song, at least 20 rupees
RewardsEpona Epona (your horse), Scarecrow Song; no Heart Pieces, Heart Containers or Gold Skulltula tokens

You cross Hyrule Field at night to Ingo Ranch, flip the sky to day with the Sun’s Song, listen to Malon’s worries and pay Ingo 20 rupees for a ride. Epona’s Song brings Epona to you, you beat Ingo in two races, and the second one wins you the horse. You then jump the locked ranch wall on Epona and ride to the scarecrow field to teach Bonooru the Scarecrow Song.

Hyrule Field to Ingo Ranch

Cross Hyrule Field at night

Leave Hyrule Castle Town through the broken gate and step out onto Hyrule Field. The Hyrule Field banner appears and the world is dark, with the map in the corner showing the whole region. Follow the path across the open ground, hold Dash to dive through any water, and fight off the skeletal creatures and purple monsters that rise from the grass, because there is nothing to collect on this stretch. Ahead you will see the lit gate of a ranch.

Enter Ingo Ranch

The Ingo Ranch banner appears as you pass under the gate and its colored pennants. Follow the yard past the lit doors and the wooden stairs of the ranch house if you like, then come back out and walk along the dark path between the buildings and the paddock fence until you reach the side of a brick stable.

Malon and the Sun’s Song

Play the Sun’s Song to bring the day

Beside the stable wall, open the songbook and play the Sun’s Song. The ocarina scene shows the notes and “You played the Sun’s Song!” appears. Night gives way to daylight. Link then hears a muttered line, “So many worries…”, coming from the brick stable door nearby.

Malon

Talk to Malon in the stable

Walk through the brick stable door and talk to Malon. She apologizes and explains that since Ganondorf arrived, Ingo has taken out loan after loan to expand the ranch and plans to sell the horses to pay Ganondorf. She tells you Epona, the fastest horse the ranch has, is about to be sold. She wishes someone would whisk Epona away, then says she is mostly kidding. Remember that hint.

Ingo, Epona and the horse race

Ingo

Pay Ingo 20 rupees to ride

Go out to the ranch gate and talk to Ingo. He introduces himself as the boss of the ranch now, since Talon “got the boot,” and brags that his donations to Lord Ganondorf will make him master of the whole area. When he asks, “Do you wanna pay 20 rupees to ride a horse?”, say yes. You can also accept his riding explanation, which covers urging a horse to speed up and warns that horses will not jump things diagonally.

Epona

Call Epona with Epona’s Song

Walk out into the paddock, open the songbook and play Epona’s Song. “You played Epona’s Song!” appears and Epona trots across the grass to you. Press the button shown to mount. You are riding the horse Ingo wants to sell, not one of his rentals, and the prompts at the bottom show Whoa!, Go! and Dismount.

Learn to ride

Ride around the paddock to get a feel for Epona. Hold the Go! button to build speed, and watch the row of carrots at the bottom of the screen, which drains as you spur her on. Aim straight at a low fence and she leaps it. Approaching fences at an angle makes her refuse, as Ingo warned. Ride up beside Ingo when you are ready.

First race with Ingo

Ingo is surprised that the wild horse lets you ride and proposes a race. You ride one lap around the track and whoever loses pays the winner 20 rupees. Accept and line up beside him at the gate. When the READY… call ends, hold Go! and keep Epona on the dirt track. “FINISHED!” appears when you cross the line first, and Ingo hops about yelping in pain, wondering why you are not the one getting thrown.

Second race wins Epona

Ingo refuses to give up and offers a rematch: lose again and you still pay in rupees, but if you win, he says, “That horse is yours!” and points at Epona. Accept and line up. After the “READY…” call, run the same lap and finish first. “FINISHED!” appears again. Ingo falls apart, wailing that the horse only listens to Malon and that he needed the money to pay off his debts, and Epona is yours.

Escape the ranch

Ingo keeps his word but locks the gate, telling you that you can never leave the ranch. Do not argue. Ride Epona at the closed gate to clear it, then follow the fence around the track toward the high palisade at the edge of the paddock. A short scene shows Malon watching Ingo while you leave, and you come out in open grass outside the ranch with the horse that is now yours.

Bonooru and the Scarecrow Song

Ride to the scarecrow field

Epona runs across Hyrule Field as fast as you spur her. Ride over the hills and through a grove of trees toward the scarecrow field on the Lake Hylia side, checking the map in the corner as you go. Dismount at the fenced patch of dark earth where the scarecrow stands.

Bonooru

Scarecrow Song

Talk to Bonooru the scarecrow. He remembers you from when you were a kid and says he is the brilliant scarecrow who never forgets a song once he hears it. He asks you to play that song for him. Open the note pad and play the tune you taught him as a child. “This is the song you taught Bonooru the scarecrow, an original, one-of-a-kind melody” appears.

Bonooru cheers that this is the one and thanks you, then calls out that he wants to join you. This is the Scarecrow Song. You have no use for it yet, but it pairs with the Hookshot later.
